Avatar m tn There are several metabolic disorders that can present with carnitine deficiency including mitochondrial disorders, disorders of amino acid metabolism, disorders in the urea cycle, and other errors of inborn metabolism. Problems in the liver can also affect carnitine metabolism Dietary deficiencies in carntine can also lead to carnitine deficiency. Certain vegetarian diets can lead to deficiency, but well-balanced vegetarian diets may not necessarily.
Avatar f tn Hi there. Mitochondrial myopathies are a group of neuromuscular diseases caused by damage to the mitochondria, the power plants of our cells. Since nerve cells and muscles require the most energy thus are most damaged. Few symptoms are exercise tolerance, heart failure or rhythm disturbances, dementia, movement disorders, deafness, blindness, droopy eyelids, vomiting, seizures etc. during physical activity muscles may become easily fatigued or weak.
Avatar f tn //www.aldf.com/lyme-disease/#chronicLymeDisease which would suggest that the ketogenic diet is a way to treat lyme. Granted, there is a lot out there from non medical sources. So you might want to kind of check out that. In terms of her behavior, the lyme might be causing many of the problems. But, did she have any of these problems before the lyme disease? She does exhibit symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder (which could have been started by the Lyme).

Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.

Avatar m tn Atkins has more research on it than any other diet because it was developed originally to prevent heart disease (the creator, Dr. Atkins, died of heart disease!) The research showed that the diet did not work in the long run and was unhealthy in the long run, as it's too high in protein and too low in antioxidant rich foods. That's not to say it doesn't have its champions, but it hasn't panned out as hoped over time.
