Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax plus d side effects bone

fosamax

Avatar m tn My wife is a 65 year old in good health who has taken FOSAMAX for 5 1/2 years. She wants to get her teeth straightened. The periodontist has recommended a procedure to reinforce the gums prior to the braces. This has added an additional 6K to the price and about 3 months to the total time to straighten the teeth.
Avatar f tn I know that the liver processes all drugs and reading the side effects is scaring me. I have stage 2 fibrosis and failed the traditional interferon/ribavirin treatment already.
Avatar n tn Good morning, I saw my Dr. this morning and he would like to start taking fosamax, after reading all the side effects i'm not sure i should.
Avatar f tn I had Osteopenia several years ago and applied an estrogen patch once a week, took Fosamax once a week, and took Citracal Plus D 5 tabs a day. After several years (13 years) of treatment my bone density gradually went from pathological fracture stage back up to normal bone density. It was well worth the treatment in order to avoid hip fractures and vertebral compression fractures. About 2008 I stopped the Estrogen but continued on the Fosamax and Citracal Plus D.
Avatar f tn Hi spitfire...eek I did the same thing after fosamax. My former GP told me I had early bone loss (I cant remember the name she gave it) after a bone scan, then after seeinig my ENT about the issue he told me my esophagus was actually irritated from the med. And of course the "panic" when you feel as if you cant swallow only makes it worse. He looked at me as if I was nuts when I told him I was even on the fosamax, and recommended I stop it altogether.
Avatar f tn I saw a Professor of Endocrinology in Feb 2008, referred by my bc surgeon, as this guy has an academic interest in side effects of Arimidex. He suggested I continue with Arimidex and Fosamax to prevent further bone loss, but I cannot stand the pain and disturbance to my sleep. Does anyone have any experience of stopping Arimidex and getting a different med that does not have the side effect of bone pain?
7469840 tn?1409845836 He started me on a regimen of weekly Estrogen patch, weekly Fosamax, and Citracal Plus D. It took a few years, but I am now back up to normal bone density. I would not trust just any old Family Practive doctor or PCP. You want someone who specializes in Osteoporosis and who will tailor the treatment to you. Best of luck.
Avatar f tn hopeful I started taking Fosamax about a month before I began treating for hep C and did not seem to have any bad side effects. A bone density test done after tx showed slight improvement. If your doctor wants to you go on one of the bone density drugs, I think it is a good idea. Having osteopenia for that many years without it slipping to osteoporosis is a good sign that all your supplements were helping.
Avatar f tn I would, however, suspect the Fosamax. Can you try a different medication for osteoporosis? I rebuilt my bone by supplementing with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. High cholesterol is often caused by hypothyroidism, and once thyroid levels are normalized (for you), cholesterol levels often come down.
Avatar n tn My doctor is putting me on Actonel but I am reluctant to start. Side effects are very worrisome... not sure what to do. I have started mega doses of supplements and calcium and D and excercise and I want someone to tell me that that has worked for them. Most comments I get is to take the drug because it's more effective. I can't believe everyone is taking bisphosphonates or other drugs like that. Please let me hear from you if you see this!,,, Thanks, and hope you are doing well!
Avatar n tn What did your prescribing doctor say about the side effects caused by the Fosamax and how to deal with it? I understand your feelings about how the facial pain affects your quality of life. Because it's something people can't see -- it's sometimes hard for our families/friends to understand. It took me a long while to get my husband to understand what I was dealing with, with symptomatic TN.
Avatar n tn Assuming loose teeth refering to increased tooth mobility, which is associated with periodontal disease, occlusal trauma, or bone pathology. Fosamax is not likely to cause tooth mobility.
691935 tn?1421027090 The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of ribavirin on bone mineral metabolism in patients with chronic hepatitis C who had been treated with interferon and ribavirin. Methods: Twenty patients (3 female, 17 male) with chronic hepatitis C were enrolled. Age range was 6 to 15 years (mean ± SD, 11.15 ± 2.3 years). Thirteen patients received combined interferon alpha-2b and ribavirin therapy (Group 1), and 7 patients received only interferon alpha-2b (Group 2).
Avatar m tn 6 Use of strontium also significantly increased measured bone density. No significant side effects were seen. Benefits were also seen in an earlier, smaller study. A fourth study tested strontium ranelate for preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal who have not yet developed it. In this 2-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 160 women received either placebo or strontium ranelate at a dose of 125 mg, 500 mg, or 1 gram daily.
Avatar f tn I looked up the side effects of Protonix - wow!!! So many! It did include the joint pain but said nothing about hearing loss - however, it did say that the list of side effects was not complete! I am taking Ipriflavone and Calcium with Vitamin D3 for my bone health. The Dr. prescribed Fosamax, but after reading about how it can cause weak bones, (what it's supposed to help) I discovered Ipriflavone.
Avatar f tn Hello Emanuelle, I definitely feel for your concern. Although I am 36 I have pretty severe osteoporosis and at one time was recommended to take medication for it. I have several spinal injuries which have resulted in Degenerative Disk Disease, other joint syndromes and overall bone density loss. I had not personally heard of the the fractures (femur) from the Fosamax, but I did hear of the other risk factors for some of the older drugs.
Avatar f tn I was put on fosamax about a year ago for. In Oct 2011 my teeth started falling out. I always had good teeth until then. Just had 4 pulled. The day after I had a bad infection in the top of my mouth. Its been 3 wks mouth is just now getting better. My question is. Is fosamax the reason my teeth falling out.
Avatar m tn I worry about 2 things right now-- what if the bone tumor is something else and not fibrous dysplasia, and the bisphosphonates make it worse by causing a more heavy calcification? What about the side effects of such a drug on someone who is only 31 yrs old?
Avatar f tn I have been on Fosamax for # months but am worried about the side effects. Is there any calcium that works better than others? I have been on calcium and vitamin D supplements for years but went from osteopenia level to full-blown severe osteoporosis in a few years I would appreciate any advice since the medical field tells you nothing but to take medication and deal with the outcome!!
Avatar f tn I just went got into menopause. My FSH is at the high end, no periods for over a year etc. I had a bone density done and my spine and hips have low end osteoporosis. I was wondering how many of you out there at my age or near my age have it too? I had osteopenia of the spine 4 years ago and now it is osteoporosis. The hip has gotten worse on one side by 3% and the other side by 6 %.
Avatar n tn FosAMAX FOR YEARS last two years two unusual femer bone breaks CALCIUM + MAGNESIUM VITAMIN D FAITHFULLY....
Avatar f tn I do want to caution your use of the Fosamax though. New studies have shown issues with femur bone fractures (brittle bone) and esophagal problems. There are other ways to strengthen bones naturally without taking biphosphonates. I'd get your vitamin D & calcium levels checked too since an underactive thryoid can cause problems with metabolism/regeneration of bone (so can too much thryoid hormone!) That is what makes Hashis difficult to deal with due to the hyper/hypo rollercoaster.
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
