665125 tn?1273023924 During my TT they had to remove 2 of my parathyroid glands and I had seriously low blood calcium levels and i wasa taking 2 0.25 mcg calciteral tablets and taking around 6 1200mg of calcium tablets. I had to get re admitted back to the hospital for 3 days after my TT so that they could monitor my blood calcicum levels and also had to go to the ER soon after my surgery so that they could give me some fluids and stablise me..
Avatar f tn It really depends. . .I had my total thyroidectomy on 8/4 and had a calcium crash a few days later. After being in the hospital for a week on an IV calcium drip, I was released on massive amounts of calcitriol (Prescription vit. ) & calcium. I am now down to manageable levels of calcium (3 a day) and my doctor wants me off of the calcitriol. . .
536009 tn?1293190781 Just curious are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate one and the same? I have been taking 500mg of the calcium 2xday and each pill has the vitamin d 400. Thanks for that advice... I had hyperparathyroidism,,, and thus had the surgery and now am on this.. I was considering colace...for the old bowel problem....as I really feel the calcium is the culprit of that... Will up my water intake too. Thanks again safe trip!! ..
Avatar n tn My endo looked at these numbers and said continue on the high dose of tums and the calcitriol and come back in 2 months!!!!! I am scared I will be on the large number of tums forever and taking Rocaltrol forever. Does anyone understand my numbers given that I am on Rocaltrol and 8 Tums a day? Is my ionized calcium too high? Nobody has explained anything to me and I am concerned about how often I should get my leveles checked and if I should be weaned from the drugs and when?
570700 tn?1217147175 25mg (2 tablets a day).her symptoms resolved with 5 months of treatment and her calcium levels improved to 8.4,phosphates dropped to 5.5 and PTH 2.5.As the levels improved the dose was reduced on her own.Presently on treatment with Shellcal (Calcium carbonate ) 500mg bd and Rocaltrol 0.25 mg od. Her CEC.T Brain done a week back shows extensive intra cranial calcification in the cerebellum, caudate nucleus & lentiform nucleus however with no involuntary movements. Present calcium level is 8.
Avatar f tn 2 days later, however I went back to ER with calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) my hands and mouth felt like I was getting paralized. With calcium supplementation and 2 tablets of calcitriol, it seems that the tingling sensation is under control. 3 nights ago, I developed a cough at night that have kept me from sleeping! Can anyone help me? I have a lot of phlegm and post nasal drip. And there's a part of my throat that tickles.
455126 tn?1212432198 You may want to ask at your appointment if they ended up removing any of your parathyroids, and how many if they did. I had surgery in January and now only have one parathyroid so am still on calcium 3x's per day and calcitriol, my parathyroid is finaly starting to kick back in but it's still a bit low to be able to take me off all that completely yet. Sometimes if I feel any tingling I will take a tums (that's in addition to what I already take) just as a quick fix.
Avatar n tn I just got home yesterday and am on massive doses of Vit D and calcium carbonate with daily trips to the lab for calcium levels. I know the terrible feelings you are having- I wouldn't want it to get much worse or you could really get into trouble. Stay on top of it with your doctor! Good Luck and I hope you feel better real soon.
1916673 tn?1420233270 Hi. I am still looking into calcitriol therapy and have not yet had any feedback from the original author, Dr Polzin, despite trying to locate him and sending various emails a few times. I don't really want to push this as a viable course of action without first researching it properly, but you can read a little more about it here: http://veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/11-guidelines-conservatively-treating-chronic-kidney-disease?
4294592 tn?1354141595 Anyone out there with this disorder able to give me insight? I have hypoparathyroid due to removal of my thyroid gland. I take 50mcg's of calitriol a day, and only 1 oscal calcium. My calcium lab done says my level is 8.3 ( 8.5- 10). I don't feel any symptoms though. My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure?
Avatar n tn The Epikacin, which is currently made and marketed by the same company that markets the Azodyl is an outdated drug formerly given to help bind and remove excess phosphorus levels on dogs with kidney disease. Because Epikacin is calcium based, and excess calcium levels are another very detrimental side effect that dogs often experience secondarily to primary kidney disorders.
Avatar f tn my endocrinologist is on vaca and she managed to message me once saying she would stay on lower dose of calcitriol and change tums to a tablet of 1000 calcium 4 times a day and if i wanted to add magnesium and potassium...
Avatar f tn My levels dropped again. They increased my calcium dosage to 3 pills of cal vit d 4 times a day and citricol 2 times a day. Will I ever be normal or regulated again? I want more children and I just feel with surgery I screwed myself.
Avatar m tn I had a TT on 8/4/08 and my levels just came back around recently. I started out on massive amounts of calcium & calcitriol (cit. d) and am now down to 1500mg of calcium & 1 calcitriol .5 a day. I'm still having weekly blood work to make sure that my levels stay up where they belong, but my endo is pretty sure that my parathyroids have finally kicked back in.
Avatar m tn Vitamin D blocks the growth of cancer tumors. The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, does most of the work. Calcitriol is made in the liver and in various organs affected by cancer. This form of vitamin D offers several benefits: * Activates vitamin D receptors, which turn genes on and off * Prevents cancer from starting (Calcitriol encourages cells to either adapt to their new organ or commit apoptosis [cell suicide].
Avatar m tn I am taking 800-1000mg daily of Citracal, and Calcitriol .25 twice a day. They checked my PTH level and it was undetectable. I also had low phosphorus levels. I am worried about it happening again since I don't know why it happened. The only symptom I really had was menstrual-type cramping.
Avatar n tn m going to try take both magnesium and vitamin D and see if that would help. My blood test say my calcium and magnesium are fine, but something has to be wrong. The tingling is similar to what I experienced right after my TT and calcium helped with that, but it hasn't helped this time. So I'll try those two supplements. Thanks for your help.
4294592 tn?1354141595 I received a call from my doctor saying my vitamin d levels are low. She did not give me the range. I have hypoparathyroidism due to surgery i take 50mcg's of calcitriol a day to mantain calcium level. She wants me to add another 25mcg's of calcitriol because my vitamin d is low. Does that sound right? Because i would think that the test she did would have to be specific looking at the active and inactive forms of vitamin d. I dont know what to do but i dont think she is right..
139126 tn?1255036991 Had a TT 5+ weeks ago. Was told my parathyroids were not touched and my calcium levels have been really good. Dr had me take .25 mg of calcitriol daily for 4 weeks; just weaned down to .25mg every other day. Taking 2000 mg of calcium a day plus whatever I get in my diet. My most recent serum calcium test came in at .88 which my Dr says is below normal and he's concerned. Is it usual for your parathyroids to stop working so long after surgery?
Avatar f tn I am having to take calcitroil .5 BID and calcium because my parathyroid have not restarted after a TT in March '09. My question is do I need to be having any kind of kidney function labs now or in the future? If so which ones? Is there anything I can do to make my paras start up again? I have two left. Thanks!
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
Avatar f tn I am now on calcitriol and 4 600 mgs of calcium three times a day. I feel better, and hope it continues...the tums were not cutting the mustard for me, and from what I have been reading the calcitriol stimulates the parathyroids to pump calcium into the blood, which is what I needed. I hope it keeps up. I get my blood taken again tomorrow, so I hope my calcium levels went higher than they were on Monday, which was 6.
Avatar n tn This can be due to low calcium - call your doctor to determine the right dose of calcium replacement and vit D (sometimes prescription vit D such as calcitriol is needed). It may resolve with time, but close followup is needed.
