I am also a mom dealing with terrible mood swings. My daughter was on Keppra for 5 yrs and the mood swings were so bad that it cost her her marriage, lost two jobs...not herself. She was switched to Valproic Acid four mos. ago and she was again the cheerful and sweet young woman she had always been, but... valproic acid caused her hair to fall big time (like when you are in chemo) and she gained l5 lbs in 4 mos. Dr. switched her to Tegretol and the irritabilty is back.
Hi, my sister has been on dilantin for nearly 40 years, Last december she had a massive seizure after 30 years fit free. Now she is not herself, she has violent mood swings and constant talking. She has a mild intellectual disabilty, and for the past month been duck shoved between hospital, mental health ward and the general ward. the cat scan was fine, and she is going to have a ecg soon.She has been put on anti psychotic drugs, which helps a litlle (sometimes).
Most of them are suffering from partial seizures. And the first line drug is mostly Tegretol. Only a few patients have complained about mood swings so far. All had predominantly depressed mood, but not to the extent of being called depressive disorder. This must be about 10% of the patients. The rest have no issues with mood. Almost one third of the rest are of the opinion that Levetiracetam has worked as a mood stabilizer for them.
I do hear many complaints about mood swings, aggression, cognition and memory problems, etc.. However, I have read a few comments saying it can actually HELP with mood swings and bipolar disorder (which she doesn't have). Please comment on this. My daughter has just begun this medication for seizure disorder. She has had seizures several years apart from each other. We originally thought she just 'fainted' but now realize they've been seizures.
I have heard keppra is bad about causing mood swings. I am on tegretol. I had my first (febrile) seizure when I was 5 and that's what I was put on. In Sept and Nov I had alot of very nasty grand mals. I'm not going to say this to scare you, but you should be aware. I have lost a good deal of my memory (as far as past memories). I can be reminded easily of some and some I have no recollection. My short term memory has been affected too.
Just try to be patient with her and your doctors.
My daughter is now experiencing several side effects to keppra. She is extremely drowsy, very short tempered, depressed, and is reporting to me that her memory is 'foggy'. She's on a very low dose of keppra, only 250 mg at night and 125 mg in the morning. She's been on it a total of 3 weeks now. I've been with her and she seems to be very melancholy and also short fused over the many situations. She weighs 100 pounds and is 20 years old.
i got a magazine and it has a page about keppra .the advertisment says to call your doctor right away if mood & behavior changes-aggression-agitation-anger-anxiety-apathy-mood swings-depression-hostillity-irritabillty.a few people may get thoughts of suicide.i would talk to his doctor about his symptoms and ask if he needs to change meds.heres a site about keppra. www.Keppra.com hope this helps,really sounds like its this med.
Anyone else on Keppra to prevent myoclonic jerks (JME diagnosed)? I am, and have been on Keppra for almost 5 years. Started at age 23 and I am now 28. At the beginning they made me very sluggish, but after about 2 months I felt wonderful (since it was the first time in my life I wasn't having seizures!!
I am on keppra and lamotrigine (sp?) Lamotrigine seems to help with the anger issues keppra was causing.
side effects of Keppra seem to contradict what our goals for mom are....memory loss, mood changes, mental changes and vision changes among others.
Is Keppra safe to use for this (it is not being used with any other seizure medication....just by itself)?
We want to wean her off, but the doctor is wanting to keep her on it.
I am a 23 years old woman and I have been struggling with mood changes what seems forever. I've never felt "normal", whatever this means. I have never reacted to some sorts of situations the same way other people do. Since I can remember everything starts pretty much like this: I am full of energy, felling extremely well about myself and I usually get a load of things to be done that is above heavy.
You are most def not alone! I sat at my desk at work and cried ALL day yesterday. I'm only 5 weeks and I hope that it gets better b/c I'm going through a lot of tissue. I just joined this site yesterday and I have found the the women on here are so supportive and full of good advice which has helped me a lot in the past 24hrs. Whenever I feel like I'm about to cry or get upset, I just log on and reach out to someone who knows what I'm going through (another pregnant woman).
Haha omg. We talk about everything from the beginning about being pregnant. And all week he just, drives me up the wall! And I'm really sarcastic and mean, it just flows out.. then two seconds later I'm like "oh my god baby I'm really sorry I didn't mean it I love you" hahaha! He understands but I feel bad... hoorrmoonnesss.
I am six weeks and i am crying and sad over small stuff. Been trying to potty train my two yr old with not much luck. I think that might be part of it. Is this normal to have so early and what can i do to help work through it?? Also will this mean that i will have postpartum after the baby comes? I was fine last time during and after.
But my fiance has been very understanding and just brings up stuff about our baby and my mood goes from a ad and mad to excited and happy. So now I just think about my little baby boy and how I can't wait to hold him and hear his first words and everything whenever I'm getting moody. You could try that. I hope that helps a little.
