Keppra mood stabilizer

Common Questions and Answers about Keppra mood stabilizer

keppra

Avatar m tn I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason. The mood stabilizer I take now Clonidine is rarely used because it can cause depression and its a blood pressure medication in its original use with the potential of some severe side effects. I don't believe the medication Lovaza requires blood tests but like the rest of the mood stabilizers that would be listed its use as a mood stabilizer is experimental.
Avatar f tn You would have to speak to your doc regarding any other AEDs that would work without effecting your daughters mood. so far havent recieved any benefit from lamictal as far as mood stabilizer goes but its only been 2 wks and I'm slowly increasing my dose. Lots of luck.
585414 tn?1288941302 Its important that when people run out of standard mood stabilizers that some of the remaining choices do have potential side effects of concern, especially personality alterations. That's why some of them aren't often used. I've been through every mood stabilizer. Could detail but it would go on for pages. But after the common ones proved intolerable Keppra caused suicidal ideations. Trileptal caused an agitated mixed state.
Avatar f tn Almost one third of the rest are of the opinion that Levetiracetam has worked as a mood stabilizer for them. Keep in mind, these are reports from patients who are not diagnosed with any mood disorder such as bipolar disorder. Your daughter will have to receive the minimum effective dose of 900mg, as per her weight (45 kg). Having said that, she may respond to 500mg. I guess she is not receiving any other medicine. She will have to take the medicine in divided doses initially.
Avatar f tn Now, with the angry moods, does anyone take an anti-depressant or mood stabilizer with Keppra to counteract that angry side that Keppra brings out? I was not this angry (although it hasn't pushed anyone out of my life or prevented me from succeeding at work), focused on the negatives, or lack confidence before Keppra. I just want to be confident and happy again, any suggestions?
Avatar f tn HI,I was put on Lamictal yesterday...Dr feels it might help with my deprssion as i cant seem to take antidepressants.I was in abilify but i started about 3 weeks into gettting extremely dizzy so she had me stop it last week,i saw her on Monday and she put me on 25 mg of Lam ictal as to build up to more....
Avatar f tn I believe this list should have everything: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm The other ones I tried were Trileptal (which is used fairly often, its a safer version of Tegretol basically), Neurotin (which is somewhat effective) and Keppra (which for me had too many side effects which is not uncommon). Topomax can be helpful for some people. Lovaza is used experimentally as a mood stabilizer but I've never tried it.
Avatar f tn will know that we need to put her on a mood stabilizer, but for now, we all agree that it is the Keppra doing this to her.
Avatar f tn all the things that you mention seem to be side effects of keppra. mood issues can definately attributed to it. alot of antiepileptics can also cause concentration issues which could be a cause of the inabilty to remember things.
1255505 tn?1272819115 is that lithium is the only medication that was first researched and developed as a primary mood stabilizer. Every other mood stabilizer was developed as another medication and used off label as a mood stabilizer and then only FDA approved for that purpose afterwards. They are finding that the anti-convulsant used for my physical disability is showing mood stabilization properties and they may potentially document that.
Avatar m tn side effects of Keppra seem to contradict what our goals for mom are....memory loss, mood changes, mental changes and vision changes among others. Is Keppra safe to use for this (it is not being used with any other seizure medication....just by itself)? We want to wean her off, but the doctor is wanting to keep her on it.
564491 tn?1320360393 I also suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and depression, secondarily. While taking Keppra, my mood was very erratic, irritable, depressed (very), and a lot of other unpleasant psychological side effects. I'm wondering how often this happens with Keppra. I have since stopped taking it. Thank you.
585414 tn?1288941302 I am starting a new medication and although its for my physical disability its experimental for that use but its a recently FDA approved anti-convulsant Lacosimide and the reason I am posting in this forum about it is like all anti-convulsants in a certain class it can cause depression and the like.
Avatar f tn I don't hear very many good reports about keppra with regard to it's side effects. I do hear many complaints about mood swings, aggression, cognition and memory problems, etc.. However, I have read a few comments saying it can actually HELP with mood swings and bipolar disorder (which she doesn't have). Please comment on this. My daughter has just begun this medication for seizure disorder. She has had seizures several years apart from each other.
1596950 tn?1297352500 aggresion is a side effect of keppra, doctors sometime call it the "keppra rage". i didn't have the aggression, but i had the learning problems. bad memory and lack of concentration was the worst of it. it was so bad because i'm at varsity and you're basically just a number so they don't really care.
2069525 tn?1331349398 Amy is right, you need a mood stabilizer, if you are going to take an antidepressant. That said if celexa works for you with out a mood stabilizer that is great. I completely get that the mood stabilizer can make you feel "dumb" and slows you down but maybe you could talk to your psychiatrist about a lower dose or something. Its important to work together with your doctor and you get what works for you. I didn't find Celexa helpful but i was on a low dose.
1134609 tn?1269272200 Klonopin is an anti-anxiety medication used as a mood stabilizer. Clinically in general the most effective mood stabilizer is lithium but each person reacts differently to each medication. Seroquel causing mania is rare. My experience with mood stabilizers was different from yours because I responded very well to Lamictal and Seroquel (which is an antipsychotic used as a mood stabilizer). What I take now is in Phase II FDA study so they are still researching it.
327385 tn?1378360731 how well has keppra worked controling your seizures and what side effects do you have? has the keppra helped your mood and stress level? has the keppra helped you lose weight and how long did it take you to get use to the med? thanks for all your help .
479255 tn?1208116148 I still have problems so I called him back..............he told me to see a shrink. I feel like the keppra is making me have mood swings that are totally crazy! I am usually very laid back and mellow and now get upset over the littlest things for no reason................has anyone else had this experience on Keppra?
Avatar m tn That's another thing I'm worried about is them adding a mood stabilizer because I already gained weight from Abilify and I don't feel like dealing with more side effects. Hopefully my previous psychiatric records help them realize they don't need to do anything except maybe tweak the doses of the meds I take already.
574118 tn?1305135284 I agree this is not the forum for a response from a professional but within my knowledge as a consumer I'll give you what I know as the question is not very complex. A mood stabilizer treats bipolar disorder or other mood disorders. That doesn't mean the medication was first approved as a mood stabilizer. There is only one medication that was originally approved as a mood stabilizer first. That is Lithium.
1029865 tn?1252418538 I use 0.5mg Klonopin as a secondary mood stabilizer to help with anxiety. I also take Abilify 15mg as the main dose.
Avatar n tn Yes that can happen in people with bipolar with any anti-depressent. Wellbutrin is the least likely to cause this but its still a possibility. When I had a mood stabilizer that didn't work on the depressive aspect on bipolar, generally another mood stabilizer in addition instead of an anti-depressent was added for this very reason. You should speak to your psychiatriat about your concerns if you have bipolar and are being prescribed an anti-depressent as they are very valid.
Avatar f tn It has somewhat of a mood stabilization effect and given that I have schizoaffective and require a mood stabilizer I am somewhat helped by it but the main mood stabilizers I take are Catapres and Lovaza. Klonopin can be prescribed as an adjunct mood stabilizer but rarely has an effect as a full mood stabilizer as its main property is an an anti-anxiety medication.
Avatar f tn Yes and it worked well as a mood stabilizer/anti-psychotic but I had a severe problem with weight gain as did other people I know who have taken it and that's relatively common. However, it is an effective mood stabilizer though I know the most likely out of the anti-psychotics to cause this problem. It is definitely worth going back on medication though I might ask about something else.
299889 tn?1257339377 I have been on many different medications such as effexor, paxil, prestique and lastly pexeva. My doctor wants me to go on xanax plus a mood stabilizer pexeva which I have been on for 2 weeks. My anxiety is so bad I can't think straight and when I have tried to come off of a mood stabilizer before it has made me very ill. I know it is a big step, it is the only thing I haven't tried. I am 59 and need to get on my feet. Please give me opinions.
458072 tn?1291415186 My sister has been on keppra for quite some time now for seizures. She has some behaviors going on that we are not sure of what is causing them. I would appreciate it very much if you would share your experienes with keppra and what you think of it, so we can decide if it is the meds or something else causing this behavior. Thank you in advance.
