I have read about overgrowth and did take cipro 500 mg daily for 5 days and came out of being so weak I could hardly walk episode!..the dr said just try and it helped..thank you! I know taking antibiotics when no fever or culture sounds questionable but it did help a few months ago.....I am in pain a lot but when I am really weak..I wonder if something else is going on..
My question is what's causing my small intestinal bacterial overgrowth? For years I've suffered from terrible flatulence and recently I had a course of antibiotics which made it completely stop! It was amazing! It sounds trivial to some people but it really isn't, my flatulence ruins my life. It is very socially limiting.
I also noticed when I had the antibiotics my stools ceased being yellow which I believe happened because bacteria deconjugates bile.
Yes - I suffer from chronic pancreatitis and had SOD. Back in 2006 I had SOD surgery. I also suffer from IBS. Also, one doctor thought I had gastroparesis because I had an abnormal emptying study last year, but I just returned from Mayo and the emptying study came back normal. Also, most recent doctor thought I had Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth and put me on Cipro for 8 days. Now I don't know if the pain is from my stomach/antibiotics or the pancreas.
After doing a little more research about the Guinness sold here in the U.S., looks like the pasteurization process would eliminate it's yeast content or at least lower it greatly. Perhaps I was benefiting from all of the other great things about Guinness, high in iron, good for circulation, laxative properties, and of course it's tasting oh so good.

Like my relatives, I was never overweight and I never abused drugs, alchohol, etc.
Several of my relatives died young from various gastrointestinal diseases.
Saw my doctor because terrible irritation in penis tip, sore testicles and having to urinate all night. No burning when I pee or discharge but significant pain at tip. Doctor did first catch urine test; neg for leuk & nitrates, said it could be prostatis so he gave me 7 days of Cipro. Had a minor surgery a few days later so did not take it. The next week it got even worse, so went to urologist. Same symptoms but worse. Dr. asked if it could be std, I told him I doubt it...
Just recently, i was diagnosed with slow digestion which gave me bacterial overgrowth. I had extreme diarrhea everyday and sometimes vomiting for 7 weeks before i was prescribed Xifaxan. I immediately started feeling better after the first dose.
About two weeks after Xifaxan, i woke up with diarrhea again but just for a day. I was told to take Florastor, i am. After that i was constipated for 6 days until today that i have been going to the bathroom all day.
My question is what can i do to restore the good bacteria and how do i prevent getting bacterial overgrowth again??? I am living in fear of getting sick again and dont want to end up like i did a few weeks ago. I almost got kicked out of my Ultrasound program in school because i missed so much :(

I've been diagnosed with small intestinal bacteria overgrowth after 8 years of chronic diarrhea and multiple tests. I went to University of Michigan Hospital where the doctors performed a Hydrogen Breath Test. It was positive. I just finished the Cipro and probiotic. My question is this, since small intestinal bacteria overgrowth can be caused by taking acid blocking medicine like Nexium or Prilosec, will the bacteria come back since I continue to take Prilosec for GERD?

As we saw in Part II and Part III, a high carbohydrate diet promotes bacterial overgrowth. Bacterial overgrowth – in particular H. pylori – can suppress stomach acid. So after 5 years of no answers for all my abdominal pain, bloating, and severe acid reflux and GERD - my new gastroenterologist diagnosed me with bacterial overgrowth of my small intestine. First was Augmentin which did nothing then Rifaxim and that did nothing also. The follow up breath tests showed no reduction in CH4 levels, which are very high.

Thanks Vance. The Dr. called me today and recommended me to a urologist and switched me to cipro saying it really sounds more like a bad UTI and Cipro is stronger than doxycycline. He feels that the chances of me still having an STD are practically zero.
I don't think it's herpes because it really isn't uncomfortable to urinate. I do have red inside my meatus/urethra and it is irritated for sure.
Also Bacterial Vaginosis is an overgrowth of bacteria and can actually re- occur at any time even with treatment..... The treatment you received might not be strong enough to fight on the infection....
I was put on Cipro for 5-7 days. I went back at the end of the 7 days because I had developed a vaginal discharge. Doctor took another urine sample, said the urine was fine, did a vaginal exam and claimed I had BV/Yeast and said there were a lot of WBC. I was given flagyl tablets and diflucan. At the end of those 10 days, I went back again because I STILL had discharge. Doc still said BV though he never sent out any cultures, tried Dlindamycin. No help. Tried Doxycycline, no help.
I STRONGLY encourage all of you with this excessive burping problem to inform your doctor that you believe it is due to BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH. You can find alot about Bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine on Google. Many doctors are unaware of this condition and it is easily treatable with antibiotics. Good luck to all of you I know what a horrible burden on life this burping can be.
A few days later I started to have a tingling sensation, like I had to pee, so I went to an urgent care and they gave me Cipro for prostatitis. I had an STD screen three days into my Cipro cycle and it came back negative. I completed the 10 day cycle of Cipro, had a 7 day cycle of Doxocycline due to symptoms persisting, and then had another test done 4 days after the completion of Doxocycline. All tests were negative.
I am currently back on Cipro after seeing a urologist.
Ok about a week ago I had a sinus infection. For two days i took some Keflex twice a day that I had left over. It wasnt helping , I found a bottle of cipro I had left over and I took one. Thats it. A few days ago my boyfriend starts having symptoms of chlamydia or gonnerea ureathra hurting, discharge etc. I have no symptoms. We have only slept together once in the last couple weeks. Anyways, I went and got tested and I have bacterial vaginosis. I have not been with anybody but him.
A strong liquid made of plant oils and menthol to apply to the area, a cream for a yeast infections of mucous membranes,, and a cream for bacterial skin infections. I have had this infection and purple line for TWO months and my daily regimen with these products– summer's eve soap in the shower, application of the plant oil/menthol, then application of the bacterial cream, has done nothing for me.
