Avatar f tn Hello unnerved, Trigeminal nerve which is responsible for sensations of the face. The cause trigeminal neuralgia is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause it, but in some cases the cause is unknown. The pain is sudden, severe, electric shock-like, stabbing that is typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek.
Avatar m tn if you bring this up to your doctor he will probably want an mri to rule out other possible causes, trigeminal neuralgia is usually diagnosed by patient description and process of elimination.
Avatar n tn Am totally stressed out over the most minor task or question Had a brain mri which came back with increased signal in white matter in brain stem signal is not diffuse, dr said it is not a tumor, not cancer, not ms, not life threatening, have an appointment with a neurologist but am a wreck. Anyone have anything like this in the brain stem? what is the significance of something in the brain stem?
Avatar f tn Thank you all for your responses and support. All I know of the clot so far - is that it is behind the sinuses and "isn't immediately life threatening". The nurse from PCP office is supposed to be setting an appointment for me with a neurologist to discuss treatment plan, she wouldn't go more into it on the phone.

Avatar f tn Hi, About a year ago, I suddenly developed shooting pains in the front of my face, above my upper front teeth. I went to the dentist, who x-rayed me, and said I had an abscess, above my left upper 1 tooth. He did root canal treatment, but could not find anything, the pain did not go away, and after several root canals, he referred me to a consultant for an apicectomy. When the operation was done, as he drilled through the bone, he said there was lots of pus to drain away.

567677 tn?1246767776 Wow, sorry, I missed this. It is a favorite topic of mine after learning a great deal about it when I had it. Trigeminal Neuralgia is literally a "pain syndrome of the Trigeminal nerve. This nerve is the 5th Cranial Nerve and supplies most of the sensation to the face. There is one on both sides. The Cranial Nerves are nerves that emerge directly out of the brain or brainstem.
378497 tn?1232143585 In general, trigeminal neuralgia is a clinical diagnosis. Patients usually report electric like shocks across one side of the face in part or all of the face. They're usually set off by brushing your teeth, cold drinks, breeze across the face, talking, or even making facial expressions. Your symptoms may be consistent with trigeminal neuralgia. You may want to ask your neurologist about your symptoms.
Avatar m tn Traumatic trigeminal neuropathy is generally not associated with trigeminal neuralgia. However, both entities may be responsive to pharmacologic intervention. Seeing a neurologist or orofacial pain specialist misadvised.
432376 tn?1266257738 I am concerned here. If this is trigeminal neuralgia, and you do not have any other indication that would tell that this is a herpes virus infection, the next option is MS. I feel this should be kept in mind and ruled out accordingly. Can you ask you neurologist for a MS work up? Do you have a family history of MS, in any of the parents?
Avatar f tn Successful treatment for the disorder should allow patients to resume an active life. It is my understanding that if surgery is not as effective as hoped it can be repeated several times. Treatment may include medications, surgery or a combination. Success rates vary from person to person and specialist to specialist. I wish you the best of luck in your search for treatment. Please let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your updates.

2047903 tn?1330187549 Hi, Now that you have tested negative for these MS mimics, do you think your neuro may turn his head back towards MS and reconsider? Although, it may be rare for some people to present with trigeminal neuralgia, I'd have to say that everyone is different. He may not to rule out out just, yet. I hope the TN will go away soon.
Avatar m tn I just had a nerve block procedure done for my trigeminal neuralgia pain in my face. My face was sore but after 3 days, the pain in my face became more painful and I felt more electrical current shooting onto my lower teeth area. Why does it seem like my facial pain just got worse after this procedure.
Avatar f tn which you need to evaluate and avoid. Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. Take care.
Avatar n tn Hi, The common causes of shooting pains on right side of head are trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, tension headaches etc.In trigeminal neuralgia there are successive bouts of face pain. This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head.
773755 tn?1328119777 Trigeminal means it is located on the fifth nerve and that is why she would have issues with hearing etc. She may also have facial pain and more symptoms. There is something called Trigeminal Neuralgia and it causes a lot of pain for a lot of people without the tumor. It could be re the differential, that they are not sure it is on the nerve. If she is only being watched, then her symptoms are probably not as severe as they would be if the tumor was if it were on the nerve.
Avatar f tn Trigeminal neuralgia is quite uncommon in people with paranasal sinusitis. Despite what is commonly believed, facial pain is unlikely to be caused by sinus disease, especially in the absence of any nasal symptoms or signs. Yet the history of long standing relief of pain following antibiotic therapy prescribed by the ENT for sinusitis must not be ignored.
Avatar f tn Then reason I am telling you guys this is because she has found something to help with the pain that comes from Trigeminal Neuralgia. It is seizure medication. The pill that you chew and it immediately gets absorbed to help with the horrible pain. It is not a permanent solution, I actually don't know of any permanent ones but it does make a huge difference in her life. Hope this info helps at least one person, my poor mom goes through so much and I would hate for anyone else to!
