Desmopressin in enuresis

Common Questions and Answers about Desmopressin in enuresis

Avatar n tn I have seen urologists, done physical therapy, taken desmopressin, set alarms to wake up in the night, cut back my liquid intake in the evenings, had my bladder checked for abnormalities (there are none), used moisture-sensitive alarms, and attempted to train myself to make sure that I am fully awake when I get up in the night to urinate. Sadly, none of these solutions have worked. People say that bedwetting is a problem that people grow out of, but I am starting to believe that I never will.
Avatar m tn There is a drug called Desmopressin (DDAVP) it reduces urine production at night. But drinking too much liquid with the medication can cause problems, and Desmopressin should be avoided if you have symptoms such as a fever, diarrhea or nausea. Be sure to carefully follow instructions for using this drug. Desmopressin is given orally as a tablet and is only for patients over 5 years old.

In your case ,you have been repeatedly diagnosed with UTI but your scans came out normal. Now, your physician needs to establish that the enuresis is not actually due to the underlying infections but may in fact cause the infections. Have you been assessed along this line?
Avatar n tn Hi, By age 11, most boys have become fully continent. Enuresis, or occasional incontinence like in your son may persist longer in a few kids. Most outgrow this. But if it bothers you, pl seek an appointment of a urologist, as wait-and-watch advise will just not help ease yor anxiety. All the best.
Avatar m tn As a teenager she slept through a hurricane that tore the huge maple tree in front of the house in two. As a young adult she lost two jobs from not waking up in time. There seemed to be no sure method of waking her. The only solution was having a roommate who would give her a shake or two. By the way, she slept 10 hours a night, was marvelously healthy, had plenty of energy and was fast and productive at her job. She didn't start to wake easily until she had her first baby at age 32.

Avatar f tn t mention in your question what medication you were taking. Commonly central DI is treated with desmopressin. Desmopressin works by limiting the amount of water passed in the urine. I don't know why you would suddenly notice a decrease in your symptoms after 34 years. I would recommend making an appointment with your regular doctor to see what might be causing this. Until you can be seen, it is important that you remain aware of your fluid intake and output.
Avatar n tn talk to your doctor about desmopressin, it works.
Avatar f tn If you are negative and critical, your daughter will take that in and think of herself as defective in some way. Nocturnal enuresis occurs with a small percentage of children her age and it will eventually stop. Try to be patient, understanding and supportive. The condition has nothing to do with her intelligence; she is not wanting this to happen; she cannot control it.
Avatar n tn sorry forget to mention that doc told me start on the desmopressin once i was clear of the bronchitis.. so still in the box. also he said i probably wouldnt see any results within a month... not really encouraged.
572021 tn?1330905654 Soiling is during the day and seems to usually happen in the after noon, a little bit in the mid afternoon and a little around 5pm. Sometimes he will sit on the potty and go a little bit afterwards. He was interested in the potty at about 2 1'2 and that is when we started training.
Avatar n tn By 'case study' do you mean a hypothetical scenario on paper, or are you being sent to work with a real family? I am sure if he is being bullied, and is soiling himself, then his aches and pains are very real and need to be dealt with. I am sure you mean that when he was five years old, his Mother died, and not as you said 'His Mother died at the age of five.' Enuresis, or 'Bed wetting' is not that unusual or uncommon in young boys.
Avatar m tn Is there a medication for Diabetes Insipidus other than Desmopressin? The headaches as a side affect are dibilitating. This discussion is related to peuatrygland diabetts.
Avatar m tn Scar tissue was found in different part of her brains. We saw a Neuro Psychologist and was told her intellectual scores are very low. Her learning levels are at K to 1st grade even though she's in 4th grade. She is getting services in school and has been opted out of standard testing. She's also suffering with nocturnal enuresis which every night compared to perhaps once a week a couple of years ago.
Avatar f tn Nocturnal enuresis has nothing to do with toilet training in the sense that it applies during the day. A certain percentage of children (approx. 5-10% depending on age) remain enuretic at night even when they are trained during the day. You should not be waking her up - there is no point. Over time this will resolve itself, with you really doing nothing. This depends more on development than on anything you do or do not do.
Avatar f tn What follows is an answer I recently provided for another question that I believe is also applicable in this case. Many children have problem with day-time enuresis. The issue is often the case that they really aren’t aware of their need to use the toilet, so this is no indication at all of your son being lazy. It’s something that he needs help with so that he’s better able to recognize when he has to go.
Avatar n tn We have a daughter who is 17 years old and has seemed very inmature has extreme trouble completeing school work but when she does complete, the work and turns it in carries a easy "A" she loves to read. Has read all the books in connection to the Twilght Movie. She has wet the bed almost every night since she came to live with us 4 years agao and her father says she has always been a bedwetter all her life.
Avatar n tn This is very unusual behavior for a child her age, not so much for the nocturnal enuresis (about 5%-7% of children are still wet at night at that age), but because of the daytime enuresis. I would not automatically think of this as a psychological issue, though it could be. Has she been evaluated by a pediatric urologist?
Avatar m tn Lack of the hormone vasopressin is more common in men than in women. Typically, those that do not produce enough will "correct" by the end of puberty (19-25 years old for men). Check with your urologist about the possibility of this treatment. Best of luck.
Avatar m tn You might consider an enuresis alarm that will waken you up as soon as you start to wet. It may train you then to wake up BEFORE you start to wet. And of course radically reduce your fluid intake for 4 hours before you go to bed.
Avatar f tn My 6 year old son is becoming more and more aggressive at school. It is towards no one in particular and no real reason. He also suffers from bad headaches and still wets the bed. I am at a loss what to do as he has already been suspended once.
Avatar f tn He said something like how the hypothalmus gets in shock at first from the trauma and needs DDAVP, but then it recovers. Now in your case (just as mine), I know what you mean when you say you go to the bathroom alot AND get thirsty when off the pill, as do I. But see, when you urinate ALOT, you will get thirsty...And, it's possible that one on this pill can be urinating alot when the next dose is near, because that dose is waring off. Which means, the retained water, is being released!
Avatar n tn My son will be turning 5 in march. Quick background : he and his twin sister were born 6 wks premature weighing 2 lbs 15 oz. He has minor developmental delays which he has mostly caught up with the help of therapies and special ed pre-school. He has minor digestinal issues as well, no food allergies but we suspect some intolerances. My concern is that he still wears diapers at night which are full in the morning.
Avatar f tn I have a son who is going to be 6 years in about 2 weeks. I am at my wits end, he cannot stay dry during the day. At night he will even wake up to go to the toilet. I have tried everything under the moon from rewards, charts, punishment and nothing seems to work. We have been at this game for over a year now, soon he will start school and i am so scared for him that he will be laughted at in school. We have gone back to diapers, is this a good thing or a bad thing, and whére can I get help?
