1138687 tn?1548643978 Doxy is the usual approach when it's a very recent bite, as yours seems to be. Biaxin is the same as clarithromycin, Dr Burrascano's 'treatment guidelines' posted on the ILADS website say: "First-line drug therapies for Lyme disease may include (in alphabetical order): oral amoxicillin, azithromycin, cefuroxime, clarithromycin [=Biaxin], doxycycline, and tetracycline. These antibiotics have similar favorable results in comparative trials of early Lyme disease.
723952 tn?1231857532 I am knew to this Lyme Disease, but I do know the Fibro Center I was going to treats Lyme with 3 different abx at one time. This approach alarmed me as well. If you can handle it, go for it. I can't even handle 300 mg of Doxy right now!
Avatar f tn I was on Biaxin alone for 3mos and felt semi normal which for me is great. LLMD added Doxy and it has made all my symptoms come back worse than before. I want to quit the doxy but im told to just ride it out. I am wondering what exactly Doxy helps with? I kno biaxin helps with Bartonella for example. But what does Doxy do exactly for someone with late stage chronic lyme?
1094370 tn?1317134825 Saw my LLMD in San Francisco on Friday and he said that my Erlichoisis is cleared but wants me to stay on my meds (Ketek & Cipro) for another 30 days. My testing for lyme is still coming up positive and there were more positive bands and stronger ones than my last test three months ago. He said that the meds I'm currently are on do not treat lyme. After this course of meds, I am switching to Amox & Biaxin to begin treating the lyme. My CD57 shot up from like 20 to 87 though!
1181178 tn?1320783461 ve been to close to 12 doctors, 3 rhuemys, 2 neurologists, 1 lyme disease specialist naturopath, 1 CDC lyme disease specialist, 1 GP lyme specialist, 1 oncologist and now a rhuemy/immunologist at OHSU. It started out I only had SED rate CRP elevated, then my RA factor, IgM lyme WB positive, IgG lyme WB neg, clean MRI, and now I have elevated light chain protiens, possible early lymphoma markers, really high WBC, high ANC, high metabolic protien, and high IgG in the immunoglobulin profile.
1464587 tn?1307491605 Hey -- good to hear from you, just wish you were feeling better. I'm not medically trained, so all this is guess work about what approach I would take if I were going through what you are -- From what I understand, there is usually not much difference in the body's reaction to generic vs brand name meds, such as Biaxin/clarithromycin, but there are some instances when it can occur because of tiny differences between the specific chemical structure of the two medications.
166496 tn?1236182312 Welcome -- sorry to hear you've joined the ever-growing ranks of Lyme patients, but glad you got a diagnosis! Others will chime in here, but my best advice is to find a Lyme specialist for a consultation. You can get a referral from contact [at] ilads [dot] org ILADS is the main voluntary physician's group for those who think progressive thoughts about Lyme.
Avatar f tn My question is do you think it is possible this is mycoplasma and not chronic lyme? And if so exactly what test should I ask my doctor for to test for mycoplasma? My IgM Lyme test through Igenex showed 30+, 39, 41 IND. Thank you for your time and expertise.
314892 tn?1264623903 It does sound like you have a good endo doc. I would think about any taking any type of steroid...this bacteria LOVES steroids, it's their food. Steroids are used with lyme only if need be, but typically lyme docs wean us off steroids. It seems as if you did in fact have a reaction to abx, a herxheimer. Lyme docs look for this reaction when we begin antibiotics. Read all you can and compare your symptoms with lyme sypmtoms. I'll bet you can check off a few.
Avatar f tn I never had any problems with anger or depression prior to getting Lyme disease, but that is who I am now. I fly off the handle over the stupidest things that seem like life or death to me at the time. There is that irrational thought. I am a 38 year old grown woman with a license to practice registered nursing and I drove my car down a walking path because I needed to get my daughter out of the rain.
4451049 tn?1387153437 Oddly enough, of all the MDs I saw when I had Lyme, the ophthalmologist was the doc (other than my Lyme doc) who took Lyme very very seriously. It seems that ophthalmologists as a group are very up to date about Lyme. I would definitely see an ophthalomogist for his/her views.
Avatar m tn I would suggest you to start the antibiotic course for lyme disease and see if it helps. Since antibiotics work very well in lyme disease especially if started early.
4939681 tn?1361299299 I started taking Biaxin 2 days ago for a horrible throat infection. Since then my muscles have been weak and crampy (especially my calves with restless leg syndrome as well). I also am having horrible stomach cramps and nausea and I get an overwhelming metallic taste in my mouth (almost like bile actually). And the insomnia last night was unbearable. I haven't had insomnia in over a year. Has anyone else experienced this with Biaxin?
Avatar f tn It was about an hour and 45 minutes from me. He was on my insurance plan but this is not typical. I took Biaxin for probably six months. I got better. I stopped it. I got worse after a few months. I am on doxy now but smaller doses. What state do you live in? Don't let them tell you it's in your head!
Avatar f tn Since I have gone back on Biaxin and Tindamax in the last week, I seem to hit a wall around 3pm and I can't keep my eyes open. I have taken an afternoon nap about 4 days out of 7. I am a terrible napper and rarely ever nap, even when I was at my sickest with Lyme. I guess it could be herxing from the meds, but I haven't had this in the past. I am wondering if these two drugs are particularly targeting cysts and spiros in my brain.
4939681 tn?1361299299 Thank you for that link. And a sarcastic thank you to the FDA for FINALLY putting that warning out! Since at LEAST 2001 people have had terrible and long-lasting and sometimes horrible side-effects from the use of those drugs. I don't know if people here remember the anthrax scares after 9-11 when several high officials were sent anthrax in envelopes. "Tuesday, September 18, 2001, one week after the September 11 attacks.
4939681 tn?1361299299 Plaquenil is often perceived as an anti-arthritis drug used to treat connective tissue disorders. What it does is make the body more alkaline. My doc explained that he prescribes it with Biaxin (Clarithromycin-an intracellular abx) because by making the body more alkaline, the Biaxin can more easily penetrate the body's cells, which makes it up to 40% more effective. There is the common belief that inflammation causes pain.
1067297 tn?1255030564 ve read about patient experiences, amoxicillin is a popular choice for treating Lyme, especially in younger patients. Doxycycline is also widely used in treating Lyme. I've taken neither of those two. Depending on if/what co-infections the patient has, other meds/combinations can be effective. I've been on several different antibiotics, including minocylcine, azithromycin, and factive.
4451049 tn?1387153437 //www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-1374-Mepron+Oral.aspx?drugid=1374&drugname=Mepron+Oral (There's a reason those package inserts are called Terror Sheets LOL. They list every possible thing that might happen for CYA reasons. But I'm sure you can read past that and understand. Oh, and the study done for Mepron used many advanced stage HIV patients.
Avatar f tn I was treated for 7 months with two different "protocols" One was Doxy and the other was Biaxin/Flagyl.
Avatar f tn -- Biaxin (clartihromycin) and Omnicef (cefdinir) for Lyme. However, I have seen references in various places online to Flagyl being used against babesia. If you search "babesiosis flagyl" you'll find what I did. Take care!
