Certain medications can cause a physical reaction which is known as photosensitivity. The consequences can range from itchiness to an uncomfortable rash, UV burns, or in extreme cases, death.
The underlying cause can be those sensitve to thiazide.
This can also be seen with sun exposure in some individuals. She needs to avoid triggering factors. Photosensitivity can be decreased by avoiding direct sunlight or wearing protective clothing with sunscreen (SPF more than 15).
Anti-histaminics and corticosteroids are the standard mode of treatment which should be taken after consultation from physician without delay. Take care and regards.
My MD put me on Hyzaar for hypertension. Previously I had been on Cozaar but she changed it to Hyzaar for the added benefit of the diuretic.
I noticed my drug company autosubbed generic Losortan. The bottle doesn't say anything about hydrochlorothiazide being included. Could I be getting the wrong thing, or should I assume some form of hydrochlorothiazide is included?
I have been taking Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide (HTCZ) for high blood pressure since May 2007.
Recently I have a feeling that the Hydrochlorothiazide is not working as it used to be.
Will HCTZ lose its effectiveness after a certain number of years?
Anyone know the answer or having similar experience, please let me know.

I AM TAKING HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE 25MG. I HAVE BEEN TAKEN THEM FOR 3 YRS NOW. THIS MEDICATION JUST STOP WORKING. MY DOCTOR WANTS TO ADD ANOTHER MEDICATION FOR ME TO TAKE. DOES THIS EVER GET BETTER. STAYS THE SAME OR DO THE MEDICATION YOU ARE TAKE ALWAYS GET ADJUSTED. UNTIL YOU ARE TAKEN 10 DIFFERENT MEDICATION.

I'm presently on atenolol 40 mg (along with hydrochlorothiazide) once daily. I will be transitioning to propanolol 20 mg (and hydrochlorothiazide) twice daily soon - my doctor wants me to transition by taking propanolol - 1/2 of 20 mg twice a day for one week and then the full 20 mg twice daily. Why? Won't that cause rebound hypertension?

You have mentioned of rash and redness over the cheek which may be a photosensitivity reaction. Photosensitivity reactions have varying types and this may include solar urticaria and chemical photosensitivity. Dermatographia wherein raised portions of the skin manifest after pressure may be a form of hypersensitivity reaction (much like hives) . The cause of this is not clear.
If the symptoms are persistent, a skin biopsy may be able to help establish a diagnosis.

Some people are likely to be more sensitive to heat or to sun exposure. You may be experiencing a photosensitivity reaction. Photosensitivity reactions involve a whole spectrum of skin conditions. Solar urticaria may present with a rash few minutes after exposure to the sun. Chemical photosensitivity may present with skin rash after application of creams and lotions coupled with sun exposure.

I was having the numbness and tingling while taking hydrochlorothiazide. I would stop taking it and the numbness/tingle would go away, take it again, and it would come right back. Not sure if he is taking hydrochlorothiazide. They had me on it for edema. I have swelling in my hands and ankles, all tests neg except for CMV. Battling this since April 2008. Hands so swollen, can't open bottles, hold a pen, hold a phone or peel the label off the top of yogurts..ect..
I am so confused because I have too many issues that can cause the same symptoms. Recently, my doctor switched me from Valsartan HCTZ to Hydrochlorothiazide plus regular Valsartan for my blood pressure. When I first started it, right away I was having rapid heart beat and shortness of breath so he told me take potassium supplements. That did help but now I am wondering if I am taking too much potassium.
However, this could also be due to some medications such as the combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide that is used to treat high blood pressure. Lisinopril is in a group of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) while Hydrochlorothiazide is in a class of diuretics. Tingling in the hands and feet along with dizziness, headache and cough are some of the effects that are observed in this drug combination.
Have you ever seen Ehlers Danlos present with extreme photosensitivity (malar rash without sparing naso folds and reaction to both fluorescent and outdoor UV on arms, thighs, chest, face and neck)? ANA negative; Celiac panel normal; thyroid normal; panel normal; etc.
I tried benicar and lisinopril and caused sinus drainage - however, they worked Then tried hydrochlorothiazide which cause major constipation .... Now on amlopidine beselate and coreq cr and have fatigue....seems the latter meds are overkill as I had only one coronary stent over 10 hrs ago and cardiologist a few weeks ago said my heart is fine.

This sounds like a photosensitivity reaction. Photosensitivity reactions may range from solar urticaria to more severe reactions to UV rays. In your case, this may be solar urticaria. “Solar urticaria is an uncommon disorder sometimes difficult to treat. It is characterized by the occurrence of typical whealing reactions on exposed skin a few minutes after sun exposure. The reactions resolve 1 to 5 hours after sun exposure ceases.”

Diagnosed recently with high blood pressure. New med Hydrochlorothiazide for 2 weeks. Now my upper gum & roof of mouth are red, swollen, and painful. This is not a listed side affect. What's wrong?
I have been on warfarin for nine years, and I personally have not heard of this with warfarin. There are other heart and blood pressure-type drugs that occasionally do have this side effect, though. If it has happened to you, you might consider whether another one of your medications could possibly to be the cause. If you will do an internet search for a list of photosensitive medications, you will find a number of drugs that can cause photosensitivity as a side effect.
She takes Simvastation( Lipitor) and Alprazolam (Xanex). It looks like photosensitivity has been reported with both. Any thought as to which is the most likely?
