Avatar n tn How often should an endo be checking to see if you need less calcium and how do they know when to take you off calcitriol? If you are on calcitriol, how can they tell if your pth is coming back normally? My endo looked at these numbers and said continue on the high dose of tums and the calcitriol and come back in 2 months!!!!! I am scared I will be on the large number of tums forever and taking Rocaltrol forever.
393419 tn?1228447393 Hi, I'm sorry, but I am relatively new to this stuff so I can't help you, but the more experienced people here will help when they see your post. But could I just ask you, have you experienced recurring broken teeth since you had thyroid problems. Only since it started with me I keep breaking teeth, and keep wondering if it has anything to do with the thyroid condition.
1916673 tn?1420233270 I have recently been reading a piece about calcitriol, which is a form of vitamin D that promotes the level of calcium in a canine body. This is not a new initiative in the treatment of kidney failure in dogs - and certainly should not be introduced without precautions - but it does have some promising effects.
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
393419 tn?1228447393 so. . .after my TT on 8/4/08, I had severe hypocalcemia. . .ended up back in the hospital for a week on iv calcium drip etc. etc. etc. i had an appointment with the endo today (Friday 9/19/08), and my calcium numbers were good: 9.6 totally normal he actually told me to stop taking the calcitriol, but when he tapped my face to do the "Chvostek's Sign", my lips spasmed. . .
4294592 tn?1354141595 My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure? Active or inactive vitamin d?
455126 tn?1212432198 m sure the surgeon will suggest something, but I was hoping from some first hand experience information on calcium issues. Does the calcium and vit D dose sound right? How long will this tingling last? Should I be drinking tons of milk or is that a BAD idea? I know nothing about this and would love some advice. Thanks so much!
Avatar m tn Vitamin D blocks the growth of cancer tumors. The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, does most of the work. Calcitriol is made in the liver and in various organs affected by cancer. This form of vitamin D offers several benefits: * Activates vitamin D receptors, which turn genes on and off * Prevents cancer from starting (Calcitriol encourages cells to either adapt to their new organ or commit apoptosis [cell suicide].
Avatar m tn I have been on a regime of Synthroid, Cytomel (T3) and Calcitriol for 18 months. Blood assays have been in the correct range for the past 14 months. No recurrence of any tumors During the past six months I have been experiencing high blood pressure and two TIA's (mini strokes). Is it possible that my supplement program could be elevating my blood pressure?
536009 tn?1293190781 Calcium carbonate, or calcium citrate is what you need to be taking as it is the best for the body to digest. Unfortunately all calcium supplements like iron supplements do tend to cause the old bowel to seize up. Best to drink a ton of water through the day to counter balance that. I take 5 x 600mgs tablets per day so I know what you mean! Brand versus generic is really no contest. In fact many brand name companies also supply the generic.
Avatar m tn Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition. Collectively, these findings suggest that vitamin-D(3) has an anti-viral activity which is mediated by its active metabolite.
Avatar m tn If parathyroids don't "work", typically, they are removed, in order to prevent problems. Possibly, one or both of them "does" work, at least, intermittently in order to raise your levels that high? This does seem to be a parthyroid issue.
Avatar f tn Since then, have been hypocalcemic and taking multiple daily doses of calcium and Calcitriol (1500 mg calcium, 3xdaily). Both endo and surgeon say it can take up to a year for normal calcium production to resume. I had RAI (200 mCi) Feb. 29 and started on Synthroid March 3. Trying to fit all of the calcium doses around the Synthroid (no calcium 4 hours before/after Synthroid) is problematic.
Avatar n tn We brought her in for dental work and the blood tests showed high creatinine and urea. Her phosperus levels are normal with elevated calcium. She is showing no signs of sickness. Her appetite is great, lots of energy, etc. 4 years ago another blood test showed the same calcium levels but normal kidney function. My vet(s) are confused by the test results. All her other blood tests are normal (sodium, pot, protein, etc) We are giving her subcutaneous fluids, a kidney diet and some probiotics.
4294592 tn?1354141595 I received a call from my doctor saying my vitamin d levels are low. She did not give me the range. I have hypoparathyroidism due to surgery i take 50mcg's of calcitriol a day to mantain calcium level. She wants me to add another 25mcg's of calcitriol because my vitamin d is low. Does that sound right? Because i would think that the test she did would have to be specific looking at the active and inactive forms of vitamin d. I dont know what to do but i dont think she is right..
Avatar f tn I am taking calcium supplements and vitamin d, but just learned that I need to be taking activated vitamin d, (Calcitriol). The problem is that Calcitriol gives me horrible stomach pains. Does anyone know of any other activated vitamin d I could use? More importantly, has anyone out there had their parathyroid function resume/completely recover after months of low parathyroid function? It's been over 5 months since my surgery, and they still haven't kicked in.
Avatar n tn Once the sum of the blood calcium multiplied by the blood phosphorus levels are less than 40, then that dog (or cat) is a candidate for a natural product called Calcitriol. Calcitriol is a natural form of Vitamin D that was formerly used for human dialysis patients to restore kidney function. Calcitriol is currently available for dogs and cats in kidney failure and veterinarians order it through various compounding pharmacies.
Avatar f tn These cells express CYP27B1, the gene encoding for the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the vitamin-D hormonally active metabolite, calcitriol. Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition.
Avatar f tn Hi MyndiLynne, Can you give an update on your status? How did your surgery go, how did you feel afterwards?? I am due for a TT this month. Thanks.

139126 tn?1255036991 Was told my parathyroids were not touched and my calcium levels have been really good. Dr had me take .25 mg of calcitriol daily for 4 weeks; just weaned down to .25mg every other day. Taking 2000 mg of calcium a day plus whatever I get in my diet. My most recent serum calcium test came in at .88 which my Dr says is below normal and he's concerned. Is it usual for your parathyroids to stop working so long after surgery? I thought issues like this became apparent sooner?

Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!! I showed blood work "pre" TT and Ca was 8.4 so run lowish. Took Calcitriol for 3 days, asked endo if I could try OTC to raise it, didn't like the Calciriol...
Avatar f tn They are suppose to strip my membranes how does that work? Does it hurt.
