I am now on sleep medication, clonazepam, Lunesta, now but which is barely working, Atavan is better and I can sleep but sedatives cannot be taken forever and this PND doesn't seem to be going away.

I've had a very distressing problem that's been going on for about a year now. I have a constant feeling of phlegm in my throat, though I'm not able to cough anything up, and while I am always clearing my throat, it barely helps for more than a minute or so.
Yes I tried Astelin, with all the thick post nasal drainage and my eyes get watery, well after I use the Astelin at night, I wake up in the morning and my eyes are not watery but they almost look like the tear film thickened up over my eyes as well as making the post nasal drainage thicker. I think seriously that I have tried EVERY nasal spray that was ever invented. My doctor even had a pharmacy make up a special nose spray for me .
Phase one: Flonase nasal spray several weeks along with Albuterol
Phase Two: Added Flovent inhaler, along with course of Z Pack antibiotic (2 weeks)
Phase Three: Protonix 40MG once per day along with Allerx twice per day (3 weeks)
Phase Four: Added Astelin nasal spray and double Protonix dosage (10 days)
Testing:
Normal Chest XRAY
Normal CT Scan Sinus
Pending:
Barium Swallow
So, nothing is helping and the sensations are very troubling.

A quick trip to the doctor and I was told that I had some kind of nasty allergic reaction which clogged my sinuses, gave me a post nasal drip which in turn caused the sore throat and asthma to act up. She prescribed Astelin, a nasal spray antihistamine and described the allergic reaction as a sort of systemic thing and that the astelin should clear it all up. That was Wednesday. I've been using it as told since then and I've only really noticed a very very slight improvement.

All these symptoms are leading to the possibility of chronic post nasal drip. Post-nasal drip is mucus accumulation in the back of the nose and throat leading to, or giving the sensation of, mucus dripping downward from the back of the nose. Post-nasal drip can be caused by excessive or thick secretions, or impairment in the normal clearance of mucus from the nose and throat.
Has a CT scan of the sinuses been done? This could be due to the post nasal drip that occurs associated with sinusitis or associated allergies.
You should try some steam inhalation and saline nasal drops along with oral antihistamine medications and see if it helps with your symptoms. You could also take some oral pain releif medications.
Are you allergic to any specific substances?
It is in fact a good idea to consult an allergy specialist and get a clinical evaluation.
He just had some ear wax build up, but no allergy or post nasal drip.
ve been seeing an allergist because my allergies have really bothered me this year. He prescribed a medicine that is a nasal spray called Astelin. I hope I don't seem 'weird' asking his but have any of you been on one of these type of nasal sprays while having Hep C? If so, did you feel worse using the spray? I've been on it two days and it's making the area of my liver hurt and also in between my shoulder blades.
I have post nasal drip and also an upset stomach a lot of the time. When my stomach is sick, the only way to help it feel better is to eat. But then that doesn't last too long. Do you think my upset stomach is de to the dripping? What do you think is the best remedy for this?

I had post nasal drip for almost 3 weeks. My nose was not runny nor did I feel stuffed up, I now have a mild sore throat no more drip, but phlem and it's clear also the bumps on the back of my tongue appear to be raised on both sides but one side a little more than the other. Does this sound like a sinus infection?
Does anyone suffer from chronic post nasal drip? If so, what have you found that helps? I have had it for yrs. Yrs ago before my surgery my PCP did a ct scan to check bc i had chronic sinus infections. Everything came back normal. My NS said my surgery may help my sinus problems. It hasnt. Zyrtec, benedryl, OTC sinus meds - nothing helps or relieves it. I vomit a lot and think the PND is the cause of some of it. Terrible gag reflex too.
However, a couple of weeks ago, I have realised that I have been experiencing post nasal drip. I am not sure if it is caused by the dry mouth, or if the dry mouth is causing it. Regardless, if I don't swallow frequently, mucus builds up at the back of my throat. I cannot seem to spit it out, and I have to swallow it.
Also, if I talk for too long, or go without drinking water for too long, my tongue dries up.

He said my nose is swollen and they also did a throat swab which detected no bacterial infection. I am wondering if my post nasal drip is caused by just inflammation of the nose due to any other reasons. The only one i have been able to come up with is picking my nose too roughly? Also its been 8 days since the problem first started or the symptom appeared. I dont have a stuffy nose in the day no itchy eyes, and the drainage is not very bad. Im wondering how long before this will clear up.

I have battled the PND for years.I have to be really careful not to catch a cold because it can last months and months due to the wonderful enviroment my PND has provided.
I would agree that psuedoephidrine is great for drying up and alleviating cough but now available only on script.
The TCM equivalent is Ephedra.I have also had some success with clearing the sinuses with acupuncture.
It is also definitly worth stopping both dairy and gluten products in the diet .
I have had post-nasal drip/chronic sinusitis/chronic bronchitis for all my very long life. I used to get 2 or three coughs a year that lasted for weeks, sometimes ending in pleurisy. I went to doctors, and eventually had to diagnose my problem myself: my sinuses were dripping down my throat and becoming infected and causing the cough. Eventually I had a CTscan of my sinuses and the official diagnosis: Chronic sinusitis.
Hi, I went to the clinic few days ago and the doc said that I might have post nasal drip because I spit out mucus,stuffy nose,cough,sneeze,....He gave me a nasal spray and said that if it doesn't work come back for allergy testing.How long would it take for this medication to work ? and if this medication doesn't work how many weeks or months should I wait to see the doc ? I have had post nasal drip for about 2 months, doctor put me on fluticasone propionate which has helped as not as bad but noticing still having nausea in am especially with having a cup of coffee with creamer as like today I drank just a little next thing I am throwing it right back up. I am over 50 and just went to allergist who diagnosed me with asthma and all allergy tests showed I wasn't allergic but my question is is it the creamer making me sick or the actual coffee.
Hello, I only joined this forum in the hope I may get some tips on how to alleviate some of the problems I have with this complaint, I think I must have suffered with Post nasal drip for a couple of years. The very worst and most depressing symptom I have is the awful feeling of thick phlegm at the back of my throat some days it makes me gag.
Background:
I'm a 30yr old Indian born male living in London from past 6yrs.
I’m a 69kg fit person and I workout a lot (probably 5-6 times a week) with no medical conditions. (Although I’ve had a sinus operation about 15 years ago, not sure if that is relevant).
History:
Since last 1.5 years (from May/June-2010) I have had hacking cough and skin urticaria (dermatographism).
Following were some symptoms I had in July/Aug-2010:
