I have had it scraped and cultured probably 3 times always coming back negative...but really think this has to be herpes. Is it worth trying to take Valtrex to see if this goes away? I am trying to figure out why antivirals affect HSV blood testing? Is it because antivirals suppress the virus and the body then doesn't build antibodies for it? Soo confused.
I had a herpes blood test done at 10 weeks post exposure negative for both strains.

Being on valtrex for years doesn't make your risk 0 but as mistakeguy already posted, it does reduce it by 1/2 of what it would be if you only avoided sex anytime your partner had obvious genital symptoms. Adding condoms helps with to decrease the risk but not a whole heck of a lot. You'll never get the risk down to 0.
I immediately went on suppresive treatment (valtrex) for the first 3 months I was outbreak free. Now over the last few months I have been getting more and more outbreaks until this last one which has lasted a month. I was switched to Famvir and that has still not cleared it. I am wondering if I am maybe not respondinig to anti-virals and if my outbreak may improve if I go off of them.
Honestly the outbreaks are better than they used to be. I quit taking valtrex because of the headaches, and I was starting to get a rash-which happened to me before. I already have bad migraines. If I were you I'd speak to your doctor about trying to get your periods to regulate or getting on something to help. I don't know how long you're been trying but having a period only every three months will make it more difficult. Just give your doc a call and see if you can get some information at least.
I was diagnosed with Herpes 33 years ago and have been using 1000 mg Valacyclovir a day for the past 4 years and have been free of outbreaks until a few weeks ago when I lost my job and became quite stressed.
I was able to take one extra tablet of 500 mg which stopped the outbreak from turning into blisters, but I am concerned if this medication is not working for me anymore.
I also wonder if Valacyclovir is the same as Valtrex or if Valtrex is stronger?

I have been with my boyfriend for almost 3 years now and I have been threw everything with him. I don't use and I have been there to support and try and get him clean he went from dope, heroin, coke, alcohol, weed everything. Currently he just smokes weed and drinks but, he has major anger issues where he will get mad for no reason and he want to get help but he doesn't know where to go and I don't either.
So, the virus is actually in the nerve system, not just the skin. OB's vary from once a year to maybe 3 sometimes. I have to see my family Dr. for my annual checkup in a couple of weeks. I'll approach him on the subject then. I guess I've just gotten used to them, but, I always know about 3 days beforehand when an ob is going to happen. Anyway, thanks for the info.
