We followed up with her family doctor who referred her to a pediatric neurologist. She saw the neurologist who set her up for the EEG. A week and a half later, she fainted again in the shower and then later on in the day she fainted in the hallway at school. She went to the family doc who did an EKG and sent her for a glucose test. The EEG was already scheduled. A consult with the pediatric cardiologist was set up. Ok so,,, now the neurologist wants her to start on Keppra immediately.
My daughter was diagnosed with CP, sensory intetgration, ADHD, and had suffer from seizures, but has been seizure free for about 3 years (so we think, nothing witnessed). She was first on trileptal, then added keppra, then d/c'd the trileptal. About 1 1/2 years ago they d/c'd her keppra, due to being seizure free for a couple of years and her dose was so low that on her last labs it did not even register. She got very ill in February of this year with the flu, then strep throat....
Relative to your grandson's weight, Keppra (an anti-seizure medication) generally does not result in weight gain, but <1% of adult patients in clinical trials with Keppra did experience some weight gain. The weight gain is more likely the result of Risperdal, an anti-psychotic medication that often produces dramatic weight gain. That medication was likely prescribed to address the volatile behavior, not to address the seizure disorder.
So after staying overnight and at the vet the next day he came home and has been on Keppra and phenobarbital. 500mg 2x a day Keppra and 60mg 2x a day pheno. He has the side effects which are lessening but hasn't been as bad as I read could be. He is very responsive and is pretty much himself besides the side effects(weak legs, tired). It's been 6 days and no seizures so far. Will be going to vet in a week for check up and blood test again. I am so on edge..
My husband was diagnosed with a condition called neurogenic cough. It has been described as a chronic cough where the nerve that provides sensation to the voicebox and is responsible for triggering the cough reflex has been injured, usually by a virus. When this happens, the nerve's level of sensitivity before it triggers the cough reflex becomes markedly reduced; in other words, it becomes hyper-sensitive.
Completed EEG yesterday with pediatric neurologist at Sacred Heart confirming diagnosis. They had us bring her in sleep deprived. As predicted the small seizures are more frequent when she is tired and / or stressed. Medication: started daughter on KEPPRA twice a day. We will do follow-up EEG in 3 months to see if seizures are suppressed. Doctor feels she will likely out grow this in 2 years or so. Her small seizures last only for a matter of a second or two, but are frequent.
I also take Keppra but have never had any problems at all. I suffered with depression for 11 years and came of the medicine fully just before I went on Keppra, and yes I have days where I do feel depressed but with any illness you do have days where you feel depressed even suicidal. So my advice is don't necessarily put it down to Keppra. Talk to the doctor who prescribed Keppra to you and see if you can be referred to a Psychiatrist to talk it through and find out if it is the tablets!
I have no health insurance. I was finally got a really basic coverage, but it doesn't cover keppra. i've been taking keppra for a 2 months. I was switched to phenobarbitol for when I run out. since keppra is not on the charity's formulary.
I hope to God that I cant find some source of keppra before I run out. The phenobarb is scary.

As my DD is in Keppra, and has previously been on other seizure meds, the Keppra, by far has had the least amount of side-effects. You could ask if some of her mood changes, memory loss, etc. are from the stroke vs. the Keppra. Please do not wean her off the medication without a Dr's directive... that could cause withdrawal seizures.

Did you start it after or before keppra? How long were you on Keppra? I wish my daughter could take Lamictal but her rash got the doctor worried, even though it was ringworm. Have you heard of any other anti-seizure meds that might actually work well for moods? I know Lamictal is a very good mood stabilizer. Good luck.
I have asked her to draw pictures of what she sees and she is very consistent. The ophthalmologist says her eyes are fine. He suggested (if this continues) she see a pediatric ophthalmologist. I have made an appointment to see our pediatrician on Monday. I am going to take the drawings and the objects I had her draw. I would be HAPPY to e-mail you a scan of the pictures she drew, and a picture of the object she was looking at. This is really scaring me.

04/12 changed him to Dilatan and keppra more seizures. 05/12 put back on keppra only 3,500 mg. 06/12 seizures moved to keppra 4,000 mg a day! He has had only 1 seizures since been on 4,000, but this is a very high dosage. He is going to see an seizures specialist. Hoping he can get this dosage down.
Frequent high-amplitude monomorphic spike & wave complexes in the left occipital head region that are highly focal. Also somewhat frequent independently occuring right hemisphere spikes, max in the centro-temporal region. When she fell asleep, spikes in L & R hemisphere continue independently and sometimes rhythmically. L occipital spikes rhythmic 2-4 seconds. R hemisphere spikes 30-60 seconds. Interpretation: independent spike foci in L occipital region and R centro-temporal regoin.
ve responded very well to medications like Neurontin, Lyrica and Topamax. Keppra is another one that has been recommended to me. The key really is finding which side effects are the best to deal with. It's really an individual thing. I couldn't handle the weight gain, tiredness and bloating that I felt while on Lyrica, although it helped me immensely with pain. Lyrica is an anti-seizure medication too.
I read something on rxlist about moodswings and irritibility related to Keppra. It's believed that Keppra makes your brain "dump" Vitamin B6 at times which lowers dopamine or seratonin levels and makes you feel horrible.
Does your daughter take vitamins? I'd try some Vitamin B6 if her multivitamin doesn't contain it. I started taking Trader Joe's High Potency vitamins and feel much, much better since starting.

My friend has an autistic 16 years old boy who has epilepsy ,Generalized Tonic-Clonic , he was using Depakene chrono for a long time + lemictal, he was ok with it till september 2007, the blood tests showed that the Depakene chrono was increasing in his blood, so the doctor suggested to stop it and replace it by Keppra, then , he was having seizures one after the other .. so they added the depakene to his daily taken medications ,, he was ok for almost 4 weeks ..
Continued with Keppra and Di Tan Tang 2X/day each for another 8 days. Then took her Keppra down to 1/day for 2 weeks. Then she went one day with no Keppra and the next day she had a seizure. This seizure was longer, but her disorientation was shorter. Vet then said to go back to giving her Keppra for 30 days and we will re-evaluate. So for the next 30 days she was taking Keppra 1/day and Di Tan Tang 2/day.
He said she had a 70% chance of having another seizure in the next 3 years and suggested we put her on Keppra. (He previously ordered the MRI because he thought that her earlier seizures, which both lasted less than a minute and were about 18 months apart, may have caused hippocamal sclerosis). When we asked if she had epilepsy, he said no that she has "epileptic tendencies.

I am on the off brand of keppra and I was wondering if anyone uses adderal to help with the side effects of this medication. I find myself to be out of it most days and not have a drive to do anything.
Anyone else on Keppra to prevent myoclonic jerks (JME diagnosed)? I am, and have been on Keppra for almost 5 years. Started at age 23 and I am now 28. At the beginning they made me very sluggish, but after about 2 months I felt wonderful (since it was the first time in my life I wasn't having seizures!!
