My otherwise healthy 86 yo. mom was diagnised with Atrial Fibrillation and was admitted to the hospital for seven days. She is otherwise very healthy and was only on Hyzaar for blood pressure prior.
She was told her heart was strong and showed minimal damage, chest Xray proved negative, stress test was passed with exceptional results, but was kept hospitalized until her heart rate stopped spiking. She is now on 5.0 mill.
Although I said not to tolerate Verapamil, a doctor gave me another calcium blocker, Diltiazem, when I had atrial fibrillation. When I came home, I had to decrease the daily dose to half and then stop using it totally. Diltiazem made me weak (possibly low BP or pulse) and the rhythm became very variable. Doctors should be careful when prescribing calcium channel blockers.
By the way, my pulse pressure (in sinus rhythm) can vary between 14 and 130. What does this mean? Is this normal?
OK then, atrial fibrillation does need to be controlled. Because of the upper chambers quivering, there's the chance of clots forming. Are you on any blood thinners as well? From your last line it sounds like a-fib has not been diagnosed yet.
As to what causes it, I'm not sure. Some folks get it as they get older. Some people have ablations to correct one problem only to have a-fib rear its head. Not sure if the ablation actually causes it or just uncovers it.
Happy to hear that the ablation worked for you. Do you know what the SVT was? (e.g., Atrial Flutter, Atrial Fibrillation, single focus atrial tachycardia?
Speaking of HR, what is the reason that you see an electrophysiologist? Atrial fibrillation? and are you feeling poorly when your heart rate is 40s?
I would say that if your HR needed to be a little faster than 40s, then adjust metoprolol or diltiazem as your had done, but then increase the enalapril and/or telmisartan to treat the blood pressure.
Flecainide and Dilt are a common combination for management of symptomatic atrial fibrillation in patients with normal healthy hearts. It's an effective regimen that you will have to stay on. There is no way to cure atrial fibrillation with medications, however, there is an ablation procedure which is indicated in those who can't tolerate medications. There is about a 75% chance of curing atrial fibrillation with this procedure. You have to stay on the ASA for life.
Hi ! I have been taking Flecainide 100mg twice daily for 9 years for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation. Since taking it I have noticed a small amount of hair loss each time I wash my hair but I still have my hair - it hasn't thinned or anything. I am 28 years old and otherwise a healthy individual. Last April I woke up one day with what I believe to have been atrial fibrillation, but by the time the EMT's arrived, I had converted. I am one year older than you, so I do not stand a a proof of living into 80 years, but I can say I have suffered from atrial fibrillation and other heart problems for about 15 years and following my medical advice has helped sustain my life that long.
It may also be causing atrial fibrillation later, so if there is a cause (like high blood pressure, overweight, sleep apnea, pulmonary diseases, etc), you must get it treated by your doctor.
Is your blood pressure normal when you don't have the tachycardia?
As far as I know, treatment is: 1) To treat the underlying condition, if it exists, and 2) if this will not stop the tachycardia from happening, the spot causing the tachycardia may be ablated.
I have been in atrial fibrillation for about a year .I have been asking to come off these pills for that long and the doctors ignore my wishes.
Now I am in the UK and I tell a two different pharmacies my problem. I think metropolol and diltiazem should not be combined they are contraindicated and make me feel awful. I had no afib symptoms before these pills. They make me feel worse than I ever felt in my life.

Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation two years ago by Triple XXX machine. Take amidiarone for arrythmia - take half the recommended dose to avoid some side effects, ie., lower pulse rate.
rarely have Arrythmia now. Take one Cozaar 50mgs daily. BP recently about 165/85. Pulse rate 37 this morning prior to medication. Usually Pulse is 39/42. Has been for years.
Athlete when young may explain low pulse to some extent.
i am 24 and am now on diltiazem lowest dose. i am very symptomatic to meds. i was on metoprolol and i had bad asthma with it. so recently i was switched. well i am a nursing student ready to graduate and am pretty fond of the heart and conduction, so i am affraid of things like clot formations and the fact that the medicine isnt stopping the flutters. if i up my dose i get very dizzy and feel like i have motion sickness like the floor is moving from under me. its really odd, anywho...

Episodes of atrial fibrillation can come and go, or you may have chronic atrial fibrillation. On the original question of taking 100 mcg of Synthroid one day and 88mcg the next - yes, people do it, but personally I take a very dim view of doing that. If we assume for a moment that your ideal dose is actually 94 mcg, then that means you are taking too much one day and not enough the next. The way the body reacts to process too much is not the same as for too little - so you have to assume that your body can shift gears quickly every 24 hours to handle this situation.
I was on tiazac 360mg for a couple of years for high blood pressure.I started having palpitations, skipped beats. The longer I was on it the worse it got. It finally got to where I was having some beats so strong and violent.I told my cardiologist and asked to change medication or a lower dose.He told me to go back to my family doctor who prescribed it originally. As it was 6 weeks to see him, I decided to stop the tiazac. After a few days the symptoms went away.

i have been on subutex for few weeks now at 4mg and i have been getting Atrial fibrillation , and now i have to take asprin and a beta blocker .33yr old male

I agree completely with the other folks. I've had 3 ablations. It zapped out my atrial flutter the first time but my atrial tachy (PSVT) kept coming back. However, they were able to improve it by miles. I still have mini-tachy times (less than a minute) and for the most part they stay around 150-160 with only occasional bursts to 198. Also have PVC's and PAC's but compared to the tachy times I used to have, I'd say I feel pretty good.
I have suffered with taking diltiazem(180 mg ER) AND metoprolol (50 mg ER) for atril fibrillation for the past two and a half years. The side effects have been debilitating.. Both drugs have the same side effects and together and one or the other or both create what I can only describe as chaotic turbulence in my chest and pain in my left arm when the second drug kicks in.. My cardiolgist now wants me to add a blood thinner (xarelto) to my meds menu.
Hi, I'm a 33 year old male, not overweight, not diabetic, I've been dealing with tachycardia for some time now. It comes and goes. I found that 50mg of Metoprolol twice a day would mostly control it, but as a 33 year old man, I began to notice major erection issues since being on it. Talked to my doctor, they want me to start 120mg a day of Diltiazem. I'm a little nervous about it, but they assured me it's no more potent a medication.
