My doc LOVES Bystolic. Both are Selective Betablockers and they say Bystolic has little or no side effect. I would give it a try. I have not used either but have heard very good things about it.
I tried every medication they gave me metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, etc. until they finally hit on a new medication by Bystolic! I hit the jackpot, it was like night and day! I take 20 mg in the morning with 125 mg of magnesium taurate then 5mg of Norvasc for HTN then take 10 mg of by Bystolic at night with 125 mg of magnesium taurate in between I take .5 Xanax in the morning and at night I have not had one PVC in the last three years I feel like a different human being!
Metoprolol caused me hair loss....Bystolic has slowed it down somewhat....
I was placed on Bystolic and started having chest pains about a week later. Cardiologist stopped Bystolic and placed me on Metoprolol ER and performed an echo, ekg, stress test and myocardial perfusion imaging study. MPI study showed an anterior wall perfusion defect and he felt it was due to breast tissue as ekg, echo and other views on MPI were normal. Chest pains went away for about a week and now are back. I am concerned that maybe he was wrong.
I've been on bystolic for about a month and a half. I've had some dizziness and a little fatigue. No problems sleeping or anything like that, though. I was previously on metoprolol and had awful nightmares, way worse dizziness and light headedness, heavy leg sensations, etc. Bystolic has been way better for me. Best of luck to you!
25 mg extended release, which is obviously not enough, though I feel great in terms of strength and alertness and stamina, that were all seriously diminished when I was taking Propranolol. So, now I am wondering: I definitely need to go up at least to 50 mg, but should I do a 50 mg Metoprolol once a day, or can I take the 25 mg tablets twice a day (every 12 hours).
It sounds like you had less problems with Metoprolol, maybe you should go back to it. My experience with Metoprolol is that I have adjusted to it over a period of months. I think it still causes some fatigue or more correctly makes it harder for me to engage in heavy physical work/exercise.
Have taken Atenolol and Metoprolol SUCC ER. Atenolol did nothing for me, Metoprolol would help for a few days and then would have to increase dose. When I got to 125mg of Metoprolol, I had trouble breathing. Was switched to Bystolic, started at 5mg, then 10mg. At 10mg I could no longer feel the PACs or PVCs, but again was unable to breath. Turns out I am alergic to Beta-Blockers, but the Bystolic may help you with your symptoms.
s pounding, and is a side effect of the beta blockers. i started off on metoprolol, but am now on bystolic, which has a lot less nasty side effects for me.
I was tried on various beta blockers to start with, but there was only one which didn't give any side effects. I believe it is probably because of the low dosage needed compared to others. I found Bisoprolol was the best one and it only took 1.25mg to have the desired effects. If I increased to just 5mg my heart rate became too slow, around 28bpm. At 1.25mg I could get my heart rate quite high, but it got there nice and gently. No sudden adrenaline surges caused it to suddenly jump high.
I know this is 2014, five years after this post, but I have been on Bystolic for several years as on Metoprolol before which caused fatigue....I do not have the fatigue on Bystolic, but after taking for this many years have started having the weak, heavy leg thing, painful knees, had 15 lb. weight gain, and i only eat 2 healthy meals/day....now my B/P has skyrocketed with no changes in daily living....Dr. added Micartis.....
dry mouth, shortness of breath. They did lower my pressure though. Along with these, I took HCTZ 12.5 mg which also have me those same sided effects. Doctor took me off ALL BP meds and my nose bled uncontrollably and I wound up in the hospital and was given clonidine as my pressure reached 100/97. Now I'm on 100 mg of losartan, no HCTZ, only a cough but....my pressure is not controlled and goes up as the day progresses.
He also said the pulse in my right wrist was low. He changed my meds to Bystolic 10 mg (one a day) but the next day and for the next week, I was having a moderately severe pain in my spine, right behind my heart, but not radiating. So, he switched me back to the Metroprolol. Now the head pressure is back. What other drugs or type of drugs would be good to try. Should I ask to be seen by the cardiologist? We have HMO insurance so I would need a referal.
im am a 31 year old male. I'm not over weight and in pretty good shape, active everyday. about 1 1/2 years ago i got really stressed out that my heat started running around 125 bpm non stop. i didn't have any symptoms just became worried about it. my doctor notice it during a check up for an allergy infection and sent me to a heart doctor. the heart doctor did pretty much every test you could think of and said everything looked good other than my heart skip and was beating pretty fast.
I had a bad experience with metoprolol. (even at just 12.5 mg). It made me dizzy and lethargic and then at night I had a vivid night terror.
Could anyone recommend another one that is working for them? I have prehypertension as well so the BB would be killing two birds with one stone (BP and HR).

Been on Atenolol (for 15 years) then switched to Metoprolol when the Aten quit stopping the palpitations. Well..I havent felt "right" for a while now. Tired, always feel like I have a SLIGHT case of vertigo..not really dizzy..but...off.... I kept up with my workouts and every other crazy thing in my life. Went to the cardiac workout place on Wed of last week to workout, and I was telling the tecnician about how I had been feeling.
of BB, but I can say Toprol (Metoprolol), which is taken at a much higher does, usually 50 mg or higher, can produce the side effects you describe. Some of us adjust to them over time. I take Metoprolol at a 100 mg per day level, and may go higher. In the beginning it cause a too low BP and caused some dizziness when I stood up too quickly (or just didn't take time to stand up). These side effects have passed, my BP in now near normal.
