My doctor just put me on Cipro for a UTI. I am also on the pill (Ovcon 35). Can the Cipro cause the pill to be less effective?
Answer: When a woman is taking oral contraceptives and has to also take antibiotics (such as Cipro) that could decrease the effectiveness of the oral contraceptives, it is recommended that she use a back up method of contraception (i.e. a condom) during the entire time she is on the antibiotics and for 7 days after she stops taking the antibiotics.
I have checked and seen that there are interactions in taking these drugs together. How long until the cipro 500 is out of my system so I can begin the other antibiotics and prednizone? Thank you.

Here is a great article about food interactions with drugs sometimes used to treat Lyme and coinfections. I have been on a few of the meds listed in the artIcle, and I was unaware of these conflicts, especially dairy / calcium with the tetracyclines (Doxycycline, Minocycline) & fluroquinolones (Cipro, Avelox, Levaquin).
It also mentions that caffeine, and therefore chocolate, can interfere with some antibiotics, but then doesn't say which ones.

Yes, I do. I review the interactions of taking Zanaflex. I was surprised of what I couldn't take that I have been - cipro to name one. I haven't been able to take OTC medicines for 12 years. I react by becoming abnormally sedated.
This may be TMI but I also have pretty severe allergies I don't treat so when I get a cold, I can barely breath out of my nose and any swallowing or talking causes a funny clicking/suction noise.
Im traveling in mexico and got pretty sick (my best guess is it was 'Travelers Diarrhea' or maybe food poisioning) I went to the pharmacy and got 500mg Cipro pills. I took one and got a horrible headache and vomitted alot. My symptoms seem to be gone however would it be a bad idea to stop taking the Cipro? I know people say you should always finish a course of antibiotics but in this case I dont know if I need them.
Also, I am being treated with Cipro, which I just took a round of that for a UT about 2.5 months ago. Should I be repeating the same antibotic so soon, and will it be as effective if I do.
I took 1 dose of 500mg Cipro Friday night at 5:30p.m. Immediately felt flushed and red in the face.
I continue to have flare ups 3 days later. How long does this take to go away.

I have problems with UTI and kidney infections on a regular basis. I have been on Cipro on and off since 1994. Cipro has allways worked very well for me. I have not experienced side effects from this drug. I have had other antibiotics prescribed to me that did have some negative side effects. In my case Sulfa drugs causes hives.
From 1994 up to 2003, I used to come down with UTI and kidney infections that required hospitalizations with a frequency of about every 3 to 4 months.
Yes Cipro can definately cause rythm issues. I cant remember where I read this but my doctor was going to give it to me until I showed him the info (that he did not have himself). So yes---In fact--since you brought it up--I have a new group called side effects of medications. Feel free to post your side effects there.
is it safe to take 125 mg of cipro each day for 6 months I was prescribed this for a UTI that keeps coming back. Also the pharmacy that filled the prescription gave me 250mg tablets and told me they aren't made in 125mg. and for me to break in half . But the info that comes with the meds says not to break.crush, or chew.
i also take hormones and xanax...i read where alot of my meds have interactions...but pharmisits say its ok.............
This is a specific group of antibiotics called "Fluoroquinolone's" it includes some of the following Cipro,Ciproxin,Ciprobay,Ciproproxine,Ciflox and Livaquin, Two other medications in this group have been taken off the market by the FDA some time ago for the nasty reactions they had.
He prescribed 7 more days of Cipro. Therefore, she had 3 days of Cipro (no result) and then the (1,000mg-Zithro) 2 pills at once. Then a couple of days later, she started Cipro again for a week. I'm sorry, I wrote that incorrectly and I can see how it looked like the PA prescribed another week of Zithro, but that was not the case, it is Cipro. Would 1,000mg Zithro kill Chlamydia if there was a possibility of an infection?

If I am remembering correctly, the doctor who took me off the Clindymiacin ended up putting me on Cipro and it worked like a charm! That time it was also a tooth infection and an infected salivary gland so I don't understand why we can't just do that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
