Fosamax femur break

Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax femur break

Avatar m tn My wifes orthodontist recommended a consultation with a periodontist prior to him starting the procedure for braces. My wife is a 65 year old in good health who has taken FOSAMAX for 5 1/2 years. She wants to get her teeth straightened. The periodontist has recommended a procedure to reinforce the gums prior to the braces. This has added an additional 6K to the price and about 3 months to the total time to straighten the teeth.
Avatar f tn I do want to caution your use of the Fosamax though. New studies have shown issues with femur bone fractures (brittle bone) and esophagal problems. There are other ways to strengthen bones naturally without taking biphosphonates. I'd get your vitamin D & calcium levels checked too since an underactive thryoid can cause problems with metabolism/regeneration of bone (so can too much thryoid hormone!) That is what makes Hashis difficult to deal with due to the hyper/hypo rollercoaster.
Avatar n tn I have a rod and screws in my femur. In Osteology, I learned that I could have it removed but my bone would be fragile and hollow down the center. It would take many months for the bone to regenerate soild, and you would essentially be unable to put any weight on it, meaning your mother would be in a wheelchair or on crutches. With every year in age, bone regeneration slows, so it could be at least six months.
Avatar n tn Hello. 11 months ago I was in a car accident and broke my left femur in 2 places (on the top by my pelvis and in the middle). After my first surgery, they put a titanium rod through my femur and a plate connecting the top of my femur with my pelvis. After about 5 months, my doctor told me the top of my femur was fully healed but the middle had stopped healing and he needed to go in and replace the rod with a bigger one to stimulate bone growth.
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar f tn When I was 31 y.o. I had an accident that left me w/ a broken femur ... leading up to days later a “ titanium rod “ being inserted into the broken femur . The initial days , etc. obvious moments of pain happened , over the years since then w/ the break eventually being healed = very ..,... minimal pain . In getting older = 64 y.o. now within the past couple of years thereabouts pain is reaccuring more & more , causing pain also in my hips and other leg .
Avatar m tn I would appreciate any thoughts or feedback. I was involved in a near fatal automobile accident on 12/31/02. As a result, I required nearly 10 hours of surgery to repair two badly broken legs and L forearm. During my recovery, my L femur was the most painful of my broken bones. However, since it healed, it has been the injury that has never caused any further issues/pain. Well, that is up until about 6 months ago when my femur started aching.
Avatar f tn I believe there is a link between prolonged use of fosamax and oseonecrosis of the mandible. Who might I contact for positive confirmation?
Avatar n tn Can prolonged Fosamax use damage the throat lining and if so, what is the treatment?
Avatar m tn I have a quick question: I just broke my femur snowboarding new years eve 2012 (mid break femur snap with a few big pieces floating) and I can't bend my knee past 30 yet. I had my IM surgery (two screws in the hip, one above my knee) on jan 1st (yes New years) and I cant even sit in a chair yet. It's now the 3.5 weeks out and I cant bend my knee yet!
Avatar n tn I am a "heart patient" and have been taking Fosamax to improve bone density. Lately I have seen several things that implied I might not should be taking Fosamax. I would enjoy hearing some opinions on this matter. Thanks.
Avatar n tn MY FRIEND HAD TO HAVE INVASION DENTAL WORK, BUT WHEN THE DENTIST DISCOVERED THAT SHE WAS ON FOSAMAX AND HAD BEEN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, HE INSISTED THAT SHE TAKE A HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED BLOOD TEST. SHE HAD DIFFICULTY FINDING A LAB THAT WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE TEST AND ONE THAT PERFORMED THE TEST. THE RESULTS OF THE TEST INDICATED THAT HER JAW BONE WAS NOT SUFFICIENTLY STRONG[?
Avatar f tn I am a 65 year old woman with osteoarthritis (NOT osteoporosis--have good bone density) in knees and back--otherwise in very good health. I was in an auto accident on June 30, 2009, sitting in the back seat. My knee slammed into the back of the driver's seat. It broke my femur a few inches above my knee replacement, which was put in only 6 months previously. It was a very bad break with fragments and a considerable empty space at the break. Surgery involved placement of a plate and screws.
Avatar f tn Two weeks ago I had surgery on my left distal femur to remove a lesion that turned out to be an enchondroma from the lateral condyle.. I can bend my knee 1/3 of the way now, but it gets to a certain point where I cannot bend it past that point, and if I try, my whole leg shakes and it feels so tight like every one of my ligaments is about to snap and my bones will break (I know that's not the case, but thats how my knee feels). I had the lesion taken out and my femur filled with bone graft.
Avatar f tn Get x-rays of her femurs. Unfortunately the only way to correct it is to break the femur so it heals correctly. In the long run it will be worth it, and could save her a lot of pain down the road.
Avatar f tn I have been on Fosamax for almost a year . In the last few months I have developed really bad heartburn. Zantac helps for a few hours but then it starts again.
Avatar f tn Hi, I was in a car accident 3 months ago and had a clean break of the femur (mid-shaft). I had an IM nail inserted with a pin at the hip and two screws a the knee. Recent x-rays showed that the bone was not healing. My consultant seemed suprised as I am a young and healthy non-smoker. I have been partial weight bearing on crutches for the last 2 month and doing well in physio. They suggested that I have the bottom screw in my knee removed, which I am due to have done in 2 weeks.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know any adverse effect with Fosamax, a medication for treating osteoporois or brittle bones? My regular doc (who knows I have HCV) prescribed it to me. I know that the liver processes all drugs and reading the side effects is scaring me. I have stage 2 fibrosis and failed the traditional interferon/ribavirin treatment already.
Avatar f tn Im a professional motorcycle racer and since the initial break it has moved a further two times, now sitting next to the head of my femur. Could anybody give their advice?
