Supplements to a dog's diet such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate, Omega Fatty Acids, Vitamin E, Selenium, and MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) all assist in decreasing inflammation and improving the body's ability to repair and strengthen tissues. Supplements, however, will not reverse structural changes in a joint such as torn cartilage, calcium deposits and advanced scar tissue.
His blood work showed high BUN and creatinine so was also diagnosed with renal failure. After leaving the vet, the doctor put him on Royal Canin LP dry food for renal failure. He is also on Epakitin. It has been almost 2 months and we took him back to be neutered and have blood work done. However, Italian researchers have found that the LD50 (the lethal dose at which half of the animals die) of glucosamine sulfate is 8000 mg/kg. In humans this would be equivalent to ingesting over 500,000 mg at one time or 1,000 pills each containing 500 mg.
I hope this is useful... I got the idea from the site that max safe dose is 1500mg, and your dog had twice that much. You may want to see the vet anyway, even tho it says in the previous paragraph that a lethal dose is 8000mg.

Most people with arthritis have some nutritional deficiencies, including lowered levels of vitamins A, B6, B12, and C. Glucosamine sulfate can help. The proper levels of minerals like magnesium and selenium is also important. Most arthritic patients need detoxification from heavy metals like mercury.
Eliminate refined foods. Eat a whole-food diet including unrefined sugar, salt, oil, and flour, and as much organic produce as possible.

At any rate, there are so many remedies for joint inflammation -- MSM, chondroiton and glucosamine sulfate, proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain, quercitin, vitamin C, ginger, turmeric, boswellia, devil's claw, yucca -- I mean, the list is very long. Perhaps the best thing is to buy a good book on natural treatment of this problem since there are so many combinations of options to choose from.
Other options include omega 3, and glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate. Studies indicate that both seem to act as natural anti-inflammatories. Finally, I have had success sending patients for acupuncture to aid in their pain relief and recovery from orthopedic problems.

ve seen an awful lot of people get relief from using glucosamine chondrointin sulfate combos along with anti-inflammatories, including my father-in-law, recent studies say it doesn't work. I have always fed them a really good food with the added glucosamine. I just recently changed foods to one without glucosamine. My lab started limping really bad. I went to human vitamin store and got her some glucosamine supplements. I got the liquid flavored glucosamine and the glucosamine soft flavored chew. I know some cannot swallow pills. My dog eats the chews if I slightly warm them. She will not touch the liquid. I would rather put a pill in some meat or something.
