Common Questions and Answers about Humalog injection

humalog

Avatar n tn My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
Avatar n tn Hi BamaBelle, You seem to be very observant about your responses and patterns to your meds, and so I'd encourage you to trust your instincts here. While insulin allergies are not common, plenty of folks have them. Folks may not be allergic to the insulin per se, but they may be allergic to the buffering agent or preservative or some other component in the vial of insulin. I used this site to read about possible side-effects of insulin aspart (Novolog): http://www.nlm.nih.
Avatar n tn I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 16 years and have always been taking around 6 units of R in the morning with some N. That has seemed to work fine until recently my lunch blood sugar levels have been sky high. I keep adding more R (i'm not at 10 units) and it seems like the R is not working at all. I have even changed the bottle just in case there was something wrong with that vial and nothing has changed.
Avatar n tn s digested more slowly that what the carb coverage with Humalog allows. I usually end up doing a correction bolus of a couple units of Humalog something like six hours after the meal to get my readings down to normal. Some people have problems with potatoes, others with white flour breads -- so you'll have to discover what carbs you're sensitive to and keep an eye out for higher than normal readings if you eat them.
Avatar n tn I have been using Novolog Pens for about a year now, and recently have had several problems with their quality. My pharmacist is telling me that most diabetics use Humalog (and Novolog use is rare). Has anyone else had problems or switched from Novolog to Humalog? Are there Novolog users out there? Thanks....
Avatar m tn Hi! I'm in a 20ui HUMALOG after meals regiment, however, in between meals and during the night my blood sugar levels drop below 70. Should I stop taking the HUMALOG?
Avatar n tn I started controlling my blood sugar using Regular insulin About 3 years ago, my doctor moved me to humalog. Using humalog was not easy. I looked at the study that was done and it never reacted as expected when I used it. It was taking 2 hours to start working and in by the third hour my glucose level would drop 200 to 250. It was also hard for me to sense when my blood sugar is low. That was very frustrating. After six month of roller coaster, my doctor put me on Novolog.
Avatar n tn The reality is that when taking a 24-hour insulin, you cannot just make a 12-hour change in injection time all at once since you will either be without a base insulin working at all for 12 hours if you wait 36 hours to inject the new dose or you would be overdosed by half the amount of your total dose for 12 hours if you took the next injection 12 hours after the last injection in order to change your timing. So it needs to be done 1 unit at a time in order to not rock the boat too much.
Avatar n tn Novalog is an excellent drug, but requires a lot of insight and understanding in order not to be a danger to oneself. Many providers will not prescribe Novalog unless you are under a strictly supervised program with weekly reports to a nurse practicioner or physician. Novalog is a fast-acting insulin and it is very easy to get into trouble with it. The amount of Novalog injected depends upon the type of food and the number of calories in the portions ingested.
Avatar n tn I know our readings are different in canada , 5 to 7 is normal.I have had sugars as high as 32 and used 10 units of humalog , half an hour later I am 34 , I don't understand this ? What is the ratio of humalog to carbs ? I had the flu and I know it can really mess up your sugars , but this was a month ago .Also , I generally feel better when my sugars are around 13 , anything below that and I feel the efects of hyperglycemea , I know that does,t make sense , but it is how I feel.
Avatar m tn Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?
Avatar n tn I have recently been switched to Lantus & Humalog and I have some questions. I take it in the morning. If I awake with an abnormal blood sugar (too high) I assume I would take a small dose of fast acting. Would I also take a small dose of fast acting if my blood sugar is normal, as to cover my breakfast? I know to count the carbs before the lunch meal and the dinner meal, but didn't ask about the breakfast meal.
Avatar n tn My 9 year old son was changed to Humalog in October. Within 24 hours we noticed a complete change of personality. He became moody, violent to his siblings, abusive and completely unpleasant nearly all of the time. We stuck it out for a week and then changed him back to his normal insulin. His behaviour went back to normal very quickly. We then put him back on the humalog and left him on it.
Avatar n tn I then sometimes need to take a few units of insulin several hours later to cover the very slowly-digesting food that elevates my glucose after that first injection of insulin has peaked and petered out. You may want to experiment with fat-free meals for a few meals to see if the insulin works better when the food is digesting quicker.
Avatar n tn my fathers blood sugar is 224 how many units of levemir flexpen do i give him his Dr put him on a sliding scale. i dont know what the dosage is ???? i give him humalog the scale is 200 to 250/ 5 units and so on. Is there a guideline of units for levemir ?
Avatar n tn Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking. I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500. I think the Lantus is not lasting 24 hours. If I try to split the dose, I'm wondering if I need to just take 5 and 6, or if I need to up the overall dose.
Avatar m tn I have been a diabetic 40 years (Type 1), and started on Lantis about a year ago, replacing NPH for my basal insulin (I also take Humalog with a pen). I injected Lantis with a syringe, and as I never had a problem with NPH when it sometimes entered a vessel, I did not draw back before injecting. The result, when I hit a vessel in my leg, was a drop in blood suger from 180 to 30 in 1/2 hour!
Avatar n tn I know this is different for everyone - but generally, what is the ratio for the # of mg/dml units dropped by 1 unit of insulin. Like Humalog U100 R. Does anyone know? Lilly (the mfg. of Humalog) said that they didn't have those numbers (I didn't believe that). Just curious. I asked a Diabetes Trainers from my hospital and she didn't have an idea either.
