Humulin long acting

Common Questions and Answers about Humulin long acting

humulin

Avatar m tn For an insulin dependent diabetic the most effective dosing has been found to be a basal (long-acting)/bolus (short-acting before meals) regimen. But I agree with Sally. Talk to your doctor.
Avatar m tn My suggestion is to see an endo and get put on a regimen of basal and bolus (long acting and short acting) insulin and learn how to match your carbs to your insulin dose. You don't want to continue to have highs like that on a regular basis.
Avatar m tn I assume it is a long-acting (basal) type that you take just once or twice a day? It sounds as if you might now also need bolus (before meals) injections. How are your post-prandial numbers (two hours after meals)? Some people just go to MDI's (multiple daily injections) and some go to the pump. I hear people get very good results from the pump and it is certainly easier to fit in your life though I think there is a learning curve to getting used to it.
Avatar f tn How often does your friend test his/her blood sugar? Most doctor's prescribe a long acting insulin (such as Lantus) to be taken daily and then also a shorter acting insulin to be used on a sliding scale. The person tests their blood sugar before each meal and at bed time and compares the result to the scale prescribed by the doctor and inject the appropriate amount of insulin (if indicated). It is a good idea to record these levels in a journal so it can be shared with the doctor.
Avatar n tn Hello, Mister Magic! I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Humalog and Novolog are different types of fast acting insulin, meaning that they are quickly absorbed into your system to immediately drop your blood sugar. Some people find that one works more effectively than the other, so which is used is really up to the patient. Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin.
2094297 tn?1345389093 Basal Bolus approach (separate fast and long acting insulin) is going to give you better control that the 70/30. Do you have a carb-insulin ratio. You need to dose fast acting insulin appropriately to cover carbs/protein at each meal. other good books are Using Insulin - By John Walsh and Think Like a Pancreas. Don't worry how much insulin you need to take. Just take what you need to keep your blood sugars more stable.
Avatar f tn I don't know why your blood sugar is spiking after insulin-are you eating during that time? What I do know is that novolin (Regular) is a very outdated mode of insulin. The Lantus you were on was a newer basal (long-acting) insulin, but wouldn't work as well unless it was combined with a bolus (fast-acting) insulin before meals. That is the standard of care. I would see an endocrinologist and get on appropriate insulin regimen because 150-300 is much too high to sustain blood sugars.
Avatar m tn I live in Kenya and cannot find any supply of NovoLog there is only Humulin R. I need help to know if this is accceptable please!!!
Avatar f tn You may be better off using a faster acting insulin to better cover the foods you eat. Ask your Dr. about other fast acting insulin such as Humalog. Also you could cut back the amount of carbohydrates (particularly grains; pasta, rice, potato, bread, fruit, added sugars) that you eat to further help stabilise blood sugars.
Avatar n tn The concern with the metformin is if they have to put you under for a csection. I did insulin (humulin for long acting and Humalog with meals) as well. I think they prefer the insulin tho.
Avatar n tn I use humulin n as a long acting insulin , generally about 45 units a day , and humulog to keep my sugars down , lately I have been checking my sugars every half hour to try and get a grip on them , my pharmasist told me that humulog lasts up to 2 hours , I have checked my sugars after injecting it , and it generally takes 1/2 an hour to come down 6 points ( 13 to 7 ) but I have become very brittle , a bowl of porage , no milk , can send me up 6 points , should I be using my humulin R as well as
Avatar f tn hi, I always have problems with my blood sugar level. I m using humulin. even though I eat a normal portion of meal, my blood sugar goes up after each meal. but it goes down to normal level after 4-5 hours. it makes me confused because I cant inject more because I will get low, what should I do?
Avatar n tn My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.
1010843 tn?1264040668 When I was pregnant I was on humulin, 70/30 which is a combo of long and short acting insulin. I had to fax my bs results to my doctor every week and see him every 2 weeks. I had to increase quite a bit from mid to the end of pregnancy. If your Obe can't manage you ask to be referred to an endo. Yes, very important to control your blood sugar. Diet and insulin are both critical.
Avatar n tn Lantus is very slow-acting and really rarely causes severe hypoglycemia, in my experience, for warning symptoms occur long before it gets severe. However, if the warning symptoms are not listened to, I have personally noticed that the hypoglycemia that eventually happens makes me feel worse than some of the quick-acting insulins do.
Avatar f tn Why are you running out !?!??!?! If it is just running out refill the prescription early 2 days. If you have Humilin R on hand I question how old it is. If more than 30 days it is probably expired anyway. I also question having this Insulin as it has been largely discontinued for use as better insulins are now available. But the short answer is Novolog and Humlin R do not act in the same manner so substiuting can be very tricky and is probably not recommended.
Avatar n tn I use humulin R for fast acting and sometime I drop hour after but other times I just keep raising. I just started using toujeo for my long lasting and still adjusting to it. Before the switch I had severe sensitivity to the fast acting insulin and that is why the ratio is so low. I'm starting to think its to low with only taking one long lasting instead of two. Timing used to be after I ate because of the reaction i woukd have and now when I eat. When I fast my sugars stay stable.
Avatar n tn Hello! I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Lantus begins to work in about the time frame that you're beginning to sweat. Have you checked your blood sugars when you start sweating? It's possible that it's just your body reacting to a long acting insulin that it's not used to. The body reacts in strange ways, but this isn't a normal reaction.
Avatar m tn How frequent I can take insulin Humulin 70/30. I am taking 25 unit before each meal some just before meal or sometime after meal. Please advice how much I can take in a day ? How much min duration between 2 intakes ?
Avatar f tn ve decided (and sent an email) to talk to the NP at the pain clinic about switching me over to a long-acting medication for my pain. I'm thinking it will give me better relief. Even though I'm on a high dose now (45 mg. every 4 hours of oxycodone,) my pain seems to return after 2 to 3 hours. And I did have a bad flare-up this weekend; most likely due to the fact I ran low on medication due to my script not coming in the mail. Now it's a question of which medication???
Avatar f tn Most dogs do well on either Novolin N or Humulin N. Personally, I found Humulin N to work better for my dog. The cost of a bottle of insulin at WalMart is about $25 compared to $50 for the same thing at a regular retail pharmacy. 7. There are many diets you can use. You are not limited to w/d, which the vets seem to push! I don't know if your dog vomited because he didn't like the w/d, but maybe you have an idea about why that happened. It may have been because his sugar was high.
743006 tn?1232596733 i am a recovering heroin addict using methadone as my my recovery method and i have diabetes 2 and take insulin daily as well, i take 100mg methadone liquid and 20 units of Humulin N type insulin once nitely. during the day i seem ok and around 5 or 6 pm i start to go thru withdrawls really bad to wher i want drugs so far i forced myself to go to bed and havent used again i been clean since the day after thanksgiving this year a few months.
Avatar f tn Both my husband and myself have type 2 diabetes we have no health insurance so we have to buy otc insulin . I need to know how many units should be the initial starting dose of Humulin 70/30 until we can adjust according to daily bs readings.
Avatar n tn If you are in US I understand you can buy the old insulins (Humulin N and R over the counter in wallmart quite cheaply). This will be better than none. You can also get cheaper meter and strips the same way. I assume you do know how to use insulin properly. You need to check how you can get assistance. Do you have a Dr? Can you get access to any assistance. Sounds like you might be in trouble with really high blood sugars. Juice can make your sugars very high.
Avatar f tn BT pain is not a new concept. Of course, I've had pharmacists ask (when reading my Rx), "What is BT pain?" Chronic pain is not taught in medical schools, except as a side. Perhaps we need a new word -- when people see "chronic pain" they probably believe its like the pain of a broken bone, only it lasts longer. I have no idea what kind of education a pharmacy PhD grad receives on the disease state known as chronic pain.
