t on it at all, the only bad side effect was loss of sex drive and libido etc. no weight gain or loss that i noticed. I have bipolar 1, and was on other medication at the time. as you probably know everyone is different when it comes to these types of medication so please don't be discouraged by my comment. My dad was on it for 10 years and said it was the best thing he had ever tried for depression.

So...I'm scared and sad and a bit at a loss. The weight continues to drop (indicated more by clothes fit than scale) and it seems to my eyes to be more muscle than fat. I continue to have nearly no interest in food and at this point, 2 drs are going to blame a nearly 30 lb weight loss on anxiety. Again...
major weight gain. The Celexa site states it does not cause weight gain. Ask a few million people. It is fast and impossible to get off. 35lbs in 3months. Be careful to watch your weight. I looked into it and found it is used to treat anorexia and bulimia. Maybe there is something in the chemical composition that reacts drastically different with some people. I hope it works for you.

In addition, that blood work I mentioned...I was out of range for Lymphocytes and apparently, a fast is required prior go Lipase/Amylase testing. I was not told to fast.

My daughter has been on celexa for about 1 1/2 years. She had depression, anxiety, ocd and an eating disorder. She also saw a therapist for a year and a nutritionist. The problem is she has gained about 30 pounds and eats all time. Doesn't want to exercise anymore either. I feel like she went from one extreme to another. I just want her to be healthy and happy? I have read info on Wellbutrin and from what I read that may be a better alternative.
This is a process called augmentation, but you only augment a primary medication that has been found to work but just not well enough. For depression, either celexa or wellbutrin would be a primary antidepressant to try first; usually it would be celexa if anxiety is present, as I assume it is or else the valium would be counterproductive. Wellbutrin is a more stimulating antidepressant, and so wouldn't usually be a primary med for someone with anxiety.
I am at the 3 month mark after weening myself from Celexa. I struggle every day with weight loss. I measure everything I put into my mouth. I exercise every day. I have only lost 4 pounds. I now realize how horrible Celexa made me feel. I was completely exhausted all of the time...didn't have the ability to care about anything. I feel so alive without the drug but my sex drive still hasn't come back. I don't like being in public anymore due to my weight.
It's not a wash-out period, it's the withdrawal. Celexa physiologically leaves your system within hours, but the brain doesn't adapt very well sometimes to not having the drug in the system and goes through a withdrawal. I can be significant or minor or non-existent, but to play it safe these meds are tapered down slowly to minimize any possible withdrawal. Actually, meds that wash out of the system more slowly, like Prozac, tend to have fewer withdrawal problems.
lagoya, thanks for the reply! It does help to know that others have experienced weight loss. Most of the research you find on IBS indicates that weight loss is a "red flag" symptom. They usually put the tag of "unexplained" on that, but when you're not feeling well and think that your symptoms are being caused by something serious, then the weight loss is unexplained to you...LOL!
hikingjon- Have you had a CT scan?
I'm currently on Paxil and Xanax, and have been experiencing a complete loss of appetite most days. I started eating a few days ago, but I'm only on 10mg a day for the Paxil. It takes a while for stuff to kick in, but this med has made me lose 10 lbs in 2 weeks. When I was 14 (I'm now 25) I was put on Celexa, and I was on it for a couple of years. I remember the Dr. increased my dosage a few times, and eventually I felt like a zombie. And YES I did gain weight.
I've been on Celexa for quite sometime, and it continues to work very well. If it reaches a point where it doesn't, consult with your doctor, I'm sure there is an alternative. I haven't gained any weight and it's my understanding the weight gain is not a side effect of this drug. I recently lost 40 lbs. I would not take this at night without consulting with your doctor first.
Took Paxil for depression, OCD, Panic Attacks and Anxiety. Worked like a charm only you gain weight. I discovered that most AD's cause unexplained weight gain. It was hell getting off of it but I am not on it anymore, however, I feel more depressed now than ever.
Does anyone have any suggestions as far as an AD that doesn't cause weight gain? Paxil is one of the older ones and apparently one of the worst for this.
Free T4 of 1.1 is normal, are sure they measured free T4? where did you got those values (4.5-11)?
Ferritin is your iron storage, 13 is low for a man, but how is your Hb levels (hemoglobin), RBC count?
If you have nodules, multiple nodules are better then having only one (one is always suspect), so you must talk to the ENDO (if they measure more then 1 cm). Most of your symptoms (not the weight) probably are related to anemia. You must explore that, why you have anemia?

In other words, on the average, people taking the drug lost a few oz. Big deal. And your mileage will vary, see doctor for details.
At some point you must choose which is more important: looking good or feeling good.
I am convinced that my Celexa is a major culprit in my weight gain. Before Celexa, I was on Zoloft, and the first week on Zoloft I lost weight, but then stabilized and slowly began to gain weight. the weight gain was not a big amount but it did happen.
Then a few yrs later, I began having problems on Zoloft so my Doc switched me to Celexa, and "whamo!", BIG WEIGHT GAIN! It was amazing!
On top of the weight gain, Celexa has made me lethargic and very tired.
