Anyone out there had to go on insulin in pregnancy? This is my first baby since getting diabetes 4 yrs ago but scared of needles. Had miscarriage in feb just praying this don't happen again.
My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.
I am taking Humulin-N but my sugar level every morning is around 225.
I am worried because I stuck myself with a ball point pen it didn't really bleed but left a little red mark where I got stuck. I am afraid because a person who I KNOW has hiv (he has told me) also was using one of the pen at work to punch holes in bags were were making (working at valentines shop) and stuck himself as well.. I don't know if it was the same pen but if it were does anybody think I could be at risk..
Most facilities use a seperate pen per patent, but some DO use the same pen, and change the needles, that's not really that unheard of. This is definitely not an HIV risk, and would be a VERRRRY low risk for anything else. Minute.
With the nature of how the pen works, it's not like anything gets drawn INTO the pen that could cause a risk that way.
Why are you running out !?!??!?!
If it is just running out refill the prescription early 2 days. If you have Humilin R on hand I question how old it is. If more than 30 days it is probably expired anyway. I also question having this Insulin as it has been largely discontinued for use as better insulins are now available.
But the short answer is Novolog and Humlin R do not act in the same manner so substiuting can be very tricky and is probably not recommended.
An HIV + person handed me a pen to sign for my credit card purchase that he rang out for me...handling the clothes, my credit card, and the pen...I have a healing cut-seems to be healed, peeling skin, rash from eczema, and cuticle hangnails. Could I be at risk if the man had popped a pimple, or had any other bodily fluid on his hands or pen?
You can purchase a small Sharps Container at Walmart or probably any pharmacy. I think Walmart charges almost $7 for it. I put my pen needles, lancets, and used strips in it.
My primary care physician offered to dispose of my Sharps container when it was full. I just took one to his office last week after using it for 5 months. I check my sugar 4 times a day so that should give you some idea how long the container will last.

Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

I have been on Avonex for 6 yrs, never given myself a shot (cannot do it, hate the sight of needles) my wife is a godsend. Just got switched to the pen and the first use was spectacular! I was getting ready to ask her when she was going to start, when I opened my eyes and realized she was done! I did not feel a thing, I am actually looking forward to next week to make sure it was not a fluke.
You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
Just a word of advise, we have figured this out through trial and error, we have come across two types of needles for the pen. One is just the needle (it screws on to the top of the pen) the other is a needle (it also screws on to the top of the pen) but it has a plastic cylinder around the needle which you need to press firmly against the skin in order for it to retract the plastic then exposed the needle. My son found this needle very uncomfortable.
Being diagnosed with diabetes doesn't necessarily mean you will be on insulin right away unless your doctor decides so. I have been diabetic for the past 14 years and was only reciently put on insulin. I'm using the Lentus Solostar pen method and I use the very smallest needles to deliver the insulin. There are times I actually don't feel the needle or other wise it's a very painless prick, really.
After the shots are taken the needles on the surface of the skin are removed, but the pen lines remain. When the fil;m is developed this till enable the physician to precisely determine the depth and position of the fragment.
It is possible to take an x-ray without doing this, but an x-ray film involves distortion, and this is the way to establish the exact depth and axis of travel.
The pins and needles and the 'stretchy feeling' you describe sounds more like circulation problems to me, but I ain't no doctor! But I wouldn't worry too much about it.
THIS HAPPENED WHEN I FIRST STARTED USING NOVOLOG MIX 70/30 FLEXPEN [APRIL 2009] NORDISK SUGGESTED THAT EITHER THE SAMPLE PEN(S) WERE BAD OR THEY WERE NOT STORED PROPERLY [REFRIGERATED} AT THE DOCS OFFICE !! STOPPED USING SAMPLES UNTIL MY ORDER CAME IN .. PROBLEM STILL OCCURS!!
I had blood taken earlier and the attendant rubbed her finger on my vein before gloving and then put the needle there. She was using a pen patients typically use to sign stuff after getting blood drawn. Is there any way a patient could have touched their puncture spot, then the pen, then she gets it on her and passes along? Writing it sounds incredibly stupid, but anxiety can be illogical.
