You are correct that Truvada is a combination of tenofovir and emtricitabine, and is generally prescribed for patients with HIV. Being a HBV forum, most of us know very little about Truvada except that it is prescribed off-label for HBV by some doctors, and that it is recommended for HBV patients who develop resistance to Tenofovir.

This is a potential concern because the drugs in Truvada – tenofovir and emtricitabine – are active against HBV as well as HIV. HIV and HBV are spread through some common transmission routes, including sexual transmission, vertical transmission (mother to child) and via multi-person use of injection equipment.

Truvada is 100% effective as PrEP, or nearly so, as long as it is taken properly and there are good amounts of drug in the system at the time of exposure. Truvada is the main medicine that has been studied and recommended for PrEP. It is a combination of two drugs, tenofovir and emtricitabine. Maybe some things you read used these names, so you didn't see the Truvada brand name. I don't know if taking PPI drugs interferes with effectiveness against PrEP.

I then went to my family doctor and she was going to prescribe truvada plus tiviacy but she changed her mind and said the tiviacy is too toxic. So she put my on truvada alone will this even reduce my risk? I cant find anything online if it is effective or not.

truvada is just tenofovir+ftc, it is sueless on hbv unless non response to tenofovir, which is extremely rare it adds toxicity and higher price because truvada patent is not expiring in 2014, no difference on hbsag. instead of truvada it is best only for those non responding to combo tenofovir+lamivudine.

Brief Intro: have been on Truvada for more than 3 years now, switching from LAM (lam resistance, I took lam for 3 years). HBeAg +, AntiHBe - , 25 years old, genotype B. Ultrasound, fibroscan (around 5.0 kPa) & blood test (AST, ALT, Creatinin,... HBV DNA undetectable) every 6 months comes back normal (been doing this for 5 years now). I'm thinking about taking Tenofovir only because I will move to a place where Emtricitabine is not available. I know it is better to combo.

tenvir is generic version of tenofovir tenvir tm is generic version of tenofovir+emtricitabine (truvada) which even more potent than tenofovir alone entecavir is less potent of both tdf or truvada, i am also on entecavir which is about 1000usd per month changing currency from euro, i have it free in my country but it is absurd to allow such costs for a stupid tablet http://www.aids-drugs-online.com/productindex.

Thanks for your reply. Do you think therefore that I shouldn't worry about this incident? Obviously I wanted to something right away if it was risky and I have two more days to begin the PEP treatment if it will be a good option for me. 6 weeks is a long time to wait!

m unsure how HIV Screen 4th Generation results from blood drawn 60 hours post exposure will change my treatment. If positive maybe I will be told to continue Truvada and drop Tivicay (i.e. cease PEP and start HIV treatment.) I'm still unsure I should be risking side effects for a 0.4% probability I'd get HIV even if my partner was infected. Anyway - one day at a time! Another question I had, my combo of drugs is Truvada (emtricitabine 200mg/tenofovir 300mg) and Isentress (400mg), and I was reading that this was recently seen as a new alternative to PEP, which now has me a bit nervous...will this be decently effective? I have been experiencing severe itching and redness in my face after the daily dose of Truvada, which I tried to take Zyrtec for, which helped a little, albeit not much. Hi Thanks for all the help provided by the blog. I started PEP after a relatively risky exposure. However, I started Turvada 42 hours after exposure. I've read that Truvada has a limited effectiveness after 24 hours. Is this accurate? I also missed a dose on day 10 and from day 16 got general lymphadenopathy, headaches and other ARS-like symptoms. Can anyone help?

and im sure theres lots of people taking truvada who would want to know. and i wasnt asking if truvada helps with corona virus. i was asking if it inhibits your ability to fight it off.
