truvada is just tenofovir+ftc, it is sueless on hbv unless non response to tenofovir, which is extremely rare
it adds toxicity and higher price because truvada patent is not expiring in 2014, no difference on hbsag.
instead of truvada it is best only for those non responding to combo tenofovir+lamivudine.
the second component is unchanged, 200mg of emtricitabine, also called FTC, a fluor substituted form of Lamivudine, that provides protection from the development of mutants that will lower the responsiveness to tenofovir.
it's side effects are generally considered very mild, equivalent to lamivudine.
This is theoretically good news for hbv patients waiting eagerly for TAF to be available for HBV.
The problem is the high price: 1500$ for one month supply of 30 pills.

Objectives
To report a successful treatment of a patient with a chronic severe hepatitis Delta using combination therapy with Pegylated interferon (PegIFN), Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and Emtricitabine (FTC).
Study Design
The patient, a 47 years -old male patient, originating from Dagestan (East Asia), suffered of chronic hepatitis Delta infection. The patient was HBsAg, HBeAg, and anti-Delta Ab (IgG) positive. Serum HBV-DNA level was elevated (more than 9logUI/mL).
At the day he died, the FDA had approved Truvada, a combo of tenofovir and emtricitabine (FTC) (300/200mg) for use as a preventative in healthy individuals exposed to risk of infection. This is at least some indication, that the toxicity analysis that the FDA had conducted has at least not shown a strong toxicity signal assoociated with its use. The trial has shown a 96% reduction in infection events compared to placebo.
if you have financial issues check posts on this forum about generics, you can switch to tenvir which is tdf or tenvir em or similar name which is tdf+ftc, both are more potent than entecavir, entecavir generic is not available but since the other drugs are more potent there is no need for it

Being a nervous mess since my possible exposure and feeling what I've read to be symptoms, I took the Home Access test at 7,11,14, and 19 weeks. These tests all came back negative. The consoleur and posting questions here, assured me that my tests were pretty much conclusive and my symptoms mean nothing. Anyways, I called the CDC to get some info on home access testing and they told me that the FTC has issued a warning about "home testing".
I was also a reciever. After 40 hours I went to the first clinic and they gave me PEP (TenofovirDF, emtricitabine + lamivudine). The clinic looks very unprofessional, but it was my only chance. I didn't do any hiv or std test, a month before the exposure i had HIV test which was negative. Somewhat higher expectations of effectiveness/ resistance preventive power can be placed in the use of the FTC/TDF combo a drug already in use for HIV under the name Truvada.
FTC is very similar to LAM, just has an extra Fluor atom on the ring. There was an HBV trial in Honkong a while ago where the combo FTC/ADF was vastly superior to ADF alone, showing almost synergism in Vl reduction, this has been reported at the AASLD.
attention entecavir works only in naive patients and even in naive patients it has 1,2% resistance, truvada is tenofovir+ftc (ftc similar drug to lam) in combo to prevent resistance and of coruse it has zero resistance until now
entecavir is also less potent than tenofovir, tenofovir is the only drug with zero resistance until now, all other drugs have resistance mutations
entecavir mght be used in case of adefovir resistance or even better a combo of tenofovir and entecavir
sorry for got to say truvada is used on hiv-hbv coinfection at the moment from many years, it is still on trial for hbv monoinfection but the combo of tdf+ftc (truvada) has been found to have very potent synergysm plus ftc is very active in lowering cccdna which correlates to hbsag.

if there is no decline of hbsag under etv or tdf over the years a combo with LAM or FTC might be a good choice because they are active even if very little decreasing hbsag/cccdna over time and combo with etv or tdf will prevent any development of resistance
This is a potential concern because the drugs in Truvada – tenofovir and emtricitabine – are active against HBV as well as HIV.
HIV and HBV are spread through some common transmission routes, including sexual transmission, vertical transmission (mother to child) and via multi-person use of injection equipment.
