Concussion treatment swelling

Common Questions and Answers about Concussion treatment swelling

concussion

Avatar f tn Commonly blood pressure is monitered to determine the degree of swelling. Strange blood pressure readings indicate swelling. Of course a CT or MRI is also indicated. Nausea is a common symptom of swelling. They also administer medications to reduce the swelling, and ocasionally drill weep holes in the skull if this doesn't work. The other possibility when the neck is flexed is a cervical fracture. Thus a film is usually taken.
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar f tn John's concussion occured over a year ago. Is it too late for treatment? What are the treatment options? He has also been on quite a few medications to deal with this sleep problems. Could any medications that are either used to help with sleep or used to promote day time wakefulness cause hperosmia?
Avatar m tn About 5 months ago I slipped on ice and hit my head on pavement (front right temple). I had what I think may be considered as a mild concussion (loss of consciousness for 1 minute followed by heavy disorientation (amnesia?) for 7 minutes) At that time I was very drunk and I am thinking this played a large role on why I even lost consciousness. (I am only an occasional drinker though) I am a very healthy 28 y/o male.
Avatar n tn Time will tell (usually by puberty) whether there is a problem as growth of the nasal bones and septum result in either a cosmetic or a functional problem. If so, treatment would be more appropriate at that time. Any surgical treatment now might affect growth centers that could condemn her to more problems later.
Avatar n tn Last Sunday I was running around the lake and slipped on ice - landed on the back of my head. I was taken to the hospital and they kept me for 30 hours. They did a ct scan and said no skull fracture, but I had the equivalent of a basebal on the back of my head and they said that I had the same amount of swelling on the inside. So a concussion and something about a hemotoma (sp?) Anyway, I can't really hear out of my left ear and I can't smell/taste anything.
Avatar n tn I was hit from behind when playing ball hockey and I suffered a concussion after I went head first into the goalie. I had a cat scan done and it was normal immediately after the hit. Its been 11 months and everytime I try a light exercise for example walking around the block for about 20 minutes I get headaches. I used to swim, jog and play sports regularly and now since the accident I have gained a lot weight and don't know what to do to stay active.
Avatar m tn I hit my head on the ice about 12 hours ago. ER said concussion. I have not had any of the symptoms the ER said I should return for but where the lump was there is now a soft spot. Should I return?

12128836 tn?1423574148 In all concussions there is swelling. The swelling in turn impinges on blood flow, which in turn causes necrosis (death) of brain cells. In general there is a window-of-opportunity to administer drugs to reduce the swelling. There can be damage without the presence of nausea or of unconsciousness. This damage may not show on an MRI. The other possibility is a brain bleed from the blow. The blood must be drained within a short period of time.
Avatar f tn If there is swelling or bleeding and there is no treatment the result may be permanent loss of sentience, partial paralysis, emotional danage because of destruction of regulatory mechanisms, and chronic debilitating pain. In addition any head injury involving neck flexure must be considered a "rule out spinal damage". You must not wait for a doctor's appointment. You need to go to an emergency room, preferably at a hospital designated as a trauma center.
Avatar f tn If u have congenital chiari it could be the concussion caused additional swelling to add to the obstruction that was already there and lifting the chair made it worse. Ur parents need to help u locate a true chiari specialist to see what all is going on...see if in fact u have an obstruction, a syrinx, tethered cord, disk issues, ICP, sleep apnea, ehlers-danlos....all to understand y u r having the symptoms u r having and the best course of action and treatment.
Avatar n tn t make a habit of it. In a concussion, there is always brain swelling. There a window of opportunity to reduce the swelling. Action is ideally taken within the first four hours. After 24 hours, there isn't much to do after several days. All the damage than can be done has been done. The swelling has the potential to compress blood vessels, causing ischemia and death of brain cells. The bad-news bears. In the future, if you ever bang your head hard, head for an emergency room.
Avatar n tn https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/post-concussion-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20353352 Make sure to tell the doctor about all of the workouts you're doing, to make sure you're not perpetuating the problem by doing a specific exercise. Hope you start to improve!
Avatar m tn the kitten probably sustained head trauma which caused the seizure and his abnormal breathing. He needs treatment to reduce the swelling in his brain. Usually, the voicemail at your vet's office tells you the number of the recommended emergency clinics in the area. You can always google emergency vets in your area as well. Hope the little kitty makes it..

Avatar n tn Welcome...Bless his/her heart! What happened? This is normally a Neurological Issue due to injury to the brain & nervous system from head trauma....In your case (One week later) sounds as if the swelling has not been brought under control...The Vet that diagnosed the "Concussion" should have given an Anti-inflammatory (Usually steroids) to help with the inflammation. You need to return to your Vet today & have your puppy checked again.....
Avatar f tn Saturday night I was going to a friends house in Long Island and it had just snowed but it was then raining at the moment. I was walking down a ramp of the house and I slid down flat on my behind and banged the back of my head on the wooden ramp. The center of the back of my head hurts if you touch it but there is no lump there which I find unusual. The crazy part is that my front and back of the neck feels stiff as well as my jaw. It hurts so much even if I sneeze.
Avatar f tn This is not something you need to wait to see a dr with. You may have a bad concussion or you could have some swelling or bleeding in your head somewhere. It can become very serious quickly so I would advise you to seek medical attention.
8506420 tn?1398432580 There are no signs of bone injury nor any swelling could be felt. Kitten did not respond or show any pain when we felt the different portions of her head and body. There was no increase in heart rate and breathing. There is no bleeding from the nose, but there seemed to be anal discharge due to a foul smell, but no liquid is excreting. Movement is 100% when treats are shown to her, she is able to run around and jump as per normal without any disorientation.
602261 tn?1252583158 I suffered a pretty serious concussion yesterday aside from that tonight is shot night and I only have five shots left. 163305 tn?1333668571 Many doctors think the best treatment for fibromyalgia is thyroid replacement hormones, since fibromyalgia was not even a condition until the mid 1980's when it was decided that TSH would be the "gold standard" for thyroid testing and because the range was too wide, many people who had previously been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, were now left with no diagnosis...

Avatar f tn Usually, such headaches and dizziness may result due to post-concussion syndrome and may last for weeks or months after the injury that caused from the injury of a fall, vehicle accident, or sports injury. In addition, patient may experience either migraine type or tension type headache. For treatment approach, first it is essential to get (MRI) done to detect the brain abnormalities after that injury.
