Common Questions and Answers about Clopidogrel use

plavix

Avatar n tn If a patient has drug eluding stent (DES) implant it is recommended that plavix (clopidogrel) be prescribed up to a year to help prevent blood clots with the implant. If one has A-fib there is a risk that blood clots can occur as blood may pool due to the very fast beat. Information regarding the use of the 2 anti-platelet together can present a problem and the source is MedinceNet.com.
Avatar m tn Patients at risk for heart attacks or strokes who use clopidogrel to prevent blood clots will not get the full effect of this medicine if they are also taking omeprazole. The updated label for clopidogrel will contain details of new studies submitted by Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb, the manufacturer of Plavix (clopidogrel) Other drugs that should be avoided in combination with clopidogrel because they may have a similar interaction include: esomeprazole (Nexium).

690060 tn?1247841741 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has new data showing that omeprazole (Prilosec/Prilosec OTC)—a medicine used to reduce stomach acid—reduces the anti-blood clotting effect of clopidogrel (Plavix) by almost half when these two medicines are taken by the same patient." "...Patients using clopidogrel should consult with their healthcare provider if they are currently taking or considering taking omeprazole, including Prilosec OTC" but then, there's also this: http://www.

Avatar m tn And plavix use prior to a DES implant has been a subject of indesiveness and uncertainty since the introduction of drug eluding stents....subject of many threads on this forum. "Why" longer term therapy has been asked? There has been a recent study designed to evaluate the relationship between clopidogrel (plavix) use and long-term rates of cardiac death or MI after DES implantation. ".....stopped taking clopidogrel and were followed up for an additional 12 months.
Avatar n tn After six years post MI and ef varying between 25-35%, my cardiologist now feels that I should shift from aspirin(150)+clopidogrel (75) to warfarin. Two years back he did tell me that he is double minded on whether to put me on warfarin. But this time he appears to be very sure and has insisted me to go for warfarin. His justification is "that is what literature says". I have no AF or valve problem.
482754 tn?1341791494 I no longer have to take clopidogrel and effient wasn't around for me to use. However, I do remember reading some articles on this medication. Although it has been approved for patient use, it does have one concern. If you are on this drug and have surgery such as a bypass, it tends to cause severe bleeding, which can be fatal. Clopidrogrel (plavix) has no such problem attached to it. On the plus side, it reduces other risks dramatically and outperforms clopidogrel hands down.
Avatar f tn s like if I want some Clopidogrel (another form of anti platelet med) I could ask for either Clopidogrel or Plavix, Plavix is the brand name the drug company trades the medication under.
Avatar n tn Ive only heard of proton pump inhibitors reducing the effect of Clopidogrel (plavix) but only by a tiny amount. I do have to question though if Zantac is a proton pump inhibitor anyway? Isn't it just a H2 receptor blocker?
Avatar f tn ve had arthralgia ,oseaophigitis, rashes and chest pain .
Avatar m tn Evidence is available from retrospective analysis of the CPARIE trial with clopidogrel that patients who have atherosclerosis in other vascular beds, such as prior ischemic stroke or concurrent peripheral vascular disease, benefit from receiving clopidogrel over aspirin. Some cardiologists have concluded that these patients, who are at higher risk of a subsequent vascular event, would benefit from combined therapy.
Avatar n tn Warfarin (coumadin): Because of the increased risk of bleeding, the concomitant administration of Warfarin with Plavix should be undertaken with caution. (See PRECAUTIONS - General.) At high concentrations in vitro, clopidogrel inhibits P450 (C).
Avatar m tn Hello; I have got one coronary DES stent implanted since two month ago ("Endeavor RESOLUTE RX"). I am on clopidogrel, aspirin, atorvastatin, carvedilol, enalapril and pantoprazol. Fearing about scars growing inside the stent's mesh, I have read that some people recommend vitamin E for cosmetic appearance of scars; well, my question is: Could vitamin E be of some help for preventing "in-stent restenosis"? Is it worth trying? Thanks!
