I went to human vitamin store and got her some glucosamine supplements. I got the liquid flavored glucosamine and the glucosamine soft flavored chew. I know some cannot swallow pills. My dog eats the chews if I slightly warm them. She will not touch the liquid. I would rather put a pill in some meat or something. It is much easier for her to take. I put her back on a food with glucosamine and she isnt having any problems. I learned my lesson about changing foods.
She is about 47 lbs and is having hip discomfort......I want to buy a glucosamine supplement to see if help but some of them that I am seeing have a lot side effects....Do you have any suggestions for one that has less side effects?
ive been giving my dog which is 17kg 1000mg of glucosamine every day for a week which i will now reduce to 500mg a day is there any thing else i should give him with this or is glucosamine alone ok my dog has early signs of arthritis in his back legs its a bit of an effort for him to get up now he is 10 yrs 3mths old and had cruciate ligament surgery back in may last yr and in the other leg about 5 to 6 yrs ago

In addition to making the tea, I also buy candied ginger. Sometimes I nibble on it and sometimes I chop it up and add it and the syrup to vanilla ice cream. You can also buy ginger in capsules.
If you wish to try it make sure you are not allergic to shell fish (glucosamine) or MSM (from pine tree bark) or Arnica ( arnica montana flower). You can buy MSM and arnica lotions separately and there is a glucosamine product that is made from corn but it is expensive. I am also taking vitamins which seems to be helping too.
The homecooked food sounds good. Maybe a slightly smaller portion each meal time? Is Gycoflex Glucosamine plus some extras? Is he on the maximum dose for his weight?
Yes arthritis can be painful, but sometimes the pain can ease with gentle exercise little and often. But he will probably need some medical help for this. So get him to a vet.
At any rate, there are so many remedies for joint inflammation -- MSM, chondroiton and glucosamine sulfate, proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain, quercitin, vitamin C, ginger, turmeric, boswellia, devil's claw, yucca -- I mean, the list is very long. Perhaps the best thing is to buy a good book on natural treatment of this problem since there are so many combinations of options to choose from.

I would certainly give him a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement. I give my dog 500mg Glucosamine plus 200mg Chondroitin, and she weighs 28lbs. She had a broken legf years ago, and very occasionally got a twinge and a slight limp. Since starting the Glucosamine....within a few days!! she did not show any discomfort at all, and has not shown signs of twinges yet.
Apparently it works better alongside vitamin C.
I just recently started taking glucosamine and Chondroitin to help my knee recover from a dislocated patella. but for some reason my contact lenses have become very dry is that a side effect of the glucosamine??. I have used this type of soft contacts for a long time but never experienced this problem. Thanks.
My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight.
So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose.
As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement.
You could mention this to your vet perhaps.
My dog is 12 year old and has arthrits and the vet told me to use glucosamine. In the summer time he does not need it. Now my dog is whimpering and shakeing, when I pet him he stops. This started a couple of days ago. The weather got really cold fast and I just started him back on glucosamine. Does this sound like the arthrits acting up or do I need to worry? How much glucosamine can I give him? I hate when my dog is in pain, I have had him since I was in kindergarden.
I checked UBAvet, did you give their liquid glucosamine to your dog? I tried Synflex for him but he got severe diarrhea, might be due to the numerous other ingredients in the formula.
I also buy the Pedigree dog food which has one where it has glucosamine in it for healthy joints. Ofcourse ask your vet if Glucosamine would be ok for your dog to take because I don't know if hip arthritis and hip dysplasia is the same thing. I hope and pray your baby gets better.
Go to your local heath store or drug store such as CVS or Walgreens and get a Glucosamine / Chondroitin combination suppliment. It comes in capsule form, tablet, and liquid form. You decide which will be easier to administer to Sassy. This suppliment can not hurt her it can only help her. It is safe to give to her everyday and she should get it everyday at her age. Your Vet will have some that is much more expensive than that in the stores but it is more potent.
