keppra

3242988 tn?1359306516 Hello, I'm newly diagnosed with partial epilepsy and I have several non convulsive seizures daily. I tried to take Keppra for 3 weeks but it made me VERY sick. Now I'm suppose to take Oxcarbrazepine,. My question is "what happens to my brain if I don't take meds"? I'm wondering if the non convulsive seizures will progress to gran mal ? I have TBI (traumatic brain injury) so my spelling & vocabulary are limited, so please excuse my errors.
Avatar f tn status epilepticus and sudden unexplained death are risks for this condition. Support groups in your school, locality and even here in the net may greatly help. Take care always.
Avatar f tn There is however a very large risk of a traumatic seizure event if you try to discontinue Keppra. There is no evidence that Keppra poses any long term health risk, humans have been using it for almost 2 decades. If your 4 legged best friend is on Phenobarbital and/or K.bromide you should discuss with your vet about the risk/benefits of weaning off those and/or transitioning to Keppra as those 2 drugs can cause liver/kidney damage in the long term.
Avatar f tn I have been keeping a log and I found out about every 30 days i get real sleeply for 3 days, so for those 3 days I take 250mg of Keppra. It stops more from coming that day...................Don't get on Dilantin try getting on Keppra.
Avatar m tn This is an uncommon diagnosis and involves status epilepticus that continues or recurs 24 h or more after the onset of anesthetic therapy. Status epilepticus is a single seizure that lasts for more than 5 minutes or two more seizures within 5 minutes. This article goes through ways that refractory epilepticus is treated. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4309114/. Your brother's physicians are working very hard to help him and we sincerely hope that they will be successful.
Avatar n tn As you may already know, any seizure lasting for more than 30 minutes is called status epilepticus. By definition, the seizure you enquire about is a status epilepticus. However without examining the patient, it’s very difficult to comment. Since there is a family history of hypoglycemia, this should also be ruled out in your friend’s case. Persistent low sugar levels in the blood can cause seizures. Also autoimmune disorders should be looked into like celiac disease etc.
Avatar f tn Then I did the Chiari decompression, the laminectomy and a Occipital Neurectomy on the left and right. For two years I was pretty pain free, then for two more I was starting to get a bad migraine one to two a year, still pretty great. Then 2008. I started getting daily headaches and one to two bad monthly migraines the first status migrainous was in November 3 weeks. Then starting March 11 I got this one and it has yet to let up.
1434787 tn?1283574819 It is commonly used for treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures including status epilepticus, muscle spasms, restless legs syndrome, alcohol withdrawal, benzodiazepine withdrawal and Ménière's disease. It may also be used before certain medical procedures (such as endoscopies) to reduce tension and anxiety, and in some surgical procedures to induce amnesia. My dad was on it a year ago.
5206664 tn?1365112476 It underlines that seizures may be the first observable symptom in MS and the frequency and seriousness of status epilepticus.
Avatar m tn Hey there and welcome to the forum! What is motivating you to taper off Klonopin? We can't discuss taper schedules on this forum but you MUST taper from this medication to prevent possible seizures. Your doctor should be able to give you more direction here. In my work as a RN I have seen doctor's prescribe Valium or Tegratol to taper off Klonopin to prevent 'status epilepticus' (nonstop seizure). This would depend on the dose and length of use.
Avatar f tn I dont want to scare you, but benzo are sometimes prescribed for seizures- Clonipin and Valium mostly- and ANY drug that prevents seizures should be weaned off of carefully for fear that status epilepticus can occur. I watched it happen with my sister. She forgot to take a dose of her meds for two days (I dont think she forgot, I think she was being stubborn) and went into status epilepticus- had 8 seizures, went to the ER and was in ICU for 5 days, now she has a $25,000.00 hospital bill.
Avatar m tn I have no health insurance. I was finally got a really basic coverage, but it doesn't cover keppra. i've been taking keppra for a 2 months. I was switched to phenobarbitol for when I run out. since keppra is not on the charity's formulary. I hope to God that I cant find some source of keppra before I run out. The phenobarb is scary. So I'm excited about the links here: http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/index.php http://www.needymeds.
Avatar m tn It sounds as if your cat may have a long prodromal phase, than the seizure, and then a very long postictal phase; and if this is the case, it may not be status epilepticus. A consult with a veterinary neurologist may be very valuable. Record one of the seizures to show to your vet.
Avatar f tn I am, and have been on Keppra for almost 5 years. Started at age 23 and I am now 28. At the beginning they made me very sluggish, but after about 2 months I felt wonderful (since it was the first time in my life I wasn't having seizures!!) I have noticed the following: quick to get angry, short tempered, excessive crying, like to focus on negative conversations rather than the positive, I complain a lot, and I take it out on the ones I love most.
769317 tn?1235020736 of 4 hours duration (status epilepticus). was urgently transferred by plane to a larger center, and after 9 days the same, they could not find nothing "wrong "..... its tremors they began to multiply on the lips and fingers right arm and right leg towards the knee. From January to this date(july) she was 6 times in the hospital ........... they did all the genetic, toxicological, neurological, metabolic, infectious tests ... but nothing find wrong again.
Avatar m tn t taper without medical assistance at this point. Status Epilepticus can be caused from drug withdrawal as well- and it is very serious. please contact your doctor and make sure you are being monitored and on other meds to control withdrawal symptoms.

Avatar n tn Continued with Keppra and Di Tan Tang 2X/day each for another 8 days. Then took her Keppra down to 1/day for 2 weeks. Then she went one day with no Keppra and the next day she had a seizure. This seizure was longer, but her disorientation was shorter. Vet then said to go back to giving her Keppra for 30 days and we will re-evaluate. So for the next 30 days she was taking Keppra 1/day and Di Tan Tang 2/day.
Avatar f tn I have recently had to come off gabapentin 3 x 300mg ad day for facial nerve pain. I had to stop them abruptly on doctors advice as I was suffering breathing problems, that was 3 weeks ago and I am still having withdrawal syptoms, anxiety and pain, has anybody had the same problem, does anybody know how long these symptoms go on for.
641243 tn?1235752084 I have had my pup in Keppra for one year. Given he is only 18lbs, the dose was prescribed in liquid form which was impossible to manage, especially for the dose required In The middle of the night. I called everyone I could think of and found an accredited pharmacy (Wellness pharmacy) who was able to purchase the powder from the manufacturer for me. They made capsules with the dose I needed for my pup and life got better! I don't know what I would have done otherwise.
Avatar m tn I took Keppra for 3 weeks & it made me very sick. I should have told my Dr. that I was sick immediately. It has been 3 weeks 3 days since I stopped & I'm still nauseated & having chest pains. My Dr. said I should have stopped immediately. Now I am suppose to take Oxcarbazepine. I'm scared. Good luck with keppra. I hope yur son tolerates it better than I did.
Avatar f tn No matter how small or large the amount. At first I thought this a side effect of the anticonvulsant I take (Keppra) -- the instructions say to avoid alcohol because very serious interactions can occur, although they never specify what those interactions are. A couple medical professionals I talked to about it said that it's because Keppra increases the level of enzymes present in my liver, thereby speeding up my liver's metabolic rate.

452063 tn?1324074916 Your having grand mal seizures. You need to get to a hospital emergency room. You have to come off this drug slowly. You don'y want to go into status epilepticus were you have 1 seizure after another. Any decent doctor knows this. Have someone with you.
Avatar f tn may be due to ongoing seizure activity (non-convulsive status epilepticus) or persistent post-ictal dysfunction of memory related brain structures.
