Is valacyclovir the same as valtrex

Common Questions and Answers about Is valacyclovir the same as valtrex

valtrex

Avatar n tn He said that valtrex is no $50 for a fill now that there is a generic brand. He said that it should work the same and you take it the same, but he said if I notice I am getting an outbreak that I need to talk to my doc about going back on the other valtrex and see if I can get it cheaper. This has thrown me for a loop as I am scared that it wont work the same or that I will get a small break out that I wont notice and infect my boyfriend.
Avatar f tn Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir. The benefit of valtrex is that it can be given at a higher dose and only once per day.
Avatar m tn If you have HSV (which I think is most unlikely) taking the valacyclovir can hinder development of the antibodies which would be detected by the blood test he plans to use. Furthermore, should the lesions recur, you can ask either your regular doctor or the dermatologist to perform a culture or, even better yet, a PCR test which would give you a more definitive result.
Avatar m tn Valtrex is the dominant brand name, valacylcovir the generic name. Do not take both; it would be an overdose. (Probably not harmful, but not recommended.) You get maximum effectiveness against oral herpes with the 2 g (2000 mg) dose taken twice a day apart; higher, more frequent, or more prolonged treatment will make no difference. 2) You are typical in not having an identifed trigger of your outbreaks. Most people cannot pinpoint particular events.
Avatar n tn My story is I contracted HSV2 on the back of my left thigh in the late 1990's not sure where, but it breakout once a year during summer months one time a year. While it was annoying I didn't take anything during the late 2000's I somehow transferred it to my face (confirmed by swab). I didn't want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day.
Avatar n tn Generic valacyclovir and brand name Valtrex are not the exact same formula. The generic is not nealry as effective. I took the brand name valtrex by GlaxoSmithKline for 9 yrs with ZERO outbreaks. My insurance changed last year and they will no longer pay for the brand name. In the 9 months I've been taking the same dose of the generic valacyclovir, I've had several outbreaks. I've tried 3 different generic manufacturers without success.
Avatar n tn I should also tell you that I started taking VaLtrex once a day at the same time as the incident. (for cold sores) I was tested 3 months later and was negative. My questions to you are... 1) Since once daily valtex is antiviral, could it be possible that it supressed hiv antibodies and resulted in false negative? 2) Does the risk lessen with no edjaculation? 3) Could the rash on my trunk been from the medicine I started taking at the same time? 4) Is my 3 month rapid test accurate?
Avatar f tn Okay but is one dose of 500mg of valacyclovir the same as valtrex? Or is it even effective?
Avatar m tn Three days ago I visited a legal brothel in Nevada and had oral and vaginal sex with a prostitute. It lasted about 5-10 minutes. I wore a condom, but there may have been some skin to skin contact at the base of my penis. Afterward I immediately cleaned this area with a disinfectant (used to clean the shower) and washed the area in the shower. The next day I saw a doctor and got a prescription for Valtrex.
Avatar n tn Any thoughts on this Dr. Hook? I’d really appreciate your final thoughts on my very last question.
Avatar f tn Do you have the same view as the above answer? What it so weird is if it's an allergy to latex the symptoms are the same as an ob....and the last time I had sex with a condom...it kind of hurt since the first time...and I had a tiny bit of blood...but my partner was a bit too rough that first night....then decided right after to take valtrex....second night was ok...third day the entry of my vagina closed itself....and fourth day was ok...for me the valtrex went into effect....
Avatar m tn Exposure is by no means the same thing as infection. In fact, the vast majority of exposures do not lead to infection. I have had patients whose partners had HSV and yet did not acquire the infection themselves over periods of years. My advice would be to stop the valacyclovir and not retest in any manner, shape or form unless you have a lesion to test. The the test to get would be a culture or PCR from a lesion, not a blood test. I hope this comment and perspective is helpful to you.
Avatar f tn HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes. Both are qualified gyno´s in their fifties with lot of experience. What else can cause blisters that recur in the same place and that have prodromes?
Avatar f tn So now that i found out that i have hsv-1 do i need to take valtrex everyday for the rest of my life if i dont want to get my partner infected?
Avatar f tn It is March 2014 and I am again taking 1000mg 3x per day generic Valacyclovir for 7 days and the redness and spots on my chin are only somewhat better than they have been but they are still there and never completely went away. It seems that the generic Valacyclovir is not doing its full job and am wondering if Valtrex name brand should be my next option or if there might be something else going on?
Avatar m tn from Europe, I cannot believe how expensive Valtrex is here in the U.S.! I just want to get confirmation that there is a Generic Valtrex that is NOT Acyclovir - it that correct? My online pharmacy is offering me Valcyclovir which is a lot cheaper than Valtrex but I just want to make sure it isn't Acyclovir before I purchase it. Thank you in advance for your help!
Avatar f tn Is hair loss a side effect of Valacyclovir/Valtrex when taken for suppressive therapy?
Avatar n tn 1. Does Valtrex interfere with the window period for an HIV test? i.e. make the window period longer? Would a 6 week test be reliable if I took the Valtrex? 2. Should I be worried about any other STDs besides HSV-2, such as HIV, etc? Thank you.
Avatar m tn About 1.5 years ago, I had my first Herpes OB (genital). My primary Dr. at the time tested a sample from a legion and only confirmed to me that it was Herpes (without any specifics beyond that). I ended up with three outbreaks in two months initially. My Dr. started me on 500mg daily Valtrex. He also tested me for HIV due to some concern, but that came back negative.
