The answer is complicated. The reason for giving these medications sequentially, is that they have different effects. By giving one med before the other the optimal medicinal performance is obtained with a minimum of medication. There is a difference of opinion regarding this issue. My brain is foggy, but that is how it was explained to me a long time ago by a very knowledgable R.N. Ocassionally there are side effects, and mixing the drugs does not hold well for figuring out the problem.
I currently take advair and Spiriva medication.. is this the one and only mediacation,since there are no genericand here in the united states unlike the rest of the world which has a free market, we are controlled by the drug industry.
Those two medications are used for different things and therefore are taken at different times.
Ventolin: rescue medication if you are having problems breathing. You take the prescribed dosage and it should ease your breathing (if it doesn't or you have to use it more than 3 times a week - not including before exercise - you need a doctor check up)
Flovent: a controlling, day to day medication. This one helps reduce the overall inflammation to control the asthma.
I now use only natural anti-inflammatories and am more symptom free than I was using those poisons. The only medication I take is an Duoneb (albuterol/ipratropium) in a nebulizer. I have fairly severe COPD.
The best remedy I have found for chronic bronchitis are large doses of vitamin B5. B5 is a mucus thinner and an anti-inflammatory. There are no side effects. I take other stuff as well and have just added some Chinese herbs (under doctor's advice).
I stopped Advair because of serious choking that threatened my life. I have moderate COPD and am doing well on Duoneb (an nebulizing combination that contains albuterol) and an antihistamine. As for anything else I depend on natural supplements - vitamin B5, mullein extract, and MSM. I breathe more easily now than I have in two years. (Also Advair resulted in adrenal fatigue which I am now recovering from.
It is a constant problem even just using the Duoneb, and especially if I have to take any antibiotics. I'm, constantly having to take Fluconazole tablets after a round of antibiotics for candidiasis under my breasts and in my mouth. I always rinse my mouth after any inhalers or the spriva handihaler either with water or mouthwash. Usually both. I also use Clotrimazole 10 mg troche up to 5 times daily for the thrush in my mouth.
I've been taking this medication since the beginning of my pregnancy for nausea. I can't function without it or I'll be throwing up constantly all day. Some days are better than others. I've been seeing articles and my husband said he saw the zofran bad drug commercial. It says it's been causes cleft lips and pallets, and some heart problems. I don't mean to scare anyone. I don't think my doctor would prescribe me anything that would hurt my baby.
I was also given a three day regiment of azithromicin (zythromax) and Tussionex to control the cough. I was also given a DuoNeb. None of which seemed to work. After checking in with my primary care, i was given a flovent inhaler, to no avail. Following that, i was put on 80mg of prednisone, down to 60, then weaned off.
I use Duoneb and Mucomyst in a nebulizer. Additionall I use natural antiinflammatories and an anti-histamine. I do not use any inhaled steroids as they caused bronchitis and sticky phlegm. They also caused adrenal fatigue and, after using that poison for eight years, I suffered a broken hip. Steroids cause osteoporosis, cataracts, and wreck your immune system. I am thinking of adding Spiriva inasmuch as Mucomyst has solved the mucus problem.
The only prescription medication I use now is Duoneb (albuterol and ipratropium) in a nebulizer. I use about two ampules a day. I do not use a rescue inhaler. Instead I have a small, portable nebulizer. It is so small that it fits into my purse. The advantage is that I can take as little as I need, sometimes just a few puffs. It is made by Omron and costs about $200. It is worth every cent.
She took singulair and flovent inhaler and walked 3 miles a day. Two years ago she needed to use Duoneb via nebulizer. She was not short of breath at any time but had a few bouts with chronic bronchitis. Since moving to Florida a year ago, her husband died in Dec of 2007 and she is now short of breath. Her pulmonologist in FL took her off all of lung medications and within 3 days she was wheezing like a maniac.
Also, because of the albuterol and Duoneb that you might be using with an inhaler or nebulizer, this causes thrush, a fungal ailment, that starts in the mouth but can extend to the sinuses and lungs. Stay away from sugar, bread, and carbohydrates in general. These are foods for fungus that causes mucus.
What had been serious bronchitis abated. I continued to use DuoNeb and Zyrtec. But the real improvement was when a respiratory therapist suggested I take nebulized Mucomyst (acetylcisteine). I have not coughed one single time since I started using it and my FEV1 has improved 20 per cent.
Doctors routinely prescribe steroids with little thought to the problems they cause. In my case, in addition to congested lungs, they caused havoc with my adrenal glands.
I accept this diagnosis and I am seeking treatment to quit smoking—I started taking wellbutrin to help me with it and now I am just waiting for the medication to get into my system, before I try and stop. I have my quit date set and a plan in place to facilitate my success.
My question has to do with how young I have been diagnosed. I am only 30 years old. I had a diagnosis of emphysema at 29—by 30 COPD. I am not a super heavy smoker and I did not start exceptionally young.
i am already on several medications for my asthma
( symbicort 160, singulair, duoneb 2x daily as a maintanance ,and still need my maxair daily. i have been on 6 prednisone tapers so far this year and have been doing allergy shot for 1.5 yrs with next to no improvement in my asthma. my question is, i know all the good , bad and ugly about prednisone but i HAVE TO be able to live my life!!! does anyone know of any alternatives that i might discuss with my doctor.
Another contributing factor to the warning is that many people try to use combination meds like Advair as a rescue medication. The LABA takes far too long to take effect to use for that purpose. You need a fast acting rescue inhaler.

I was also put on prednisone again because of how well it worked with the pneumonia and was having very bad breathing troubles, and was also prescribed duoneb, a nebulizer solution that I guess is a combination of incruse and albuterol. She also switched me to breo and incruse, rather than the advair. I am now around 265 lbs.
Over the past weeks I've worked my way down to being on 5mg of the prednisone a day, almost done with it.
I do not take prednisone or inhaled steroids as I found they affected my health very badly. I do use Duoneb and natural anti-inflammatories. I have not found any benefit from Spiriva or Singulair. The progress of my illness is slow and my pulmonologist refuses to speculate on my life expectancy. He says there is great varieability.
I have taken allergy drugs, zertac and singular, Amoxicillian, nose rinses for sinuses, asthamex, proair, use of nebulizer and duoneb med's, and med's for cystic fibrosis, and nothing works. The Amox worked for a very short while than stopped working. I'm beside myself b/c I can't live like this. I wake up in the morning most times totally congested getting almost no air in my nose, and my throat with a big pocket of phlegm.
Ask your doctor before taking ANY medication.
