evista and fosamax together

Hi there I too was recommend to go on Evista. I am going to take it. i ave been on Fosamax for the last year. That was prescribed by my primary doctor. My oncologist recommended that I take the Evista, besides the helping of osteoporsis I have ADH (atypical ductal hyperplasia) and have a high risk of cancer.

I researched Evista online and found that it is linked to increased risk of ovarian cancer and stroke, in addition to other nasty symptoms I have never experienced (including hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia). I am afraid to take this drug, too, and don't know what to do. Has anyone else been in this situation?

I am no longer taking Evista, but while doing some research to see if I wanted to go back on it for my osteopenia, I found some references to a correlation between Evista and ovarian cancer and wondered if that could have had a bearing on my case. I have taken fosamax and actonel and have had stomach problems and aching bones. My doctor is thinking about the yearly injection of reclast. How safe is it and will I have more problems with my bones aching - I can't sleep at night a lot from the pain. t know that you should be taking evista and tamoxifen together , but the evista is definitely not a estrogen receptor. And who knows, maybe with them both it will help ward off further cancer problems. Just be careful because both can cause blood clots -- ask about taking lose dose (81 mg) aspirin or 1 mg warfarin to prevent the risk of clots. P.S. I am in the middle of treatment for another recurrence -- the evista didn't prevent an ovarian recurrence....

Food and Drug Administration raised concerns about the potential for some serious side effects in women taking bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates, specifically Fosamax, Actonel and Reclast. The published findings are not new.

Either estrogen replacement or Evista are good choices in prevention and progression of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Evista may also protect against uterine and breast cancer. If you don't have true osteoporosis, and you are headed in that direction (osteopenia), then estrogen (or Evista) therapy is more appropriate for prevention, than the addition of Fosamax. At the point of osteopenia, Fosamax may be used at reduced doses for prevention of the progression to osteoporosis.

Hi, Hair loss in a known but not highly common side effect of Evista. If you do a search: "Evista and hair loss" you will find numerous references to this side effect. This link: http://www.ehealthme.com/ds/evista/hair+loss indicates that as of Sep. 15, 2013, 17,635 people were reported to the FDA to have side effects when taking Evista. Among them, 259 people (1.47%) have Hair Loss. Time on Evista when these people had hair loss: < 1 month 4.35% 1 - 6 months 4.

Many thanks for your response and advice. I have been on both drugs together - Arimidex for 4 yrs, Fosamax for 3 yrs. I stopped the Arimidex 4 wks ago but have continued with weekly Fosamax. The bone pain in my hip and foot has diminished considerably, although I still have shooting pains in both thumbs and 1st 2 fingers. I am a little confused as to your advice......when you say "a possible brilliant solution is to take these drugs together WITH bone protective agents...

Tamoxifin can cause blood clots and uterine cancer. Evista is a little better in the side effects I believe, however everyone is different. I also have ADH(atypical ductal hyperplasia) and it increased my risk from 1.6 to 3.2 which is doubled, so I am considering the same thing. I am also having pathology reviewed by yet another lab to be sure it is not DCIS, which I am sure the other pathology report is no doubt correct. The best thing for you to do is to research. Then make your decision.

He said that I am at high risk for bc (despite breastfeeding and full-term pregnancies before age 30 and onset of menstruation at age 13 and menopause at 52 and healthy weight, etc.) and that going forward I should be tested every six months with MRI and mammogram, alternately. He also said an oncologist would later discuss prophylactic treatment with tamoxifen or evista (I have osteopenia, and he said evista can be beneficial for that). I am very frightened and anxious.

Fosamax has been linked in long-term users to the development of low-impact femoral fractures. In the event of a fracture fosamax may interfere with remodeling and healing. However, the decision to continue or quit would need to be taken by his treating doctor; keeping in view the initial condition for which it was advised and the risks Vs benefits. Hi, I'm ok, but I think about this every day since I found out. It bothers me more than I thought it would. I have no known family history, but my mother died at 60 from complications from uterine cancer. I am post menopausal. When I was 49 my husband died and my periods just stopped suddenly and I had only hot flashes. But they were often and I would get drenched at work. So I took Prempro. I never stopped taking it because every time I tried the flashes came back.

My mom is taking Fosamax [Alendronic Acid], she is taking it exactly as directed and is still getting terriible burning in her esophagus. She is really suffering. She says there are no alternative medications she can switch to. Are there any remedys she can take to help ease the burning in her esophagus? Supplements, Vitamins, anything like that? Any help anyone can give me would be greatle appreciated, as i Said, she is really suffering Thanks in Advance!

Bone pain is a side effect of the medications you mentioned but a bone spur is an entirely different matter and no doubt the cause of the pain. Regards ..

Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.

I stopped taking Fosamax before the extraction (I had taken it for less than 4 years) and am not going to take the drug again. Is there concern that I will have a complication because of the Fosamax? I had hoped for a bone graft and/or socket perservation...

He started me on a regimen of weekly Estrogen patch, weekly Fosamax, and Citracal Plus D. It took a few years, but I am now back up to normal bone density. I would not trust just any old Family Practive doctor or PCP. You want someone who specializes in Osteoporosis and who will tailor the treatment to you. Best of luck.

I know that the early hysterectomy has caused my bone issues(been on Fosamax and actually just started Reclast this week -2.7) but I wonder if it is effecting the breast? I went in for my annual mamo last week and have been called back yet again. New spot directly under the nipple, same breast. Sheduled US for next week. So two mamos and 2 call backs...I am nervous..is this common, should I be worried, is this what I have to look forward to every year...

35 years of empty sella, hi prolactin, testosterone injections, osteopenia, broken ribs and recently hip - and now at age 67 two of my children ages 33 and 36 flunk Dexa scans and are prescribed fosamax, which they refuse to take until hyperparathyroid is ruled out. I get labs showing PTHs of 63/(15-65), 51 and 45, with ionized calciums of 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 on scale 4.5 - 5.6. Three endos and 2 GPs say it's all coincidental. Should we get treatment in Europe?

Can prolonged Fosamax use damage the throat lining and if so, what is the treatment?

Just after breakfast seems so bizarre that I concentrate on that. Sometimes in the afternoon I am tired and I do rest so that is not terribly unusual.

I am a "heart patient" and have been taking Fosamax to improve bone density. Lately I have seen several things that implied I might not should be taking Fosamax. I would enjoy hearing some opinions on this matter. Thanks.
