Common Questions and Answers about Hydrochlorothiazide and hypertension

Avatar n tn My MD put me on Hyzaar for hypertension. Previously I had been on Cozaar but she changed it to Hyzaar for the added benefit of the diuretic. I noticed my drug company autosubbed generic Losortan. The bottle doesn't say anything about hydrochlorothiazide being included. Could I be getting the wrong thing, or should I assume some form of hydrochlorothiazide is included?
Avatar f tn I will be transitioning to propanolol 20 mg (and hydrochlorothiazide) twice daily soon - my doctor wants me to transition by taking propanolol - 1/2 of 20 mg twice a day for one week and then the full 20 mg twice daily. Why? Won't that cause rebound hypertension? Thanks.
Avatar n tn (found it after further testing due to high blood pressure) Dr. just put me on Lisinopril and Hydrochlort. for the hypertension. On several occasions I have been noticing some numbness in my toes. Some times it's just one toe and some times it's 3 or 4 toes. Any idea's? Could this be due to the medicine?
Avatar m tn Your blood pressure is elevated at rest, and it may worsen with exertion. You should visit your primary physician and if your blood pressure is elevated then medical therapy should be started (since it sounds as if you already have implemented appropriate lifestyle modifications). I would recommend hydrochlorothiazide as a first line agent.
Avatar n tn My electrophysiologist recently put me on a beta blocker (Metoprolol) 25 mg twice a day for hypertension and a ton of other symptoms he said must be due to Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I was diagnosed with asthma a couple years ago and it seems as if the beta blocker is causing shortness of breath and a feeling that seems similar to how I feel after exercising, a sort of chest tightness I would say. Is this common for beta blockers to do to people with asthma?
Avatar n tn I was on atenolol for 7 years and the doc has change my meds to hydrochlorothiazide. I fell good and have normal BP 125/72 but my heart rate is 90/m and doesn't slow down. Is this normal until I have more time off of the atenolol?
Avatar f tn HCTZ is a common and relatively safe and inexpensive medication that doe not cause angle closure glaucoma. Since you are having new symptoms I suggest you see an Eye MD ophthalmologist for an exam and evaluation.
Avatar m tn t have problems with heart rate (usually between 70 and 80 during the day and around 60 in the morning) before taking beta blocker I usually had quite high HR (approximately 90) I'm writing all this because it seems that I started to suffer from "Erectile Dysfunction"or at least everything seems to be pretty much different than before. Behavior has been changing during period of taking drug.
Avatar m tn What I do have is a strong family history of hypertension with my siblings and late father (he lived to 80 with hypertension and Parkinsons) all battling to bring it under control. The biggest disappointment to me is that, for six months, on Irbesartan and Amlodipine all was well under control and then, without known cause, the levels rose above where they should be for the last month or so.
Avatar f tn I've noticed over the last few years that my top number is going up, although my bottom number is around 70. Each doctor seems very unconcerned, and they always seem to blame it on stress. Well once it was my physician and I had a bad cold, the next time it was at my dentist's, and today at a rather stressful checkup for something unrelated.
Avatar n tn Based on your results I would say that you have hypertension and need to be treated. I prefer hydrochlorothiazide as a first line agent, as it has the least amount of side effects, but this may not be enough in your case. I would also take a baby aspirin daily given your family history. Given your lack of symptoms I don't think you need a stress test, but your cardiologist may disagree.
Avatar f tn I was assured Redux was VERY safe--no adverse side effects I have since learned I have pul. Hypertension and 3 damaged heart valves. This causes depression when I think about it. I was a hospice nurse. I am on Wellbutrin among others. I have NO desire to eat. I simply eat to live. Keep in touch. Blessings and prayer.
Avatar f tn HCTZ is a reasonable first line BP medication, and is actually what we often use for patients with only hypertension and no other diseases (diabetes, etc). Labetalol was chosen because it is known to be safe in pregnancy, but there is no reason you have to continue on it now that you've already delivered.
280234 tn?1532986249 Other BP meds safe to use during pregnancy include Methyldopa, Nifedipine and in some cases Hydrochlorothiazide. You can talk to your obstetrician about these options. Additionally, you should talk with your obstetrician about the risks of developing pre-eclampsia (toxemia), placental complications (e.g., abruption), preterm birth and fetal growth restriction as a result of having pre-existing hypertension. Best regards, Dr.
Avatar m tn This has lead me to start eating a heavily non-protein rich vegetable and fruit based diet, and has helped my side effects and blood pressure significantly, but this means I have to avoid almost all “normal” food. Does anybody have any clue what might be wrong? I have asked my kidney doctor, but he doesn’t even make an attempt at explaining to me what might be the problem. I have listed a bunch of medical information and history below in case it is helpful. Any ideas at all are appreciated.
Avatar f tn Working with my other doctors I have reduced a number of the meds without harm. I am still on meds for Diabetes, for Hypertension, and for Low Thyroid. Generally, I am in good health, physically and mentally active. However, I still suffer the diarreahea that comes in fits after I eat a meal and often when I am out shopping, or walking for excercise. I find the Imodium helpful to some extent, but I can never be sure it is enough to prevent sudden bouts of the diarreahea.
Avatar f tn I had some of the side effects listed under dangerous side effects and had to stop taking it. So I reminded my doctor of that and he put me on Hydrochlorothiazide. I took this for one day and was extremely sick the whole day. I started with some dizziness, and headache, then went to cramps which turned into very bad cramps. I wasn't too concerned at first because I read that as your body adjusts to it you can get a bit dizzy, and headache, and stomach upset.
1124887 tn?1313754891 I go with the literature suggesting white coat hypertension can lead to true hypertension and I think if it is a person who consistently struggles with anxiety, stress, panic attacks, I would treat them. People have heart attacks during stress (as Cardiologists we have all seen it, classic case of a man or woman coming in with a full blown heart attach after having a huge argument with someone).
Avatar n tn My wife(62yrs) started suddenly feeling breathlessness. rushed to hospital in Emergency. ECG normal, Xray normal Echo wnl check by Crdiologist says everything normal, no medication suggested, only anti hypertension drugs Losacar(50) &Atecard Am9(Atenolol 50+Amlodepine Besilate5mg) to continue as usual. Chest specialist says no problem PFT test WNL. CT Angio & all blood tests normal including D-Dimer negative. No medication suggested except rest. But breathlessness continues.
941525 tn?1245298724 If my pressure goes up above 110 over 70 flat, then my ankles swell a lot, and it takes doubling up on all hypertension medications to break the cycle and come all the way down to 110 over 70 flat. But if I have to stay up late, or if I have a lot of going to do, or if I have to go up and down a lot of stairs, which happens often, or if I get stressed out for three days in a row, MY ANKLES BLOW UP AND STAY UP UNTIL I OVER MEDICATE DOUBLING UP ON ALL THREE MEDICATIONS FOR A WHOLE WEEK.
1398693 tn?1343684738 Thank you so much for the information I knew that there are medications that didn't deplete potassium but I couldn't find which ones. right now I'm taking hydrochlorothiazide and Lisinopril and when I started to take the hydrochlorothiazide I kept ending up in the hospital because my potassium level kept dropping mainly because I have had some problems with diarrhea so no matter how much potassium rich foods I hate I couldn't keep my potassium level any higher than 3.
Avatar f tn these are medications and can have risks, and side effects, but when used appropriately are generally very safe and will definitively lower your risk of having heart failure, heart attacks, kidney dysfunction, blindness, and strokes. I would suggest starting with hydrochlorothiazide and adding a beta blocker if the blood pressure is still elevated. By the way with your numbers you do not have pre-hypertension: you have most definitely full blown stage one hypertension and need treatment.
