At 18 months of age, he is right at the beginning of the prime age for idiopathic epilepsy to appear. It usually affects dogs for the first time between the ages of 18 months to about 3 years.
It usually takes a while for them to get used to the effects of the anti-seizure medication, and until they do, they do appear to be very drowsy and out of it. Your dog should adjust to his medication within about a month. If he doesn't, you should talk to your vet about adjusting his dosage.
There is however a very large risk of a traumatic seizure event if you try to discontinue Keppra. There is no evidence that Keppra poses any long term health risk, humans have been using it for almost 2 decades. If your 4 legged best friend is on Phenobarbital and/or K.bromide you should discuss with your vet about the risk/benefits of weaning off those and/or transitioning to Keppra as those 2 drugs can cause liver/kidney damage in the long term.
That was until one day when my dog was 4 years old, his wonderful and truly talented vet called to tell me about an epilepsy medication that was newly approved for dogs. That medicine was keppra. It took about 6 months to find the perfect dosage and the best pharmacy for the generic version. But I have to tell you that keppra changed all of our lives. His seizures diminished in severity and frequency until he may have a petit seizure a couple of times a year.

my son aged 11 years has been on sodium valproate (valparin syrup) 6 ml twice a day for the past 8 years. he has had the same dosage for all these years and no seizures. once a year my neurologist makes him have a sleep deprived eeg that has been coming abnormal so he has asked us to continue the medication. this year he ahs suddeny asked us to chnage to keppra. i am confused now because this is rather sudden and my son is used to the valparin now and has no side effects as such.
Continued with Keppra and Di Tan Tang 2X/day each for another 8 days. Then took her Keppra down to 1/day for 2 weeks. Then she went one day with no Keppra and the next day she had a seizure. This seizure was longer, but her disorientation was shorter. Vet then said to go back to giving her Keppra for 30 days and we will re-evaluate. So for the next 30 days she was taking Keppra 1/day and Di Tan Tang 2/day.

I am taking tablets for my minor neural problem for the past 4 years, The tablets i am consuming are Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal) -300mg and Levetiracetam (keppra) -250mg. Now I am looking for a tablet which should have both of this content in the same. I feel guilty that I am taking more tablets and my health condition is improved now. so I planned to reduce my tablet dosage. so I look over this- i.e.
About a month ago, I had my first seizure. I do remember most of it while it was happening, but I had no control as my arms and legs went out of control. I had two seizures happen, about 5 mins apart. By the time the ambulance drove me to the hospital, 2 miles away, I was unable to respond. I could hear/see them but couldn't move or speak. After 3 days in the hospital, the EEG, EKG and a CATscan came out normal.
I know it is still consider as new medicine for epilepsy, and there might be risks for birth defects. I just want to make sure if there has been new research about this medicine and pregnancy, I will like my future children to be healthy. Is there also a big percentage for my children to have epilepsy? How can I prevent any birth defect from happening? What medicine will be better or safer to have children with and still treat my epilepsy?
As far as I'm aware, benadry is safe for quite a long time in dogs. The general doggy dosage is 1 mg/ per pound, so that's what your vet has prescribed - most people tend to go too low on the dosage. Using it for only the summer months should be no problem at all. I had a dog who needed it a good 8 months or more of every year and it never caused any trouble. Hope it works well for your Bostie!
i had a clonic-tonic seizure about 3 weeks ago. i was put on keppra and now am having a lot of confusion and am very tired and extremely moody. is this related to the seizure and or the medication?
Keppra might not be the one that works best for you. Keppra did not work for me and I was taking around 3,000 mg a day. You might have to have a higher dose, another drug added along with Keppra or try something completely different.
So sorry, you are just going to have to talk with your neurologist.
I have no health insurance. I was finally got a really basic coverage, but it doesn't cover keppra. i've been taking keppra for a 2 months. I was switched to phenobarbitol for when I run out. since keppra is not on the charity's formulary.
I hope to God that I cant find some source of keppra before I run out. The phenobarb is scary.

For sure. Cats are at least 10 times smaller than a SMALL adult human female. What is given to us is too much for such a small animal. For example: The amount of Zyrtec I was told to give to Akira is only 1/4 of the adult human dosage. This is much smaller than the children's dosage, which is 1/2 of the adult human dosage. I would never ever give medications to Akira without her first seeing her doctor. I do know that no one should ever give Tylenol to their pets.
went to holistic vet for some homeopathic Detox and anti inflamatory Meds. All well for two weeks then two more seizures. Both holistic vet and normal vet suggested keppra . She is now on 500 mg three times a day and seems a bit more anxious and not 100% herself. A bit more jumpy and fearful of strangers. I'm told that may have to adjust dosage or add other treatment drugs depending on how this works out. Has anyone had their dog get seizures as a side effect of the dog flu vaccine?
I am, and have been on Keppra for almost 5 years. Started at age 23 and I am now 28. At the beginning they made me very sluggish, but after about 2 months I felt wonderful (since it was the first time in my life I wasn't having seizures!!)
I have noticed the following: quick to get angry, short tempered, excessive crying, like to focus on negative conversations rather than the positive, I complain a lot, and I take it out on the ones I love most.
I don't hear very many good reports about keppra with regard to it's side effects. I do hear many complaints about mood swings, aggression, cognition and memory problems, etc.. However, I have read a few comments saying it can actually HELP with mood swings and bipolar disorder (which she doesn't have). Please comment on this. My daughter has just begun this medication for seizure disorder. She has had seizures several years apart from each other.
