Avatar m tn I'm currently taking Doxycycline for anti-malaria reasons. I was wondering if it's unsafe to take for 5 consecutive months?
Avatar m tn The mainstay of treatment of hives is antihistamine like Benadryl which may be necessary for prolonged periods (in excess of 6 weeks). Short courses of oral cortisone or steroids are taken for short periods (one to three days) to settle more severe symptoms. You may take Vitamin C along with the prescribed treatment. Vitamin C is a general anti-allergy supplement. It helps stabilize mast cells so they are less likely to release histamine.

Avatar m tn I am visiting Laos/Thailand in Jan 2011 and I have been advised to take anti-malaria tablets while there called Doxycycline. Does anyone know if there is any interaction between these two drugs? Can it make one or the other not work as effectively? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Well, hey! Good to hear from you. My LLMD treated the babesiosis first, and the mepron/zith did the trick. I was way better just getting rid of the babs. I haven't heard or read much of anything about lariam (aka Mefloquine) ... but I just looked it up on wikipedia (however trustworthy that is or isn't), and found some interesting stuff: "Mefloquine is used to prevent malaria (malaria prophylaxis) and also in the treatment of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. ...
Avatar n tn what i meant those with malaria should use artesunate instead of chlorquine or a mix of the two drugs so they may attack both malaria and hbsag.
Avatar n tn Doxycycline 100 mgm by mouth twice/day for 6 weeks and then once/day for 3-6 months is a common treatment of blepharitis and meibomian gland disease. It is not so much antibacterial as antiinflammatory and gets into the oild gland. That's the reason its also used for acne. There is a new product that is specific for blepharitis but I don't have the details or brand name. None of these cause floaters.
Avatar f tn t always come with co-infections - and even when Lyme does come with co-infections some of them can be killed off with the doxycycline treatment. I've also read that Babesia can sometimes have mild symptoms but in some cases over a month or two your body can kill it off without extra treatment. If you have tested positive for a co-infection however - I would definitely pursue treatment.
Avatar m tn b) Is it most likely that the most recent partner of 4 weeks ago is the most likely source of the infection? If not, then I would have the infection for at least 18 months - 2 years without symptoms and is this likely? Any help would be great. I have learnt my lesson.

I have now been taking it for 11 days, even if I had caught Chlamydia or Gonorrhea would the drug have cleared it up by now. I have had no symptoms. also would this have cleared up any syphilis infection that I may have picked up.

Avatar m tn Trichomonas in men usually is entirely asymtpomatic. It is an unlikely cause of symptoms that come and go for months -- but that's unusual with NGU of any kind. I cannot say trich isn't responsible for your problem, but it is unlikely. Although hard to diagnose in men, it's pretty easy in women; if that were the problem it probably would have been picked up in your partner. Nevertheless, if you're being treated for possible trich, your partner should also be treated for it.

Avatar f tn After a few days the redness spread to the penis and now the tip of my penis (penile ring) is red and sensitive. There is not discharge from my penis, although there is a very slight burning sensation while urinating. I have started applying anti-fungal and the itching seems to have subsided. Can you tell me what this is and what you think was the cause?
Avatar m tn I was in a malaria-prone country two weeks ago when I feel ill. Given my many mosquito bites, I self-diagnosed myself as having malaria. I did not have flu-symptoms per se (as I have had the flu before and I did not feel the same), but I would feel very hot one moment, and then cold the next. I did not have painful urination. I attributed my swollen nodes to the frequency of sex i was having in the days leading up to my illness.
Avatar f tn 2%) had a positive TOC following treatment with stat azithromycin. The risk of re-infection was excluded in two, identifying nine of the 11 (81.8%) as treatment failures. Two patients had a positive TOC following treatment with 1 week of doxycycline, both were found to have a risk of re-infection. There was a significantly higher treatment failure rate in patients receiving azithromycin (p=0.0025). The site claims that a regimen of one week of doxycycline has a success rate of 98.8%.
