Common Questions and Answers about Canine pancreatitis diet dogs

pancreatitis

Avatar m tn The cause can sometimes be unknown, but very often follows after eating any fatty food (Turkey skin for instance, or even chicken fat etc) Even a few table scraps CAN cause Pancreatitis attacks in susceptible dogs. And very often, when they have had one -unless they stay on a strict diet, they can get another attack in the future. Has your vet excluded this as a possibility? The treatment sounds harsh but is the best way to manage an attack.
1485641 tn?1287974298 I cant say whether or not pesticides are the problem but continued episodes of your dogs vomiting and diarrhea can lead to Pancreatitis which can lead to Diabetes and daily insulin injections. Now is the time to take preventative pet health steps to try to avoid this. My recommendation would be to have your vet run a set of complete blood and urine tests. Then unless the lab tests pinpoint a specific canine health problem, consider a bland home made diet, digestive enzymes and probiotics.
Avatar f tn Daily subcutaneous fluid administration is the single most important factor in canine kidney failure therapy. Generally, in dogs like yours, we see a reduction of BUN and Creatinine levels within 30-60 days of proper kidney therapy. Natural canine vitamin supplements offering balanced, comprehensive levels of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants would be very helpful.
Avatar f tn The safest diet for dogs is regular, commercially available dog food. I have 3 large breed dogs, and almost never give them any people food. They don't "need" it, and people food often helps contribute to canine obesity, if overdone.
793908 tn?1294705109 I think it's best to avoid garlic. Garlic and onions are very similar, and onions are a definite no for dogs. Some people do give dogs garlic, and the dogs seem to be ok, but I always think it's best to avoid it. As I said, dogs' sense of taste and smell is something like a hundred times more powerful than ours, so they get the taste of their food very well, and don't need any added seasonings.
Avatar m tn I am not quite sure what that type of diet entails but I am willing to listen to all ideas and/or explainations for a diabetic do diet. Like I said earlier, her vet doesn't have any ideas other then the Low Residue rx foods because Sweety has a very sensitive stomach. Or the old stand by of boiled white meat only chicken and veggies such as broccoli or green beans, she hates green beans! I know that she is getting very bored with this food day in and day out but.....
Avatar f tn My 9 month old puppy was diagnosed with pancreatitis today, they kept him at the vet all day giving him IV fluids. They let us take him home tonight so he was only admitted for about 12 hours.
Avatar f tn 1.Hills K/D Canine prescription diet or Royal Canin Renal Failure diets (or other prescription failure diet) 2. Epakitin, Phos-Lo or other phosphate binder if there is high phosphorus levels in the blood. 3. Azodyl which helps relieve the body of excess kidney enzyme blood levels via the digestive tract. 4. Additional probiotics to help maximize GI function. 5. Sub Cutaneous fluid therapy to be administered at home 6.
1627010 tn?1299446388 ve changed all the drops that I give her, added liver happy and cod liver oil to her diet, and it has helped some. Does anyone have any other suggestions that I might try. I do not want her to lose her eye sight. She loves the world to much to be deprived of the joy of seeing things.
1880256 tn?1322569908 Just a quick note to point out that human influenza and canine influenza are two different viruses and just as humans cannot catch canine flu, it is equally true that canines cannot catch human flu.
Avatar m tn For some reason, Cushingoid dogs are more prone to pancreatitis than normal dogs, so it will be important for you to keep your dog's diet very low in fat. You also want to keep the food low in fiber and high in potassium. Cushings medication makes it difficult for dogs to digest high fiber foods properly, and high potassium diets just give them more "oomph" when dealing with taking the necessary medications. What medications does you vet have your dog on?
Avatar f tn Best thing is, she is feeling great, eating a very restricted diet of Royal Canine low fat and white meat chicken only! What a marvelous blessing that now, she is OK. Just wish my REGULAR vet had diagnosed this since I had her there twice that week....Seems so unfair that life has to have a pricetag on it. If I didn't have a credit card, how could I pay? I cannot even think about the alternatives....So, thanks for your help!
Avatar f tn Assuming it IS CKD, then it is at a very early stage and a restricted low-protein diet is certainly not necessary. Lowing phosphorus in the diet cannot do any harm, so this is worth pursuing - but do we know whether phosphorus is abnormally high in the blood? What do the blood results say? It is certainly not worth starting a binder at this early stage just yet. Frankly, any vet that advises a DRY DOG FOOD for dogs that have or may have kidney disease is very bad.
Avatar m tn When a dog is diagnosed with pancreatitis it is usually blamed on a high-fat diet but a diet that is high in fat will not cause pancreatitis in a dog with a healthy pancreas. A high-fat diet will, however, aggravate an already-diseased pancreas to the point where an attack of pancreatitis is the result. Some dogs are genetically predisposed to pancreatic disease. Dogs with parathyroid conditions are predisposed, as are dogs who get too much calcium in their diets.
1644524 tn?1301002292 t eat, we feel we have to try ANYTHING at all to get him to eat! But stop. Right now. Pedigree is basically canine junk food, and hotdogs are much too laden with salt and fat to be the right thing to eat (much as he wants these things!) Drinking milk is better than drinking nothing I guess. But dogs are lactose-intolerant, by their very natures! Milk is not a good idea, even if it does contain Vitamin D.
82861 tn?1333453911 With another holiday coming right up that involves lots and lots of food, beware the the counter-surfing dog! My neighbor's 120-lb labrador retriever should be in the movies. My neighbor spent all Thanksgiving day smoking a 14-pound turkey. He had it on the kitchen counter cooling before carving when he went out to the garage for a few minutes. What greeted him on returning would have sent me to a mental hospital. Yep.

1832268 tn?1326816010 t know anything about starting a Group on this forum, but with all of the Dogs out there with Kidney Insufficiency...( failure ).....maybe it is time to start a Canine Kidney Support Group. Poochie Parents can offer support, tips and advice.....What do you think...?
Avatar f tn They sent her home and put her on the royal canine renal food and subcutaneous fluids twice a week. She has since had normal stool with a small amount of blood followed by diarrhea with more blood. I have given her plain yogurt the past two days but may stop that now. The vet wants to put her back on her old food Natural Balance-I got the can instead of the kibble and wants me to give her famotidine for the diarrhea. She is still drinking some water and peeing.
16928817 tn?1452455752 After he comes home he must be on a very low-fat diet, since foods that are high in fat can be a cause of pancreatitis. Dogs that eat a lot of human food are more susceptible than dogs who eat strictly dog food. Fatty human food will not CAUSE pancreatitis in a healthy pancreas, but so many breeds today are overbred (and pit bulls are one of the most overbred breeds out there next to labs) that they have problems that nobody even realizes they have until something like this happens.

Avatar m tn It sounds as though the rabies shot has overwhelmed your dog somewhat. Dogs, as they grow older find it harder to cope with shots as they did when they were younger. Their immune systems get overwhelmed. We don't have the rabies shot in the UK, but I understand it can cause a lot of problems. For rabies shot reactions, this is a very good and informative site: http://www.dogs4dogs.com/truth4dogs.
