Avatar m tn I meant to add, before Gymdandee does, that if you really want to use chocolate for energy, use something that has as much unsweetened dark chocolate as you can tolerate -- you're still using caffeine for your rush, but at least you're also getting antioxidants and you're getting the full effect of the chocolate, whereas Hershey's really doesn't have much real chocolate inside.

Avatar n tn First thing to know is that even thought the dietician may recommend high carb, there is another school of thought that looks at low carb during pregnancy. By low carb I mean plenty of non starchy veges, cheese, meat, eggs, regular fat, unsweetened dairy, nuts etc. You can research that online. I used the low carb approach and it helped a lot in controlling blood sugar. IF blood sugar is higher than you want, then a walk may help. Probably insulin will be on the cards.

There are plenty of great recipes for low carb foods these days. For example, instead of having spaghetti and meat sauce, I have spiralized zucchini with meat sauce. My kids don't like zucchini, but they sure like "green spaghetti"; and sometimes we make orange spaghetti by spiralizing carrots.

Avatar f tn I had 2 successful diabetic pregnancies (on insulin) using low carb approach. I found if I ate the amount of carbs they wanted me to (about 240 g/day), I would have gained an unreasonable amount of weight and also I would have had great trouble controlling blood sugars. Most important in pregnancy is to control blood sugar. This is more important than eating lots of carbs. Focus instead on meats, eggs, unsweetened, diary, protein, and low carb veges. Avatar f tn If you drink a lot of sodas, try exchanging just one/day with a glass of water or unsweetened tea. If you keep doing this eventually, you will only be drinking water and unsweetened drinks. Do the same with sweet foods; when you're craving sugar, try eating something with cinnamon or vanilla; both have a sweet flavor but won't flood your body with empty calories. Try an apple with peanut butter for a snack.... yummy!!
