Avatar m tn The choice of med depends on the type of seizure disorder, and some people require two meds (polytherapy) to achieve good seizure control. Meds are really the only way to reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures, though some people have seizure triggers (flashing light, for instance) and so avoiding triggers is important for them.

Avatar f tn She is on a ketogenic diet to help with the Lyme, so she gets low carbs, no sugar or processed foods, no dyed foods, no grains. I have called her pediatrician and scheduled an appointment to evaluate her, but thought I would ask here as well, because it'll be two weeks before they can see her. Thoughts, insights? Anything specific ringing a belly that I should look deeper into? Is there a connection to children's emotions and lyme, or is this two separate issues?
Avatar f tn We ended up with the last resort being the ketogenic diet. After the diet she was put on Depakote for maintenance....its proven to be the most effective drug for her. Her known triggers for her myoclonics that cluster are fore most illness, followed closely by stressed and also flashing lights. Anyways...my daughter is 18, but functions near a 2-3 year old level. She is semi verbal, a lot of swearing, always seems mad/mean.
Tbd key words will be low-carb, and keto. If you do look into ketogenic diet, do not use it as an excuse to eat too much fat; if you want to lose weight fat has to be limited to fats that come naturally with the foods that you eat, rather than lots of extra fats being added. There are now many cases where this has happened (you can look up Virta Health a company that tries to guide patients to do this), and there are also many online supportive communities.

2094297 tn?1345389093 My best advice to you would be to get on a very low carb diet (ketogenic), as this will help you control your blood sugars. basically no sugars in your diet and carbs come from non-starchy veges, nuts, a little dairy. Look up Richard Bernstein "Diabetes Solutions". Basal Bolus approach (separate fast and long acting insulin) is going to give you better control that the 70/30. Do you have a carb-insulin ratio.

Or will she pick it up once I can offer her a variety of drinks?
Avatar m tn Think you should talk to someone familiar with the Ketogenic diet and see if there could be a relationship. I understand there are a number of hospitals which except this now as a treatment for epilespy. Maybe you could google it on line and find one close to you so you could talk to the people more about this procedure. From what I read it is important to address the problem earily in order to prevent brain damage.
Avatar n tn in the early days with her each new drug we tried only brought out a different type of seizure. Eventually I found the ketogenic diet ( was not offered to me as a choice ) i insisted they let me have that chance. That was our answer at the time...it broke the mess with the many different types of seizures she was having. She was put on Depakote only for maintenance with the diet ( after being weaned from 5 different drugs) depakote held her steady for many years.
Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.
Avatar f tn I had surgery on the right temporal lobe for epilepsy in 1993! At the time I was 24. before surgery I had complex partial seizures, never totally controlled by medication. I was in numerous drug studies at Vanderbilt, and post surgery and only taking 50 mg of Topamax, one the drug of which I was in a study for! I have a breakthrough aura now and then, but as long as I take my medicine, no seizures.
Avatar n tn Hi, Your blood sugars are still very high. Maximum daily dose of metformin is 2650 mg, I understand. So you are well below this still. Suggest you take efforts to further reduce your blood sugars. normal fasting should be in the range of about 4.4 - 5.2. 2 hours post eating should be less than 7.7 and ideally less than 6.6 (or close to fasting levels). Low carb diet may help greatly with reducing post eating blood sugars (look into low carb / ketogenic / paleo-style).
