35 years of empty sella, hi prolactin, testosterone injections, osteopenia, broken ribs and recently hip - and now at age 67 two of my children ages 33 and 36 flunk Dexa scans and are prescribed fosamax, which they refuse to take until hyperparathyroid is ruled out. I get labs showing PTHs of 63/(15-65), 51 and 45, with ionized calciums of 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 on scale 4.5 - 5.6. Three endos and 2 GPs say it's all coincidental. Should we get treatment in Europe?
I had Osteopenia several years ago and applied an estrogen patch once a week, took Fosamax once a week, and took Citracal Plus D 5 tabs a day. After several years (13 years) of treatment my bone density gradually went from pathological fracture stage back up to normal bone density. It was well worth the treatment in order to avoid hip fractures and vertebral compression fractures.
About 2008 I stopped the Estrogen but continued on the Fosamax and Citracal Plus D.
I have IBS> I started to take fosamax once a week (for osteo). did so for 4 weeks. it seemed to bother my esophagus (bumping, reflux) so my doctor suggested actonel. i took one pill a week ago and since have had increasing sensation of a lump in my throat, and like I'm full of phlegm that I can't ever swallow down. I can eat so of course I am swallowing. I'm off all drug right now but throat/phlegm sensations feel settled in, especailly bad at night, and are anxiety provoking.
You're welcome. Also, you may want to get your vitamin D level checked as many with hypothyrodism find this to be too low.(Should be atleast 50 ) Do you take any suppliments? My daughter (almost 10) was born without her thyroid gland and she use to have severe constipation with blood in stool while on Synthroid, plus MANY other hypothyroid symptoms. She had issues with converting the t4 into t3.
It is possible that you could have increased bone pain with the addition of calcium plus Fosamax, because you could be feeling (what is known as) bone remodeling. This is the activity that is occurring as calcium is replaced on the bone.
About suitable therapy; it depends of course on your gender. I'll assume you are female, since you mention Evista. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, it is almost essential that you are taking Fosamax (alondronate).
Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
My wifes orthodontist recommended a consultation with a periodontist prior to him starting the procedure for braces. My wife is a 65 year old in good health who has taken FOSAMAX for 5 1/2 years. She wants to get her teeth straightened. The periodontist has recommended a procedure to reinforce the gums prior to the braces. This has added an additional 6K to the price and about 3 months to the total time to straighten the teeth.
I believe there is a link between prolonged use of fosamax and oseonecrosis of the mandible.
Who might I contact for positive confirmation?
t take estrogen due to having previous blood clots and I have 1000mg of calcium a day and vitamin D is at 60. That is very normal. My doctor is going to increase the vitamin D to 80, towards the higher end of the range. I can't take fosamax either because I took it before and it gave me bad muscle thigh pain. There was a period of about 8 years where I was sitting way too much due to back pain. So I am trying to start walking more.
I am a "heart patient" and have been taking Fosamax to improve bone density. Lately I have seen several things that implied I might not should be taking Fosamax. I would enjoy hearing some opinions on this matter.

MY FRIEND HAD TO HAVE INVASION DENTAL WORK, BUT WHEN THE DENTIST DISCOVERED THAT SHE WAS ON FOSAMAX AND HAD BEEN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, HE INSISTED THAT SHE TAKE A HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED BLOOD TEST. SHE HAD DIFFICULTY FINDING A LAB THAT WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE TEST AND ONE THAT PERFORMED THE TEST. THE RESULTS OF THE TEST INDICATED THAT HER JAW BONE WAS NOT SUFFICIENTLY STRONG[?
I have been on Fosamax for almost a year . In the last few months I have developed really bad heartburn. Zantac helps for a few hours but then it starts again.
m taking weekly generic Fosamax, daily 1200 calcium, daily 1400 D, and every other week 50,000 D. I hit menoapuse about 4 years ago. I have some pretty bad arthritis in my R hip, but my L is much more normal, though not totally normal. I walk briskly and climb stairs 5 days a week.
