Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.
Avatar n tn Hello there, I am 26 years old and I had a maxillofacial surgery almost exactly 3 years ago during which metal plates and screws were drilled into my jawbones and cheek areas. I checked online and my surgeon has retired since so I have no idea how to contact him. I have never had a headache in my life. Then, out of the nowhere, for the past 10 days I have had non stop burning, agonizing headaches, numbness and burning in my face and around the back of my neck.
567677 tn?1246767776 The last neuro I saw in Tennessee says not only do I not have MS but I do not have trigeminal neuralgia either. He says Atypical facial pain. I say what is the difference? And I have read that you can have both. He gave me 2 new meds to take which I have mentioned before and they are not helping. Can you have both TN and AFP? Is there really a difference in the 2? And isn't TN a better diagnosis of the 2? Why after 5 years is my diagnosis changing?
Avatar f tn Hello, In your case, I think that it can be trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is very painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.
Avatar n tn By ATN -- do you mean Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia? If so, there are 5 different types of surgery. There are also medications -- mostly anti-seizure medications normally used for epilepsy -- that are used to control the pain. Problem with the drugs is, they can cause other problems (kidney/liver) and regular blood tests are necessary. A facial pain specialist is the best doctor to seek out or a neurologist.
Avatar f tn It could be, but would be atypical and not very likely. The first branch of the trigeminal nerve innervates the forehead and surface of the eye. The second branch cover the upper teeth, the upper lip, part of the nose and part of the cheek. The third branch is the lower jaw, lower teeth and part of the tongue. There is a type of headache called a "Cluster headache" that is typically described as being "behind the eye.
1475492 tn?1332884167 An interesting aspect is that this form affects both men and women equally and can occur at any age, unlike typical trigeminal neuralgia, which is seen most commonly in women. Though TN and ATN most often present in the fifth decade, cases have been documented as early as infancy. http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn As far as I know, TN does always cause pain, though there are often periods without pain. There is also Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia, where there is a constant dull pain with occasional zaps and zings of truly electric pain. I think it's most common for TN to be one-sided, but it can occur on both sides. People with MS are more likely than the general population to have it on both sides; I forget the ratio.
405614 tn?1329144114 1142-1144 We performed conventional T2-weighted brain MRI examinations in six patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and trigeminal neuralgia. In all patients brainstem lesions in positions expected to involve trigeminal fibers, particularly the entry zone of sensory fibers, were demonstrated. Compression of the trigeminal nerve by ectatic vessels, a recognized cause of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, was not observed.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thank you for your question Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid. Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. Take care.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed in the ER with having what is likely atypical trigeminal neuralgia (TN2). My doctor referred me to a neurologist who does not accept my insurance. Majority of neurologists who accept my insurance are affiliated with Emory in Atlanta, but the scheduling assistant for the neurology practice claims no neurologist will see me just for having pain in my face even though I have a referral.
Avatar m tn I just had a nerve block procedure done for my trigeminal neuralgia pain in my face. My face was sore but after 3 days, the pain in my face became more painful and I felt more electrical current shooting onto my lower teeth area. Why does it seem like my facial pain just got worse after this procedure.
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with atypical trigeminal neuralgia , I have severe crushing pain top and bottom of my right jaw pain into the cheek and across to my nose, ear ache and some neck pain. All the pain is in the right side and stops exactly in the middle of my face. (I dont get a headache with it . the attacks have lasted up to 12 hours with no reprieve until i got some tablets from my doctor.
Avatar n tn I had to find out the cause for my sinusitis with steady eyes and jaw pains. It was long time to come to atypical trigeminal neuralgia. Now I have to find out how to threat this neuralgia? If you want I can send you drawings of the two branches! I have terrible pressure from the top of the head into eyes holes and thought always there is only sinusitis. Head MRI has shown that there is lesion on the pons of the head. It could be cause for my TN? I still don't know what it is.
Avatar n tn i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
Avatar n tn I have had symptons from trigeminal neuralgia for the past 5 years. Last April ina a 2 week period, every day the pain escalated. I lost 9 pounds. I am on carbomazapan, which stopped the lighteninglike pains from shooting down my face, but when I touch near my right eyebrow or put moisturizer and or makeup on and even brush my hair it is still painful. I am constantly pressing on my nose to try to relieve the pain.
1385138 tn?1279928966 I have photos and witnesses of the swelling and redness including doctors. All other doctors than the neurologist say I have atypical trigeminal neuralgia. My Epitol trial is soon to be completed and has helped enormously as long as I restrict all activities. I also get sharp pain above the temple that is brief but feels as if something drastic is about to happen like a stroke. The area below my earlobe is very sensitive with pain and nerves to throat.
Avatar m tn Very good points you wrote here..Great stuff...I think you've made some truly interesting points.Keep up the good work.
738075 tn?1330575844 I woke up with Trigeminal Neuralgia last Thursday morning. I knew that was what it was, because I had it once seven years ago. This time it's SO much worse! I told myself I'd "tough it out" for the weekend, even though I did put in a call to my neurologist. By Sunday, it was so bad, I was in tears! I told my DH "just take me out back and shoot me like an old horse!" I was kidding, but kinda serious, too!
