I recently went to the annual meeting of the Northern California Inland Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) where I learned of Approximately 257 adults who were cured of Type 1 diabetes with the Edmonton Protocol in Canada. This protocol was pioneered by Dr. Shapiro and is the leading center for islet cell transplant. As of yet children are not candidates for the procedure and there are some kinks to be worked out before this can become a procedure for anyone.
I have had Diabetes for 39 years and I am looking forward to the day when they perfect the islet cell transplant. At this time, as far as I know, the procedure is only being done on people who have a very difficult time controlling their diabetes and it is interfering with their daily functioning. Transplant patients must take anti-rejection drugs and these can depress the immune system which can create other medical complications.
So far 257 people have been cured from diabetes with islet cell transplantation but some physicians feel that the side effects from the anti-rejection medications that one would need to take have worse side effects than the complications of diabetes. I had an Islet Cell Transplant in YR2005. I had Diabetes for 28 years and was suffering from Hypoglycemic unawareness and Hypoglycemic seizures. I had 2 transplants, I was in and out of the hospital in one day and back to work in 3 days. With my second transplant, I could have gone home the same day, but I did not have a ride home so I stayed overnight. The immune suppressant drugs are not so bad, have had no side effects and rarely get sick. Is it for everyone?
There is much talk about islet cell transplantation these days and while the procedure has worked beatifully for a good number of people it is far from being touted as the cure for diabetic patients. Immunologist Herman Waldmann, who pioneered this idea beginning in 1993, likened it to orchestrating a “cease-fire” in the body’s immune system.ii Clinical trials are still underway for this promising treatment for Type 1 diabetes.
i recently found out that my boyfriend is diabetic. he has been since he was 13. at 19, the doctors have told him that his body produces NO insulin. the estimate that unless he gets help soon he won't live past 25. i heard about islet cell transplantation and that it has a higher success rate when it comes from a live donor. does anyone know a way that he could possibly be considered for the treatment....even if it's experimental. i would even be willing to donate cells.
you can get pancreatits just from having one. Listen, check out having a total pancreatectomy islet cell transplant. ( tpict ) Its an amazing procedure that many people don't consider but trust me its worth it. I have cp and I am going to have it. My fiancee had hers removed and it a lot better now with hardly any pain at all. Its a big surgery but its way better than wasting time with stents and such.

I was at my endocrinologist last week and he gave me a phone number for the Shands Teaching Hospital (Gainsville FL) to find out if I was eligible for the islet cell transplantation. Anyway I never called. I think I threw out the number. Why didn't I call, I'm sure all the parents are wondering. Well, I'm not exactly sure but I think it's b/c I don't remember ever NOT being a diabetic so my identity is all tied up in it.......
m not sure if there are tests that can disprove their diagnosis. The GAD, islet cell and endomysial antibodies tests you have mentioned don't always indicate whether or not someone is diabetic. I have to say I don't know too much about it but, in the case of endomysial antibodies, for example, I believe their presence might signify Celiac disease, which is also associated with diabetics.
i am currently looking into a pancreas transplant alone i am currently 44 years old and am diabetic for 34 years i don't have
any real problems and am on a pump i just would like to have this transplant i'm searching for any information on such a transplant i'd especially like to speak to people that have had one both successful and rejections any information will be greatly appreciated
Other causes can be capsaicin containing meals,some drugs , carcinoid syndrome, systemic mast cell disease, pheochromocytoma, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, pancreatic islet-cell tumors, renal cell carcinoma, hyperthyroidism, neurological flushing and emotional flushing.
Keep a food diary for yourself and see if the hot flashes appear after eating certain foods.Also get your thyroid hormone levels evaluated.

Although it's relatively new, there have been many successful islet cell transplants. I'm appending an article about one case that worked out well. I've written the author to find out how Ms. Snapp is doing now.

A South Vienna woman is the first person to undergo an auto-islet cell transplant at the Ohio State University Medical Center.
I have MS and had a stem cell transplant with my own cells. It was an amazing experience that I would do again in a heart beat. I continue physical therapy 3 days a week and am beyond determined to beat this. I went from functioning at 5-10% to 80% and still improving.
In August I had a total pancreactectomy with auto islet transplant. This was the result of more than 2 years in constant pain with pancreatitis. I moved in with my parents before the surgery. They told me they had no idea how bad it was because I can due a fairly good job of hiding the pain and was able to keep my job (really due to FMLA). I had this 12 hour operation aware I was trading one set of problems for another.
