Common Questions and Answers about Glucosamine in pet food

glucosamine

Avatar n tn I have always fed them a really good food with the added glucosamine. I just recently changed foods to one without glucosamine. My lab started limping really bad. I went to human vitamin store and got her some glucosamine supplements. I got the liquid flavored glucosamine and the glucosamine soft flavored chew. I know some cannot swallow pills. My dog eats the chews if I slightly warm them. She will not touch the liquid. I would rather put a pill in some meat or something.
Avatar f tn My dog is 12 year old and has arthrits and the vet told me to use glucosamine. In the summer time he does not need it. Now my dog is whimpering and shakeing, when I pet him he stops. This started a couple of days ago. The weather got really cold fast and I just started him back on glucosamine. Does this sound like the arthrits acting up or do I need to worry? How much glucosamine can I give him? I hate when my dog is in pain, I have had him since I was in kindergarden.
1356964 tn?1302087435 However, they still like their dry too so I am on a mission to find a dry cat food that would be acceptable for my spook and boys that is not too high in magnesium, phosphorus and ash. I was feeding Wilderness Blue grain free but am hesitate on going back to it as Spook developed infection and crystals while on it. I am also not real thrilled with the CoseQuin since it has dyes and sodium lauryl sulfate in it. Any suggestions on a high quality dry cat food ?
675347 tn?1365460645 It is usually 500 mg. tablets. I have used the brands that you can buy in the health food stores but I do spend the extra money at the Vet because Bullies get very sore hips and will push them to the point where they can't move the next day if they get excited too much. So I give them Consequin DS. Here are the recommended doses by weight: 10-24lbs - 1 tablet daily 25-49lbs - 2 tablets daily 50-100lbs. - 3 daily Over 100lbs- 4 daily I give mine 2 a day. The average weight is 55lbs.
441382 tn?1452810569 I had the same question a while back, in the Spring. Misty had been showing a bit of possible arthritis in her right hind leg which was broken once. I asked the vet about this because I didn't want to pay premium prices for a "pet brand" Glucosamine, and he said Glucosamine is exactly the same substance, whether it's formulated in a preparation for dogs, or people. And Chondroitin is the same. I believe they are both natural substances obtained from shellfish.
Avatar n tn My dog saw a holistic vet in January for a severe ear infection, before then he was able to walk (40 min.) twice a day. He took a whole course of Baytril right before his blood test was taken and a month ago he got some antibiotic eardrop efloxacin. The vet suspected that he might have arthritis and Cushings because he was urinating more often in the evenings, had a ravenous appetite and his blood test indicated high potassium level.
2121656 tn?1395674749 Thanks for checking for a duplicate posting. I'm new to this site and still trying to figure it out. She actually has tramadol left from her surgery in Feb. 2011 and there's no expiration date. She also has Glucosamine tablets we purchased from the vet. However, we can't get either down her. We try with a piece of turkey, roast beef whatever will help get them in her. She's spits them out.
6669309 tn?1462648142 Nutritional supplements Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are two substances that have fast become the standard treatment in canine age-related arthritis. These are often sold as a single combined substance in good pet shops and quality supermarkets. Alternatively, just look up "Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate for dogs" on Google and you should find a supplier.

1358341 tn?1282209843 I am sorry, the correct name for the fish oil is ICELANDIC, comes in Salmon UNSCENTED, which is great because fish oil can be of a strong odor.. The Flortiflora is good for diarrhea AND constipation as it puts the good flora back into the colon and helps with the digestive tract. It also has antioxidants and vitamins..Ask your vet ot look it up on the web. You said blood analysis wasn't complete, so I am assuming one was done and is not back yet ??
1388999 tn?1370042814 You can get it at drugstores in the supplement section, or in better pet shops. The human grade is the cheapest. You can give as a capsule or just dump it on the food. Hope it helps!
Avatar n tn Pups have different nutritional needs that adult dogs. Missing Link is a great vitamin but can sometimes be difficult to find in pet stores. Since GSDs tend to have hip and knee issues as they get older, a vitamin that includes glucosamine and chondroitin might be a good choice for your dog. Hope that helps a bit, and good job for trying to do the best thing for your dog.
694961 tn?1228732588 vitamin c in large doses (buffered kind), msm, hyaluronic acid, and the combo of magnesium and B-1 (thiamin) can help relax muscles in the back, a little known but often effective avenue to try. i had one major success with that in someone with DDD. green-lipped mussel and all that shark cartilage is often the raw materials for glucosamine and is nothing special in my own opinion, but if it works use it.
Avatar n tn Otherwise, he is extremely active, runs with my younger dog, shows no signs of limbing. His weight is great. He is taking a glucosamine supplement which hasn't done much. All his blood work is fine. Is there anything I can do for him to prevent this from getting worse?
Avatar n tn my mother in law is on coumadin and has arthritis in her knees and back. Can she take or use things like ginger,or glucosamine sulfate without affecting the coumadin?
Avatar f tn for instance if he weighs twice that, give him 2 capsules, that would be 1000mg Glucosamine and 400mg Chondroitin) It has worked wonders for her, as she was starting to develop arthritis in a leg which was once broken, when she was 4 years old. I have not seen her limp or favour that leg even ONCE since I started her on the tablets about 18 months ago. If he doesn't like taking pills, you can open these and sprinkle the contents on your dog's food. They taste pretty bland, not bitter.
Avatar m tn Yes there is no harm in getting a second opinion. It may be hard for you because it sounds like you live quite far from towns? But drive the extra miles, because it might be worth it. I can't tell you exactly what might be wrong with your guy, or what treatment he should have, but it is very possible there is something which would alleviate his symptoms. No-one knows till they try. I do not necessarily agree with 'giving up' on a dog just because he's getting on in years.
Avatar f tn Her weight was 30lbs so the dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine and 200 of Chondroitin (combined in one capsule once daily with food.) For a 47lb dog you would probably be looking at between 500mg (Glucosamine) and 700mg, and Chondroitin between 200mg and 300.
Avatar m tn NutriSource Pet Food has done a poor job of making healthy dog foods. Healthy dog foods do not include needless grains and other pet health damaging ingredients. Brewer's rice and brewer's dried yeast are by-products of beer production. There you go, your little pet gets what is left over after a beer run, the stuff not fit for human consumption. Poultry Fat - Used to encourge pets to eat a product the pet would normally not eat. NutriSource does not tell us what type of Poultry.
Avatar n tn ive been giving my dog which is 17kg 1000mg of glucosamine every day for a week which i will now reduce to 500mg a day is there any thing else i should give him with this or is glucosamine alone ok my dog has early signs of arthritis in his back legs its a bit of an effort for him to get up now he is 10 yrs 3mths old and had cruciate ligament surgery back in may last yr and in the other leg about 5 to 6 yrs ago
Avatar f tn And when he starts to walk, he limps. At his last checkup in May my Vet told me that it was arthritis in his knees. Is there anything I can give him to help with the pain and stiffness? The Vet offered a perscription, but I would like to try something over the counter first. Can I give him aspirin or would it hurt me? Any advise would be appreciated.
Avatar m tn But an analysis of studies looking at glucosamine or chondroitin for osteoarthritis in the hip or knee did not show that these supplements slow joint destruction or relieve pain. It's kind of gone by the wayside. It was found to not be the wonder supplement it was once thought to be. Multiple studies revealed that they will not help you more than a placebo. However there are still ppl that swear they help them.
1524673 tn?1327841500 In addition, we have no respect for the philosophy of these pet food companies. In our opinion, they are clearly dedicated to their bottom line with a total disregard for the health and well-being of our beloved furry companions. They are truly a far cry from the best dog foods available! It is highly unlikely that any of these awful supermarket brands on our list of Bad Dog Foods will be carried or recommended by any respectable, independent dog food store.
Avatar f tn The guidelines on the food bags are really just that - basic guidelines. They are very generalized based on how much a dog should need each day to maintain its body in good weight. What they don't (or can't really) take into consideration is how each dog is different. Some are easy keepers, needing very little food to maintain their body weight, while others might need almost twice the recommended daily ration to stay in good weight.
