I don't have Bipolar 1 but Geodon helps my depression for sure along with of course my psychosis since it's an atypical antipsychotic. It's FDA approved to treat Bipolar mania and my therapist told me even though it's not FDA approved to treat depression it still has a mood stabilizing effect. It might not be working right for you as medications work differently for everyone.

It works better than Geodon did for me but I take it for a psychotic disorder rather than a mood disorder but bipolar disorder can have psychotic symptoms and every medicine works differently for each person.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder since '95, but through a lot of research and getting completely sober I really feel that I actually have Borderline Personality Disorder with Severe Depression and Anxiety. I just got prescribed Lamictal because I've tried everything over the years and nothing works for long. I'm still on Topomax, Geodon, Prozac and Desyrel.

Is Geodon at a small dosage (20mg) safe for an individual with no history of health problems? My doctor put me on this and I think it is really helping, but after reading all of the scary side effects I am reluctant to continue. Thank you.

Which is worse bipolar one or two. And has anyone taken geodon. If so what side effects did you have.

Some of the one I am familiar with are Abilify, Geodon, Depakote, Lamictal, Lithium, Remeron, Aoloft, Prozac, and many many more. You may want to post and ask for a website link to get more info. I know one site www. NAMI.org is very good and has links. I think it boils down to good old fashion research. Usually it's a combination of 2 or 3 meds to treat the different symtoms of Bipolar. Most people are not on just one med.

ok so i have bipolar 1 disorder and i stopped taking abilify on my own because of my weight gain and my doctor said i have to take sumthing so he put me on geodon...i took it last nite and i woke up this morning light headed the i took the pill i was surpose to this morning and it made me feel worst like i was about to faint so i went to sleep and i slept for 6 hours and 30 minutes and im still sleepy so i mite have to go back to abilify...

hi, i was diagnosed with bi polar about 6 months ago and have gone to 3 other doctors and all have said i was misdiagnosed. the doctor who diagnosed me with BP also said he was wrong. so i have been diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression. i only get depressed when i am severly anxious. i constantly worry and dwell over one thought. i usually dwell until i get an answer! i have recently developed floaters, but have been told that is because of anxiety, they're annoying as heck!

Mood Disorder NOS(not otherwise specified) His dr put him on Geodon 40mg twice a day. He started this med on Tues. was discharged from hospital on Sat. He is still very depressed, anxious, having like panic attacks etc. Does anyone know if this is "normal" or what. I am trying to get his follow up with therapist moved up because it isn't until 3/31 and he doesn't see dr. until 4/6 I feel this is way too long to wait.

From my understanding I was diagnosed the worst form of bipolar and rapid cycling which is the hardest to treat .

Hello all. For a while I had the suspicion that I may be mildly bipolar. I spoke with my Pdoc a couple days ago--set down and went over all my symptoms/history with her. She said she just doesnt see any signs of bipolar and thinks im just unipolar depressive. However, she said I may be the treatment resistence type so prescribed me 25MG of lamictal to add to my 37.5mg of Effexor XR. I am supposed to take 12.5mg/day for one week then start on the full 25mg. I took the first 12.

m finding out probably depression and I probably mistook what depression is from bad descriptions to me and being apparently misdiagnosed with major depressive disorder earlier in life but I took them both for a psychotic disorder instead of a mood disorder. I don't know about Abilify but I know I read Geodon had the potential to send people into a state of mania. "Ziprasidone is known to cause activation into mania in some bipolar patients.

i have bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. i was just put back on geodon wednesday. i was on it once before, but only for about 3 days. i had to stop taking it bc my second son had jus been born and it made me so sleepy and it was so hard to wake me up. well when i went to the dr wednesday, she wanted to try it again. she said the first week being on it is bad, and if i can get through that first week things will prolly get better. does anyone know if that is true?

in cases of mild bipolar depression, is it normal for lows and highs to last only a few hours, rather than days or weeks? i have occasional week-long depression periods every once in awhile, but usually the hyper feeling or the depression will only last a few hours. is that normal in mild bipolar disorder? im a teenager if that makes a difference.

Right now, I am taking Lamictal 400mg per day (for bipolar 1). I still feel confused, sedated, and overall just bad. I feel like I have the flu almost. This has gone on for months and I can't seem to shake it. My pdoc did increase my Lamictal from 300mg to 400mg a few weeks ago when he took me off of Geodon, but I've never had any problems when increasing on it before. I just feel horrible and don't know if Lamictal could be the remaining reason or what.

I guess what scares me about it is that it will make me really sleepy, or that it will mess up the ways my medicines work now. I had a hard time accepting the fact I had to to Lithium, and now another medicine that scares me is prescribed. I know I can only hope for the best. I am at the moment in my acceptance of my Bipolar disorder that I want to say I don't have it, and I don't want to take the medication.

Geodon works great for some people and horribly for others, like any psych med on the planet. It is less likely to make you gain weight compared to others in the same class, and may be less sedating, but you'll really have no idea how it will work for you until you try it. I think it's also the least likely to cause metabolic problems out of the atypical antipsychotics, but any of them can potentially do that.

And I will add that schizoaffective disorder is schizophrenia with a mood disorder which in my case is bipolar. In schizoaffective disorder a person experiences psychosis all the time whereas in bipolar with psychotic features it is only during moodswings. You could ask your psychiatrist more about it and we have some websites linked up for information. One that's not linked up that you could find some clinically accurate information on in addition to Medhelp is Schizophrenia.

I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.

The key to lithium treatment is constant blood monitoring. I have my blood done every 4 months. As for liver damage, anything that you put in your body that is not a raw food, causes liver damage. Monitoring the dosage is critical to proper lithium treatment. I have been on 300mg in the a.m., and 600mg in the p.m. and my liver and thyroid are both fine. I also take (in treatment of bipolar mania) 60mg Geodon 2x's daily, 1mg Ativan 3X a day, and .25mg Xanax 3X daily (as needed).

my son is 19 takes 80 mg of geodon, he wants to join army..i am all for it, but he needs to get off the meds that he is on...I know how to wean off everything but geodon. I need help for that..any advise????

he was briefly put on meds for a few months the 1st time and this last time he was put on Geodon. Im confused, the psychiatrist that put him on the meds org said that he would probably need to take them for a year or 2...He went back to work and had to have a physical and that doctor said that people usually dont stay on geodon to long...but his after discharge psychiatrist made it sound like he was going to be on geodon forever..he has never had depression either..

I have bipolar,ptsd,severe panic disorder, and schizoaffective. Been on meds for years. Without Dr. A few months sop family Dr gave me Geodon,cymbalta and Xanax till I got new Dr. New Dr put me In hospital for 3 days and took away Xanax and added vistaril 25mg 3 times day,neurontin 300mg @ bedtime,trazodone 100mg @ bedtime and up dose to 90mg cymbalta. Getting worse so saw Dr. and up dose on trazodone and vistaril. Still not better up dose on Geodon.

Yes Geodon can be activating for some people. Topomax is generally used as a secondary mood stabilizer and is often of partial help and can cause mental changes. Lexapro and Wellbutrin are standard anti-depressents but anti-depressents alone wont treat bipolar and what is needed is a full mood stabilizer. Lamictal is generally helpful in this regard. However each person responds differently to each medication.
