Common Questions and Answers about Glucosamine in cats

glucosamine

Avatar f tn Something similar is a glucosamine/chondroitin combination. Again, be sure it's formulated for cats. In humans, both the avocado-soybean unsaponifiables approach and the glucosamine/chondroitin approach seem to have about equal effectiveness. While talking to the vet, also check about prednisolone is not being considered. It's a steroid and often given to dogs, maybe it's not done that much in cats? But it reduces inflammation.
4190741 tn?1370177832 Metacam® is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication. Its usage in cats for the treatment of arthritis is controversial and off-label (being administered in a way not approved by the FDA). If your cat is being treating with Metacam®, it is important to make sure that your cat does not become dehydrated and is not suffering from kidney disease.
675347 tn?1365460645 Please does anyone know the dosage of Glucosamine Sulphate for dogs? How many milligrams per pound body weight? Also, is it ok to give my dog the regular Glucosamine (which people take) as it is so much cheaper to buy that at the supermarket, than to get it from the vet, or to buy dog treats which contain it! Thanks for any help or suggestions, anyone. Ginger.
Avatar f tn I also buy the Pedigree dog food which has one where it has glucosamine in it for healthy joints. Ofcourse ask your vet if Glucosamine would be ok for your dog to take because I don't know if hip arthritis and hip dysplasia is the same thing. I hope and pray your baby gets better.
Avatar f tn The treatment for FLUTD is very involved including antibiotics such as zithromax, amitriptyline medication which is a tricyclic antidepressant, Cosequin for cats, which is a glucosamine supplement that also helps with the lining of the bladder, cranberry supplementation, all canned diet (no dry food), Eight Rightous teapills (Chinese herbal supplement), Fluid therapy, if crystals are found in the urine than a special diet is necessary to eliminate the crystals and much more.
161647 tn?1280608163 The only thing I can think of was that my mom started taking Glucosamine last year. Can the Glucosamine affect eye vision. Or does anyone have any suggestions. My mom is worried that there is something seriously wrong because the doctor said the next step is too see a retina specialist. Thanks for any advise.
Avatar f tn My dog is a 13 year old border collie/lab mix, who is due for a rabies shot this summer. We live out in the country, but she doesn't leave the immediate yard for anything, because of her age. Is it safe for a dog that age to still get rabies shots? She has always had them every three years, but now I read that the actual vaccine last a lot longer than the three years that is claimed.
Avatar n tn (also an adopted cat will have already been dewormed by the shelter. also anal gland problems in cats are rare). Sounds like she is urinating in the box - that's a big help. Pick up the stool and place it in the box, leaving several in the box (not many more) so she get's the idea that's where its supposed to go. it is impractical to follow your cat around and catch her mid-poop then run her to the box. this will only make her afraid of you and stop the defecation.
Avatar n tn My dog saw a holistic vet in January for a severe ear infection, before then he was able to walk (40 min.) twice a day. He took a whole course of Baytril right before his blood test was taken and a month ago he got some antibiotic eardrop efloxacin. The vet suspected that he might have arthritis and Cushings because he was urinating more often in the evenings, had a ravenous appetite and his blood test indicated high potassium level.
Avatar f tn Hi megmeg74, You said your senior cat is having trouble tolerating senior dried food. Perhaps the senior dried food you are giving her comes in cans. Wet food is actually better for older cats and easier for them to digest and eat. As for giving your kitty something to help her stiff joints, I am going to leave this for another Medhelp member on the cat forum to comment on. There probably is something, but I don't know what it is. I wish you both well.
Avatar f tn The older one lost patches of hair on either flank, along the majority of his tail, and thinned hair in various spots on his legs. The younger one lost hair on his rump and around the base of his tail. I managed this with weekly oatmeal baths, and using some sulfur-based skin ointment (just sulfur and oil, which worked great on our horse) we fixed the problem; the dogs stopped chewing, and the hair grew back. This summer its back.
1093971 tn?1257833640 What form is the glucosamine in? What is the total daily dose? Are there any other ingredients? What type is the glucosamine? How pure are the ingredients? If you’re considering taking glucosamine with chondroitin you have another ballgame. Since you didn’t ask about the latter I’ll stick to glucosamine by itself. If you search the Internet you’ll see inconclusive evidence of glucosamine having negative effects on blood sugar.
Avatar m tn 5 pound schnauzer and has been limping a bit after exercise. I have started giving her 500 mg of glucosamine a day and wanted to know if this is the right dosage?
Avatar m tn Within two to three weeks, our surviving dog seems to have aged as much as the terrier did in HER last six months. Can depression in dogs actually lead to their rapid decline in health? I realize our dog is very old but she has always been so sturdy, so solid. Now she seems to be having problems with her hips, her hind end has suddenly become thinner, she has developed something of an awkward gate in her hind quarters - just like the other one did over a much longer period.
746512 tn?1388807580 than Vit C can be used to help acidify but only in an acute stage...cats do make their own C, however in times of stress levels decline.,,,,500mg and Feliway did your Vet tell you to try this? Its a natural hormone spray that helps to calm kitties...my clinic has this on hand but if not most petstores will.
Avatar f tn I just recently started taking glucosamine and Chondroitin to help my knee recover from a dislocated patella. but for some reason my contact lenses have become very dry is that a side effect of the glucosamine??. I have used this type of soft contacts for a long time but never experienced this problem. Thanks.
Avatar f tn My dog is 12 year old and has arthrits and the vet told me to use glucosamine. In the summer time he does not need it. Now my dog is whimpering and shakeing, when I pet him he stops. This started a couple of days ago. The weather got really cold fast and I just started him back on glucosamine. Does this sound like the arthrits acting up or do I need to worry? How much glucosamine can I give him? I hate when my dog is in pain, I have had him since I was in kindergarden.
Avatar m tn My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight. So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose. As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement. You could mention this to your vet perhaps.
Avatar n tn I would certainly give him a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement. I give my dog 500mg Glucosamine plus 200mg Chondroitin, and she weighs 28lbs. She had a broken legf years ago, and very occasionally got a twinge and a slight limp. Since starting the Glucosamine....within a few days!! she did not show any discomfort at all, and has not shown signs of twinges yet. Apparently it works better alongside vitamin C.
