Evista vs tamoxifen

Common Questions and Answers about Evista vs tamoxifen

evista

Avatar n tn Hi, I too take Evista for bone health.. Are you taking tamoxifen because of any past cancer ? I'm not sure that the answers you seek will be on this forum, unless you have or are recovering from Ovarian Cancer or perhaps think you may have it. I know your question is important and I hope you find the correct forum in order to be better served. Perhaps the Women's Health??. Most importantly, what does your Dr. say?
Avatar m tn Has anyone heard of taking Tamoxifen or Evista as a possible step in breast cancer prevention? My doctor has suggested it because I'm in a high risk category. I'm not sure what to do.
Avatar n tn He also said an oncologist would later discuss prophylactic treatment with tamoxifen or evista (I have osteopenia, and he said evista can be beneficial for that). I am very frightened and anxious. Seventeen years ago I had a benign lump removed in the other breast. Two years ago I had emergency surgery for a retinal detachment and have only just now come to terms with my altered vision the various complications from the detachment.
Avatar n tn My gyne oncologist has put me on Tamoxifen for giving me some protection. It appears that Tamoxifen has caused swelling of my feet which is hurting when I walk. Is there any other alternate to Tamoxifen? I am taking Evista and Actos for diabetes. Thanks for your advice.
340734 tn?1256586262 For those that knew I started Tamoxifen 8 weeks ago, it didn't work for me. Today at my doctor's appt, I was told my number (CA125) went from 72 (8 weeks ago) to 161. Still not a significant number, but I'll be starting Taxol weekly for the next 6 months. (Hopefully) this will put the disease in check for me. Only time will tell. Now, I will be putting that chemo tracker to use, but I've been told that weekly Taxol is not so bad.
Avatar f tn Could my recurrence of Ovarian cancer be attributed to my taking Evista for a year? I had ovarian cancer 15 years ago and after surgery and chemo, and a "second look" surgery with multiple biopsies was considered cured.I had a complete hysterectomy and the cancer seemed to be contained in my left ovary. Last winter I found a lump in my left groin which was biopsied and diagnosed as ovarian malignancy.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm ok, but I think about this every day since I found out. It bothers me more than I thought it would. I have no known family history, but my mother died at 60 from complications from uterine cancer. I am post menopausal. When I was 49 my husband died and my periods just stopped suddenly and I had only hot flashes. But they were often and I would get drenched at work. So I took Prempro. I never stopped taking it because every time I tried the flashes came back.
Avatar n tn Two lymph nodes were involved, I had a lumpectomy, lymph node dissection (l5), chemo, radiation, and tamoxifen followed by evista, which I currently take. My mother and her sister both had breast cancer (neither died from cancer). No one ever suggested I have anything but a yearly mammogram, always negative. I am most concerned about my daughter, who is scheduled for the MRI guided biopsy Feb. 20. I also wonder if I should be getting any tests other than the yearly mammogram.
Avatar n tn Hi. How old are you? Are you post-menopausal? Exemestane (Aromasin) and similar drugs called aromatase inhibitors, will only work with women who have already undergone menopause. If you're in the reproductive age group, Tamoxifen is still your primary option for hormonal treatment.
Avatar f tn in April. The last Dr. i saw recommended I try Tamoxifen. Reading other comments suggests that tamoxifen is for premenapause women so why did that dr. prescribe that for me? Since I am 74. Reading other comments suggests that arimedex leads to weight gain. that I do not want. My sister is 84 and when she was my age she took arimedex for 5 years. She can not remember anything aout it.I am already taking celebrex and tramidol for pain from arthritis. I had a knee replacement in '06.
Avatar f tn Perimenopausal breast cancer survivor on tamoxifen. After 4 months, diagnosed with AUB due to simple hyperplasia and polyps. Given a choice of hystrectomy or Ablation. Can't find any literature regarding ablation followup care since tamoxifen would be continued for 2-3 more years. What is the risk of endometrial carcinoma or other gyn issues after ablation since tamoxifen would still be providing an estrongenic effect?
Avatar n tn Hi, Hair loss in a known but not highly common side effect of Evista. If you do a search: "Evista and hair loss" you will find numerous references to this side effect. This link: http://www.ehealthme.com/ds/evista/hair+loss indicates that as of Sep. 15, 2013, 17,635 people were reported to the FDA to have side effects when taking Evista. Among them, 259 people (1.47%) have Hair Loss. Time on Evista when these people had hair loss: < 1 month 4.35% 1 - 6 months 4.
Avatar n tn Mum was diagnosed March 2005 OVCA stage 3, reoccurance 2007 and 2008, each time treated with carbo and taxol. Currently in remission. Dr put her on femera and tamoxifen but since being on tamoxifen she has had 2 DVTs in her right leg. Dr today stopped them and put her on warfrine (sorry about the spelling). Dr thinks she might have to be on this for the rest of her life. Dr also said she expects mums cancer to come back at some point but her cancer is very slow growing.
Avatar m tn There are some medications that are used to treat breast cancer that can be tried, though they would be used off label. These include tamoxifen (Soltamox) and raloxifene (Evista), here in the U.S. Another is Danazol. I don't know if they would be available in your country or not. Some of these drugs are quite potent and may have unwanted side effects. Be sure to discuss all of that with your doctor prior to taking them. The other option is the surgery.
Avatar f tn It does act as an anti-estrogen but also acts like estrogen in that it prevents the bone loss that other drugs like Tamoxifen may cause. It actually has the same side effects as Tamoxifen but not every person will experience all of these side effects or to the same degree. I'm not sure what you mean by "it made me ill" ... you may have the same side effects with the other drug but it's worth a try. Regards ....
Avatar f tn Hi, I can't seem to find stats anywhere on the Web for Stage I Breast Cancer, if you've had BCS but no radiation. Even stats for Tamoxifen,eg, all seem to assume you've had radiation. I had a lumpectomy; lymph nodes are clear, the tumour is only 1.1 cm, invasive tubular, as well as DCIS and one focal point of LCIS.
Avatar f tn he said I am cancer free right now, but a high risk of getting breast cancer so he is recommending this medication Evista. He said Evista was better then the tomoxafin because it causes less blood clots. Is this true? I haven't started any meds yet, since IM going to get a second opinon first to see what is the best course of medication for me to take.Of course there are side effects now what medication doesn't have any side effects right.
Avatar n tn Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.
Avatar n tn Herceptin and Tamoxifen are different drugs with entirely different actions. One does not replace the other in treatment. Tamoxifen blocks Estrogen and Herceptin deals with the over production of a protein. They are often given together. As the previous poster stated; if your tumor was Her2 positive you should definitely follow the Herceptin recommendation. Regards ...
Avatar f tn I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, ER/PR negative and, because of extremely dense breasts, chose to have a bilateral mastectomy. I'm glad I did, because a 5mm invasive tumor was found. The tumor was Grade 1, ER/PR postive, Her-2 negative. My oncologist recommended doing nothing or, if I wanted to have some treatment, receommended tamoxifen. I've heard that Tamoxifen doesn't kill microscopic cancer cells elsewhere in the body but only inhibits their growth...
Avatar f tn I took Effexor for a year and a half after starting Tamoxifen. It was a horrible drug to get on and even bigger bugger to get off. HOWEVER, it helped with the mood swings. Cannot say it did much for the flashing... a major side effect is SWEATING. So instead of flashing, it was a constant heat. I've been off for about a year, the hot flashes have subsided to rare occassions. One bad side-effect of Effexor is "lack of emotion".
Avatar f tn Just to add to what Lauren said regarding tamoxifen vs. other AI's, they do work differently in the body. Tamoxifen works by blocking the body's use of estrogen, whereas AI's reduce the amount of estrogen present in the body. In studies of breast cancer patients, AI's have proven to work better than tamoxifen in preventing recurrence, and there are far fewer serious side effects with AI's than with tamoxifen, too. Tamoxifen can cause blood clots, and stroke..
Avatar f tn I have tried Arimidex, Tamoxifen, and Femera with no luck. Now the dr would like to do a total hysterectomy. I am 45 and stopped having periods 3 years ago. Is this beneficial or not?
