Humalog for insulin pump

Common Questions and Answers about Humalog for insulin pump

humalog

Avatar n tn Your doctor needs to supply aletter of medical necessity. It is illegal for the insurnce company to not let you have the right insulin for your pump. your doctor needs to get on the phone with the insurnce company. and so do you ask for a supervisor.
Avatar n tn I know this is different for everyone - but generally, what is the ratio for the # of mg/dml units dropped by 1 unit of insulin. Like Humalog U100 R. Does anyone know? Lilly (the mfg. of Humalog) said that they didn't have those numbers (I didn't believe that). Just curious. I asked a Diabetes Trainers from my hospital and she didn't have an idea either.
Avatar n tn I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat?
Avatar n tn I am wondering if anyone else has to change sites so often, and whether it could be the insulin (humalog)? We love the flexibility and precision of the pump, but this has been difficult.
Avatar n tn Hello Human Pin Cushion, My son was diagnosed at age 3. He is now 10. My sister was dxd at age 24...she is now 33. My sister did the 72 continuous glucomse monitoring last year. I think it was right before she went on the pump, as well. My son went on the pump right before she did, but he never did the 72 hr. thing. My sis had it inserted in her stomach. My sister (before pump) was on lantus and humalog doing what they call a "poor man's pump".
Avatar n tn ), is currently on lantus (she takes a shot at bedtime) and then humalog for a correction, as well as humalog to cover what she eats. (carbs) I am not suggesting you do this, but talk to your son's Endo about the possibilities because if for 5 years BGs have been up and down, something definitely NEEDS to be changed. (I know you already know this and that is why you are posting here.
Avatar n tn My daughter is currently on the insulin pump and only goes on Lantus/Humalog when her pump is malfunctioning. Thankfully (for us), this hasn't happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them.
10443766 tn?1410724207 Im 20 years old and a first time mom I was diagnosed at 9 I do my blood sugar 7 to 10 times a day and use a insulin pump im 15 weeks 2 days pregnant and to be honest its a struggle but will be worth taking extra care of my self to have a healthy baby
Avatar n tn My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
Avatar n tn I also know that Humalog is very fast acting and the combination of the both at dinnertime may be causing the rapid drops. For years, prior to being on the pump, I was put on Ultralente and Regular as part of a study to compare multiple injections with the pump. And in fact, they found that with the Ultra and Reg you could get the same kind of control that you could with the pump at that time. That's because Ultra is a long acting insulin that doesn't have the peaks that NPH does.
Avatar n tn I have been a diabetic 40 years, and started on Lantis about a year ago, replacing NPH for my basil insulin (I also take Humalog with a pen). I injected Lantis with a syringe, and as I never had a problem with NPH when it sometimes entered a vessel, I did not draw back before injecting. The result, when I hit a vessel, was a drop in blood suger from 180 to 30 in 1/2 hour! I consumed about 48 ounces of orange juces and 2 bars of chocolate in 15 minutes just to stay conscious!
Avatar f tn Me Endo is now talking about putting me on an insulin pump. She says she has 2 patients who have switched to the pump and had great success. Right now I am on Lantus 30 units AM and 40 PM and Humalog three time a day depending on the my carb intake. Is anyone out there on a pump with type 2 diabetes?
1554089 tn?1294855456 Humalog is insulin lispro, a rapid/fast acting blood glucose lowering agent. Humalog 75/25 is a mixture of insulin lispro solution [75] and insulin lispro protamine suspension [25], an intermediate-acting blood glucose lowering agent. Call your doctor's office for an explanation as to why you were put on fast acting alone.
Avatar n tn I have a question for you, are you on a pump? My nephew was on a pump like I am. The pump is filled with Humalog which works right now, so being without it all night and half the next day was why his sugars were so high. My nephew John was sick but coherent so when his monitor read 256, we thought he had the flu and so did the ER until blood was drawn, over 1800.
Avatar f tn I would ask your doc about getting an insulin pump. Im a type one and im on the pump. I use humalog. That would be the best bet. The pumps are simple to use and they seem to work really well for me.

Avatar n tn As you know, gastric bypass changes how your body processes and absorbes food, and your insulin therapy is designed for your body pre-surgery. If you are not seeing any side effects from the surgery which might be causing your issues, then you may need to tweak your carb or correction ratios to better deal with your highs. You may also want to try a faster acting fast acting insulin other than Humalog. Novolog begins acting slightly faster than Humalog.
233382 tn?1193658141 The a1c is the best test of overall control, and your son is close to the goal level. For some, going to pump therapy seems to be the best way to keep the sugar levels stable, while for others there are other insulin regimens that work best. I am not a medical professional -- I am a long-time type 1 diabetic, diagnosed at about the same age as your son. What I have seen is that each person is different, and the most important thing is to find the best regimen for each individual.
Avatar m tn Humalog is a fast acting insulin. Typically it is taken before meals - up to 15 minutes before (not after) to match the amount of carbs eaten. It's duration of action is 3 - 5 hours, with most of the action in the first 2 hours. You need to work out a carb:insulin ratio (ie. how much Humalog you need to cover how much carbs/ protein). If you are going low overnight (how low?), then you need to be taking a lower dose of Humalog with your evening meal. What time do you eat dinner?
Avatar n tn t recommend suspending your pump when you exercise. My son really never suspends his pump. Insulin does work more efficiently when you exercise which may result in lower blood sugars. Also, exercise takes some glucose out of the body to use for energy during and after exercise which also lowers blood sugars. So instead of suspending, you may want to use a temp basal. Many times the sugar goes up right after exercise due to the glucose being released from the muscles.
Avatar n tn First, you find the base number of units it takes to perfectly cover 15 carbs for YOU. That becomes your base humalog dose. Then, you add 1 unit for each additional 15 carbs you eat at the meal. Also, if glucose is higher than 110 when you test your blood sugar, I am told to subtract the number 110 from the reading, divide this difference by 30 and add that number of units to the base dose for the mealtime humalog to bring the high reading down.
Avatar n tn My daughter was taking Lantus a few years ago to prepare her body for the insulin pump. There were adjustments that were made while she was on it, such as changing the dose from PM to AM which seemed to make a positive difference in her bg's. I do not believe that we experienced any specific issues with stability or delivery at that time though. Have you searched this website for previous postings? There are many of them regarding the use of Lantus that you may find helpful.
Avatar f tn it has been extremely difficult to lose weight since I got on insulin. i am on lantas/humalog and exercise regularly. If I work to reduce my lantus dosage while maintaining a proper blood sugar will that aid weight loss? Does anything out there help to boost metabolism in diabetics? Frustrated! Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Avatar n tn 7, 1:9 and 1:18 so I take one unit of insulin for every 7, 9 or 18 carbs.) I would suggest also the book Using Insulin by John Walsh.
Avatar n tn but we had already done 12 by the time that I spoke with her, and she said if that is doing good, then I should keep it there for now. Now, they are changing his mealtime insulin to Novalog and it is in pens...so, now we get to figure this out too. LOL I am so sympathetic towards diabetics. Especially type one. My aunt was diagnosed at age 7 and died at 32, b/c she didn't take care of herself. I love being involved and able to help. It gives me a great feeling.
