You could ask your dr about Humalin-N and Humalin-R, which tend to be cheaper. But these are not available as mixed insulins and need to be taken as MDI (Humlin-N, twice a day, and humlin R- abouy 30 minutes before eating).
To Reduce insulin requirements, you can follow a low carb diet, reduce weight (if overweight), and add in daily exercise. This should be done under medical supervision as these measures may mean you can reduce your insulin / at risk of low blood sugars.
Extreme heat or cold can impact the effectivess of insulin. The injection site can sometimes be a factor in absorption of the insulin and ultimate impact on blood sugar. Then, of course, there are also a million other things that go on in our bodies that seem to wreak havoc with our blood sugars without any clue as to why.
I wouldn't hurry to change your insulin without first exploring the issue with your diabetes doctor. Good luck and let me know how you resolve this.
I have read other articles that discuss more allergy issues with Humalog than with Novolog. But as LRS has written, each person is different, and there really IS no set standard that is perfect for each person. With this disease, some trial and error is absolutely necessary in order to discover what works best for the individual.
I'm not a doctor and these questions should be discussed with your doctor or nurse educator. It will most likely depend on his blood sugar when he has the snack and how much and what kind of a snack he has. Checking his blood sugar a couple hours he has asnack should also tell you if he needed a little more insulin. But I wouldn't do anything without checking it out with your doctor first.
I am a type one and have been on novalog for 5 years. For the last 6 months sometime my novolog works and sometimes it don't. For example tonight four hours after meal I was at 280 so I tryed to correct with 5 units of novolog. Normally this should have brought my numbers down but, tonight and here laity 3 hours later i was still at 259...It's like i never tryed to correct.
Normally your care provider would have provided you with instructions. Didn't instructional paperwork accompany the pen? Contact your care provider for the proper amount [units] designated for you. Then Google search "how to use novolog flex pen" [w/o the " " [quotes]], scroll down and click the link to [PDF] NovoLog Flex Pen. You'll need a .pdf reader to read it. If you don't have one, go to Adobe and download and install the free pdf file reader.
Take your breakfast soon after you wake up (you will need to dose Novolog to provide both a correction and to cover the food). it will be best if your breakfast is very low carb ie. eggs or meat and some veges, to avoid further increasing blood sugars too much. Eating may actually help stop the liver putting out sugar, which it does in response to an overnight fast.

He also has a primary immune deficiency. I am wondering if anyone else has to change sites so often, and whether it could be the insulin (humalog)? We love the flexibility and precision of the pump, but this has been difficult.
It takes a while for food to get into your system and for the insulin to work. You would be surprised at how much of a difference a half hour can make in your blood sugar. If it is still high, then I might consider lowering the Lantis and increasing the Novolog to cover breakfast, but not without talking to your doctor first. The other possibility is eating a small snack around 11:30 to prevent the lows.
I am a type 1 diabetic and I have been using Novolog for the past three years. For the first year I was using it by shots, but the last two years I have been using it in an insulin pump. In the last three to four months I have developed intense itching at the infusion site when I change it. For about 36 hours it itches so much I have scratched it to bleeding. In the last few weeks it has begun itching almost as soon as I put in a new canula.
I've been a Type 1 diabetic for 40 years. I would suggest that you wait to take your Lantus shot until you normally take it the next day. You may need to check your blood sugar a couple extra times and may need to increase your Novolog dosage at one or more meals. Just be careful and take less rather than more to be safe. Good luck.
I am at the point now where I am trying to cut 95% of the carbs out of my diet and increase my physical activity so that I can reduce the need for Novolog, loose weight and eventually loose my need for Lantus as well. Prayerfully this will work. The doctor said that loosing at least 15 pounds would take my insulin dependency level down.
