Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease symptoms diagnosis

Avatar n tn Your test results seem to suggest Graves' Disease. A good article on it can be found at the Mayo Clinic web-site here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/graves-disease/DS. In short, though, if you have Graves' Disease, your immune system is mistakenly attacking your thyroid.
Avatar m tn I don't understand your question. Are you asking for a diagnosis? What are your actual test results for TSH, FT3, FT4, TPOab? Please post them, along with the reference ranges, since these are lab specific.
2079117 tn?1332020390 My endocrinologist diagnosed me with Graves Disease based on the low TSH and high TSI. However, the only symptoms I have are fatigue and possibly anxiety, although I don't have anxiety in general--usually just around exam times. If anything I am more sensitive to cold than to heat (and have always been), absolutely do not have trouble sleeping (it's waking me up that is difficult!), and have never in my life LOST weight. I have gained 5 or so pounds in the past year..
Avatar n tn I am very concerned for her and have talked to a friend who is an MD and they said without a doubt it is Graves disease. This MD has not met her, though says she needs to see a doctor asap! She also mentioned to me that she should not be caring for young children as the episodes I described to her demonstrated her emotional state. My question is...can someone tell (as this doctor has) without a doubt with a list of physical symptoms that she does indeed have graves?
Avatar f tn 4 yrs ago i was diagnosed with graves disease and since i was about to move out of state and lose medical for a while my dr treated me in a hurry. After being assured that Graves disease was most likely what was wrong with me and having to sign a million wavers I was given a low dose of radioactive iodine and sent packing. Within 2 weeks of the treatment I was in the ER, I'm not sure what the level was but apparently I went from dangerously over active to crazy low.

Avatar m tn Hello! I was diagnosed several years ago with graves disease and had my thyroid removed due to a large nodule that formed. After the surgery, my ANA started becoming positive (not sure of any tiers) and now my RNP is elevated at 2.5. I have no symptoms except fatigue and brain fog, but I also have a toddler...so that's pretty common :). My rheumatologist said that everything is fine, but I am worried that this will turn into something later on.
Avatar f tn How did your family doctor make the diagnosis of Graves disease? Did he perform a radioactive iodine uptake scan? Did he test your blood for antibodies that are present with Graves disease? An endo is much more familiar with the diseases of our glanduar systems, but that doesnt mean your gp. couldnt make the call. I have Graves and my immediate symptoms were: rapid heart beat, weight loss, shakey hands, anxiety attacks and a few more.
Avatar n tn After being diagnosed with Graves Disease, I opted to have my Thyroid obliterated using the Radioactive Iodine Therapy procedure. During the transition of losing the Thyroid, I lost a good portion of my vision in my right eye. Was told that the vision loss is due to AION (Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropothy). Once I lost my vision, I began to feel "unbalanced" or "light headed" at all times. Sometimes this feeling diminishes but it never really disappears.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Graves disease 11 years ago. My endo prescribed Methimazole, which I was allergic to, so he told me he didn't want to prescribe me anything else because sometimes the allergy kills the thyroid. It apparently did, because all of a sudden I was hypo and I had to go on synthroid. Since then, I lost my health insurance and got handled by my PCP instead of the endo (cheaper).
Avatar f tn hi I have recently seen my doctor about 2 lumps on either side of my neck, he done blood tests which he said were basically fine, I am now having blurred vision and the lumps are causing uncomfortable ache in the back of my head, I have read about graves disease and many of the symptoms I have, could the doctor have missed graves disease?
Avatar n tn Elevated TPOab is, typically, a basis for a diagnosis of Hashimoto's, which IS a thyroid disease and can be present for many years without symptoms, though many/most people aren't ever tested for it until they have symptoms of the resulting hypothyroidism. Slightly elevated TPOab can also be present with Graves Disease, which is another thyroid disease, and there are those, that have both Hashi's and Graves.
Avatar f tn Have you been tested for thyroid antibodies to make sure you do, in fact, have Graves disease and are not simply in a hyper phase of Hashimoto's? Both Graves and Hashimoto's are autoimmune. While Graves is always connected with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's is most often connected with hypothyroidism, however it's not uncommon for one to have periods of hyperthyroidism in the beginning stages. You should ask for thyroid antibody tests.
Avatar f tn M PCP told me i had graves disease and referred me to an endo. The endo said that all of my symptoms "were in my head and nothing was wrong". A few years go by and I see my PCP again and asked how I have been treating my thyroid problems and I said "I don't have one". He showed me the consult report from the Endo confirming my PCP diagnosis. My question is this, What am I to do now? I have lost about 20 lbs. when i only weighed 110 2years ago and hair loss.
Avatar f tn My GP has diagnosed me with Graves Disease after obtaining the following lab results: TSH <0.03 (RR 0.40 - 4.00) Free T4 13.2 (RR 10.6 - 20.5) Free T3 5.4 (RR 3.3 - 6.2) Thyroglobulin Antibodies 17 (RR <150) TPO Antibodies 399 (RR <50) Thyroid ultrasound- "...thyroid normal in size, however diffusely inhomogeneous with increased vascularity..." - Both antibodies tested can be present in BOTH Graves and Hashi's.
Avatar f tn Did I develop neutropenia from the Graves disease and how do I stop the neutropenia from getting worse? Also, what are some things that I should avoid as a result of my neutropenia? In addition, my heart rate ranges from 120-140 and I feel very tired and confused. Are these feelings a result of my heart rate? Thank you in advance.
Avatar m tn Low tsh can be a sign of Graves Disease, which causes eye problems and goiters like you are describing.
Avatar f tn Sure enough, it came back positive at 153%. Endo confirmed it was Euthyroid Graves Disease. I made an appt with an opthamologist who said I have no evidence of any eye disease at this time. I should also mention I was dx with insulin resistance a month ago. My questions are :1. Isn't it unusual to have neg TPO and TG in Graves? 2. Should I be worried that the lymph node present did not have well defined hilum-- how like is this cancer? 3.
Avatar n tn How dangerous is Graves Disease? How long can it go untreated. I have no symptoms--I'm not hyper, in fact, I'm always tired, my eyes don't buldge nor does my neck. My TSH level is .01, T4 is 4.26 T3 2.35. Can this be treated through diet?
Avatar f tn Levo is NOT a treatment for Graves' disease. In fact, taking levo if you are hyper would make your hyper symptoms much worse. Adding more thyroid hormones to an already overproducing thyroid could kill you. When you saw the endo, you say you were already on levo that your PCP had prescribed. After diagnosing Graves', did the endo change your meds? Did you continue to see him? Many of us as very sensitive to meds increases and have to take them in smaller steps than others.
1494095 tn?1288784877 List your symptoms-fast heartrate, anxiety, losing weight and heat intolerance are big.Somtimes Graves disease can be subclinically diagnosed but usually TSI is always positive .
Avatar f tn Sorry, gonna chime in here. Hope you don't mind. I also have Graves Disease. Graves Disease is a complicated Autoimmune Disease. However, it would not cause lesions in the brain or spine. I know this because I just had a visit with my Endo this week after a Neurologist found several T2 FLAIR lesions throughout my Supratentorial region. I now have to do more testing.
1918828 tn?1328123158 Someone asked this same question on Elaine Moore's website. Elaine Moore is a medical writer and clinical laboratory scientist, MT, CLS, with more than 30 years of experience in immunology. A good person to ask on immune issues! This is from her website: TSI Test Results Hi, I have been having a lot of hyperthyroid problems lately and just got some TSI test results back that I'm a little confused about. I have a result of 74 with a reference range of 0-139.
Avatar n tn My daughter was diagnosed with Graves on June 4th. She is 6. Luckily, I'm a teacher and have been able to stay at home with her the past couple of months to get this under control. I feel like our lives have been turned upside down. We started out with a sore throat and a diagnosis from an ENT of Thyroiditis......We ended up seeing a pediatric endocrinologist in an emergency visit because of her heart rate. We've been on methimazole since.
Avatar f tn Ticks can potentially spread various diseases (eg: Lyme disease) so it's possible you have been infected and this has caused sudden changes in symptoms. Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) are seen in both Hashimoto's and Graves disease. In Graves' disease, the antibody to test for is called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) - sometimes called TSH receptor antibody (TRAb).
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 2003 and opted for total thyroidectomy once they found cold nodules in my uptake scans. Biopsy revealed that I had papillary cancer in addition to Graves. RAI treatment went well and I was declared cancer free in 2008. I now have questions after 7 years regarding the Graves. Once the cancer was found all my doc talked about was the cancer, Graves was pushed to the side and we treated and talked about only the cancer.
