665125 tn?1273023924 We keep the calcium level slightly low to minimize kidney damage from excess calcitriol and calcium intake.
Avatar n tn Epikacin, is an old Calcium based product, formerly used to bind excess phosphorus and help eliminate it from the body, in pets with kidney failure. Unfortunately, excess calcium blood levels are usually also present in pets with kidney failure and because of this, newer products specifically Aluminum Hydroxide is considered to be the best product available to reduce excess phosphorus and calcium blood levels.
4294592 tn?1354141595 Anyone out there with this disorder able to give me insight? I have hypoparathyroid due to removal of my thyroid gland. I take 50mcg's of calitriol a day, and only 1 oscal calcium. My calcium lab done says my level is 8.3 ( 8.5- 10). I don't feel any symptoms though. My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure?
Avatar m tn Ever since she has this terrible feeling of electricity going through her body. She was told it is in connection with calcium intake levels. It is taking what appears to be an inordinate amount of time to balance whatever it is that is creating this presentation. Referrals to specialists to fix it are far off when a person is in such great discomfort. Is there anything that can be done in the meanwhile? Why does this happen? Is it common?
Avatar m tn Can anyone share with me what kind of vitamin therapy I can implement for loved one with rectal cancer? Has already had colostomy surgery. Not started any chemo/rad therapy as of now. I am trying to get him s strength built up before all the treatments start. He is on some pain meds that seem to give constipation. Also what kind of foods should he eat? He is open to anything that will not interact with Hydocodone and morphine.
Avatar f tn It really depends. . .I had my total thyroidectomy on 8/4 and had a calcium crash a few days later. After being in the hospital for a week on an IV calcium drip, I was released on massive amounts of calcitriol (Prescription vit. ) & calcium. I am now down to manageable levels of calcium (3 a day) and my doctor wants me off of the calcitriol. . .
Avatar n tn Sorry it took me so long to respond. I didn't recieve a notication email so I didn't know someone else had responded. I'm going to try take both magnesium and vitamin D and see if that would help. My blood test say my calcium and magnesium are fine, but something has to be wrong. The tingling is similar to what I experienced right after my TT and calcium helped with that, but it hasn't helped this time. So I'll try those two supplements. Thanks for your help.
4294592 tn?1354141595 I received a call from my doctor saying my vitamin d levels are low. She did not give me the range. I have hypoparathyroidism due to surgery i take 50mcg's of calcitriol a day to mantain calcium level. She wants me to add another 25mcg's of calcitriol because my vitamin d is low. Does that sound right? Because i would think that the test she did would have to be specific looking at the active and inactive forms of vitamin d. I dont know what to do but i dont think she is right..
139126 tn?1255036991 My dr mentioned that even though, they are still there and had nothing wrong with them...they may get a bit irritated by the surgery and just sort of "be ticked off" so it may not hurt to take the extra calcium...when you take calcium, make sure you take vitamin d as well. It makes the calcium work better.
Avatar n tn The Epikacin, which is currently made and marketed by the same company that markets the Azodyl is an outdated drug formerly given to help bind and remove excess phosphorus levels on dogs with kidney disease. Because Epikacin is calcium based, and excess calcium levels are another very detrimental side effect that dogs often experience secondarily to primary kidney disorders.
Avatar f tn I am having to take calcitroil .5 BID and calcium because my parathyroid have not restarted after a TT in March '09. My question is do I need to be having any kind of kidney function labs now or in the future? If so which ones? Is there anything I can do to make my paras start up again? I have two left. Thanks!
Avatar f tn I spent five days in the hospital, thanks to issues with my calcium levels. I could not get above 7.5. I was sent home with instructions to take calcium supplements, but still I have tingling and burning and muscle cramps. It is agony, especially at night. My surgery took three hours, and the only pain I had was the sore throat. Not sure if that was from the anesthesia or the surgery, but it lasted about four days. The incision isn't that painful, and I am still pulling off steri strips.
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
Avatar n tn This can be due to low calcium - call your doctor to determine the right dose of calcium replacement and vit D (sometimes prescription vit D such as calcitriol is needed). It may resolve with time, but close followup is needed.
Avatar f tn Usually calcium makes people constipated. It might just be from the anethetic you had for your op. It takes up to a week to get it all out of the system. Often loose motions are a sign of that happening. I meant to ask you in your previous post, are you making sure you take the calcium at least 4 hours after your thyroid medication? Both interact and you don't want that!
Avatar f tn There is a small chance of long-term low calcium that may require calcitriol but future pregnancy should be fine even in that case.
Avatar m tn I was recently admitted to the hospital with a calcium level of 16.5! I had taken under 1000mg of calcium that day because I have parathyroid damage due to my Thyroidectomy. I have been hypocalcemia for three years. They still do not know why it happened. I am taking 800-1000mg daily of Citracal, and Calcitriol .25 twice a day. They checked my PTH level and it was undetectable. I also had low phosphorus levels. I am worried about it happening again since I don't know why it happened.
Avatar f tn I am taking calcium supplements and vitamin d, but just learned that I need to be taking activated vitamin d, (Calcitriol). The problem is that Calcitriol gives me horrible stomach pains. Does anyone know of any other activated vitamin d I could use? More importantly, has anyone out there had their parathyroid function resume/completely recover after months of low parathyroid function? It's been over 5 months since my surgery, and they still haven't kicked in.
Avatar f tn my endocrinologist is on vaca and she managed to message me once saying she would stay on lower dose of calcitriol and change tums to a tablet of 1000 calcium 4 times a day and if i wanted to add magnesium and potassium...
Avatar f tn 2 days later, however I went back to ER with calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) my hands and mouth felt like I was getting paralized. With calcium supplementation and 2 tablets of calcitriol, it seems that the tingling sensation is under control. 3 nights ago, I developed a cough at night that have kept me from sleeping! Can anyone help me? I have a lot of phlegm and post nasal drip. And there's a part of my throat that tickles.
