Common Questions and Answers about Fear of driving through mountains

fear

Avatar f tn I haven't always had a fear of snow or ice driving until the recent past few years. If I am not in the driver's seat, I can't control the anxiety. If I am in the driver's seat, it's much, much worse. My panic starts the minute we start moving.
Avatar n tn I know what you are going through! I have battled anxiety of driving on the interstate for about 4 years. It all started when I had my very first Panic Attack while driving alone on the interstate. I thought I was having a heart attack and was going to die alone at the age of 28 yrs old with a yound wife and a 6 month old daughter. It was terrifying! I am almost over the driving fear, but it has been a long a process. I have good days and bad days.
Avatar n tn Then after 2 months he went by train from Eastern PA to Chicago, again through mountains. Since he had no pain ,he is now going by train to Cleveland ( through mountains again) but at least he is now listening and not pushing the envelope and going by plane. He was going to defy the doctor again and go by plane. I appreciate the input. Thank you.
1074864 tn?1256932915 Hello and welcome to the forum! "I feel like I'm experiencing the onset of agoraphobia - I push myself to do things, even if I don't want to, so hopefully that works. " BINGO! What you are experiencing is a totally typical progression of occurences after the onset of panic attacks. Basically, what you are going through is a "fear of fear".
4451415 tn?1359271504 We live in CO an my husband once thought it would be fun to take a road trip through the mountains when I was around 34 weeks. It was fine, but peeing in the woods was an adventure!
1785438 tn?1314987935 Hi. Unfortunately this all evolves around your anxiety and you're developing Agoraphobia which will hold you prisoner in your home (safe place). Driving is a big trigger for many with panic attacks it goes along with Agoraphobia, fear of open places and fear you'll have a panic attack, the feeling of being "trapped" wherever you are.
9961264 tn?1410873329 And he wants to go back now. Ive just never driven through snow and im worried. But thats why im planning everything wayy ahead of time.
1804812 tn?1329677557 Boy, can I relate!! MANY of us can! This goes hand in hand with panic. " I am known as the "back roads" queen because I can get to just about anywhere on small streets and county roads. I always feel like I need to have a place I can pull over". Me too! LOL. I HATE highways. I explored this fear with my therapist years ago, and she explained to me that the fear stems from our basic fear of becoming "trapped" somewhere, with no option of "escape".
Avatar f tn New pathways need to be created to overcome the old programming. So for example, if you panic over a fear of flying, you must start flying and let the brain realise that its all okay, and reprogram the thoughts. However, the fear of dying can't really be practiced. Some buddhists meditate in a morgue as it is the closest we can get to dying. Once we understand that dying is just for the body and the spirit moves back to the energy (the light) we are no longer afraid of dying.
Avatar n tn I too struggle with panic attacks and the fear of them returning. Have you talked to your dr about this? You might want to consider talking with a therapist. I do know that if you let the fear take over your mind it is only going to get worse. The best advice I can give you is to talk to someone and try to face the fear. Get back in your car and go for a drive even if it is only around the block. Each time you do it it will get easier. You have to take your control back.
Avatar m tn You can even just browse through the OCD forum to get an idea of some of the advice that has been given to others with the same fears. It's not as simple as us telling you you would know if you were gay (which you would). Like any other kind of anxiety, you would accept that reassurance temporarily, but most likely, the fears will reemerge. This is why I think you should check out the OCD forum, there are suggestions you could benefit from that are specific to this exact issue.
584903 tn?1233831386 I wrote this in the other ablation thread that I have been in, but it makes more sense here. This is a great line of thought for me to hear about. A lot of fear has sort of taken over over the last couple years. Great for you... in the gym 5x/week. I essentially stopped mostly everything a year and half ago when ANYTHING I did was a trigger for me to go out of rhythm- mostly to a rate in the 200s. I hate that I feel fat, out of shape, and weaker than I ever have.
Avatar f tn Fear is a common symptom of anxiety and depression. Almost always one of the predominate ones. Our nervous systems are 'out of wack' and we feel unstable as a result. Few people really appreciate their nervous system and it's complexities. You should discuss this symptom with your doctor and see what he can do.

8377023 tn?1399509160 My biggest fear out of everything is my water breaking while driving their car. I am absolutely terrified that this is going to happen. I have already gotten contractions while driving with one of the twins, thankfully the contractions weren't crazy bad, and this happened today. I dont know what to do besides calling their aunt, Chris, my mom and my doctor. Like what should I tell their aunt if that happens? To just meet me at the hospital or what?
229538 tn?1300377767 As time marches on the fog of abuse and addiction is fading and driving in the mountains with my convertible top down and my Dr. Pepper is my new high ! I can stop and hike in that 6,000 foot air and really not have it bother me at all ! Its wonderful people . For all you reading this who are just starting your journey back to reality I can tell you it is WELL worth it ! Fight for your life and you will succeed ! Avatar f tn Hi I'm sorry you are going through this. I think the fear can be changed. I used to fear having a panic attack while driving. What helped me was to listen to my favorite music, even a favorite song until I got to work. I slowly realized that it was just a fear, wasn't a fact and was able to deal with it. I also hyperventilated so read that if you have ice water with you, drinking it of course, you can't hyperventilated. The Community Leader who is normally here is on vacation.

584903 tn?1233831386 Inspiring thread here. I was there once. I'm sure most of us were there, but the set backs of fear and anxiety of our hearts beating is so exhausting. When we feel we've achieved a better understanding or we've accomplished a goal, something else tends to happen, or we feel different sensations to send our minds whirling again in the opposite direction of where we want to go. As for myself, I have no idea where to go at this point.
Avatar f tn I have the same issue. A runny nose, congestion, and dry throat have been my most prominent and worst pregnancy syptoms, so maybe I shouldn't complain. But it's rough to sleep and its very gone through boxes of tissues. I love my tea, but I'm careful with it because of the caffeine. I recently got a Vick's humidifier which the pharmacist approved, I'm just now 6 weeks, and the humidifier is helping some.
Avatar n tn The worst part is definitely the fear that accompanies each episode. I have to force myself to breathe through it. When an episode strikes, it helps if I turn down the radio, roll down the windows, and remind myself that nothing has ever happened before, and that if I can keep my fear in control, I will be okay.
1348086 tn?1370783185 It started back in March, when I had to wean off of cymbalta. All of a sudden, I never have it driving to work, but at work I travel some, maybe 50-100 miles in a given week, plus it is about a 15 minute drive to work. Even when I go get my daughter from her mom, anxiety. When I drive to the mall about 30 minutes away, anxiety. It usually cripples me to the point that I have to take a 7.5 mg of clorazepate, and I hate taking them.
Avatar n tn Hi HamiltonM, I posted a comment about 6 years ago about fear of driving in curves. Especially curves ciming downhill. I feel my car will tilt over. I noted your comment about similar symptoms. I haven't been in this chat room since then...anyway I wanted to know if anything helped your situation?
303706 tn?1296876149 I do know that high altitude creates low oxygen levels. Since the baby receives oxygen through the placenta, it could have been the babies way of saying "get me down from here". Anytime you travel to high altitudes, you should call your Dr. first and it should be avoided especially if you are at high risk or within the last four weeks of pregnancy.
Avatar f tn m becoming housebound because of my fear of driving. I just got on my husbands insurance and am thinking of going to the doctor. Though, I'm afraid it's not anxiety and it will not be diagnosed easily. I just want this to be over. I want to be normal!
